Thinking about adding a corgi to your family, but you have a cat? Or vice versa? Wondering about corgi and cat compatibility. Find out what you need to know.

So, you’re wondering about corgis and if they’re good with cats.

You’re probably thinking of adopting or buying a corgi.

But you’re not sure if Fido will get along with Oliver.

In this article, we’ll talk about:

Safety precautions of allowing a cat and your corgi to interact

Different ways to predict if your corgi will accept a cat, or if a cat will accept your corgi

How to gauge behaviors and what to look out for when socializing them

Signs of a corgi that’ll likely get along with cats (and cats that get along with corgis)

Socialization of your corgi to kittens

How to introduce a corgi to your cat

And other FAQs

By the end of this guide, you should be able to have a solid understanding of whether or not corgis are good with cats, how to get them accustomed to each other, and signs/behaviors to help you out during the socialization period.

And if you have any questions, post a comment below!

Sound good? Let’s get your corgi a new feline friend!

Safety first

Note that behavior between cats and corgis is unpredictable, even for established relationships between the two species.

You should always consult a professional animal behaviorist for advice BEFORE allowing them to interact with each other.

The material here solely is to be used for educational advice and is NOT intended to be a program or substitute any advice of any degree whatsoever for your pets.

Do NOT proceed without consulting a certified animal behavioralist.

Doing so could lead to serious harm, physical trauma, mental trauma, or other consequences to your pets that could be irreversible. You assume complete responsibility and full liability for your actions. Proceed at your own risk.

Corgis and cats can turn on each other in a split second, even if they’re friendly with each other for extended periods.

ALWAYS exercise caution using controlled environments and under 100% supervision with a capable and competent trainer.

Are corgis good with cats? – Corgi and cat compatibility

Corgis can be socialized early to be friendly with cats.

Corgis are known to be very protective dogs to their entire family.

They’re not generally one-owner dogs and will bond with all family members equally.

They’re bred for herding farm animals, which is why they make awesome exercise partners or guard dogs to protect the home. So they’ll often round up family members all into one room- it drives them crazy if you’re all separated.

Otherwise, how does this relate to cats?

Because if you adopt a corgi that’s already an adult, you may be bringing home a dog that’s highly aggressive or evasive towards cats.

You don’t know the history of how it was raised, and you don’t know if cats are a positive or negative stimuli to it. This can be a problem.

I already have a cat, but I’m planning to get a corgi

Bella may make her new best friend.

If you already have a cat and you’re thinking of adding a corgi to the family, the best way to do this is to adopt or buy a corgi when it’s young.

Early socialization to cats, people, sights, and sounds is critical for a well-behaved corgi.

This breed is known for its herding abilities and strong dominant traits to bark and nip at other animals (including humans) to get them moving.

After all, that’s what they’re bred for. Genes tell a story.

This is why adopting a corgi can be tricky if you already have a cat.

A corgi that never grew up around cats may have an aggressive or frightened reaction when you introduce them to each other.

While it’s not impossible to get the two accustomed, it can be difficult if the dog is older.

That’s why starting with a young puppy (8-12) weeks makes socialization easier to cats, but only if the process is done correctly.

The dog must have a positive experience with the cat or else things can go awry.

Even then, some corgis may never be able to be calm and relaxed around felines as they enjoy the thrill of herding and chasing other species.

And then you also have to consider the fact that cats may also be a wildcard.

Even if your corgi accepts the cat, the cat may not accept the corgi! There’s a lot of factors at play so there’s really no telling what’ll happen.

I have a corgi, but I’m planning to get a cat

Corgis may not welcome new cats, but there are always exceptions.

Corgis can be very territorial as they have a protective nature.

After all, they were used to protect entire acres of farmland and herd animals back in Wales.

Because of this, a new cat added to the family may be a threat to your corgi’s existing territory.

And this will cause aggressive behavior from your dog. This makes it difficult to gauge how your dog will respond to the new feline in the family.

And to make matters even more complex, if the cat is still a kitten, the cat may experience a negative reaction to the dog and this can lead to unpredictable behavior. If your corgi is older, territory and behavior patterns are already established.

This is a bad time to add a cat to the family, unless you know your dog has been socialized to cats. If not, they MUST be controlled when they first meet each other.

You already have a routine built with your dog and once the cat starts taking up your precious time together that was once all Fido’s, things can start getting ugly.

Excessive barking, whining, or abnormal behavior are all to be expected.

Do corgis and cats get along?

There is no absolute answer for this and it entirely depends on both the cat and corgi’s personalities. And there’s no way to tell if cats and corgis are compatible.

But the major deciding factor? Early socialization.

Getting a corgi as a puppy is the best time to introduce him to your cat.

When the dog is still young, they’re more accepting of everything.

You could even train your dog to let her be the dominant one in the household! This is the highest chance of success you can possibly get.

Early socialization matters

Your corgi has the best possible chance to become friends with your cat if socialized properly.

Adopt or buy the corgi as a puppy and always use positive, controlled associations when they interact with each other.

Remember that this critical, “magical” period only allows for the first 16 weeks (4 months) of your dog’s life.

After this window expires, it’s very difficult to get your dog accustomed to anything- especially a new household member that’s an entirely different species.

If this isn’t an option for you (maybe the corgi is older), it’s not impossible.

You can inquire about the history of the dog:

Has he previously been raised around cats or other animals?

Has socialization work been done already?

Does he have a submissive or docile personality?

If the answer is a resounding “no” to all, you can still try by setting up a controlled environment and using best practices to introduce your corgi to your cat.

Even if you adopt a corgi that’s on the older side, it can still be perfectly happy with a cat companion.

There are examples of this all over the ‘net:

Depending on the corgi’s personality, he may accept the cat and become best friends and do everything together, just like you see in the movies.

So don’t be discouraged if you plan on adopting an older corgi and you have a cat.

Or if you already have an adult corgi and you want to adopt a kitten. It goes both ways.

Rules, tips, and tricks

A corgi behaving poorly should be separated from the cat.

There are some tips that definitely help the process of getting the two species to get accustomed to each other.

Like any other habit-building methodology, it’s best to start early in your dog’s life as a puppy.

Even better, get a puppy and a kitten at the same time for the highest chance of success.

Here are some rules to drill into your corgi’s behavior:

The cat is off limits

You should never let your dog chase the cat.

Discourage this behavior by disciplining your corgi at an early age to lay down the foundation and set up good habits.

Don’t allow aggressive behavior

Any signs of aggression that the corgi exhibits should be controlled and assessed.

Find out what’s causing it. Is it something that the cat’s doing? Or is just the corgi’s natural behavior?

See if there’s a remedy to correct it. This can be tricky, so you may need the help of a licensed dog behavioral specialist.

Always use positive association

When the corgi and cat are allowed to play with each other, always make it positive.

Use treats, praise, and rewards for good behavior.

Try to match personalities

A calm, relaxed cat should be paired with a relaxed dog.

Don’t try to match polar opposites because this makes them unfit for each other.

Discourage negative behaviors

Separate them immediately when negative, unwanted behaviors are shown.

This goes for both of them. If your corgi gets too aggressive during playtime, separate them right away. This will teach the dog that “doing this bad behavior ends playtime.”

Corgis are smart dogs and will learn quickly, but you must separate them right when the behavior takes place. They learn by association and the window to show a cause and effect relationship between behavior and consequence only lasts a few seconds.

Know their personalities

You need to know both your cat and dog’s individual personalities.

One may be used to the other’s species from previous exposure, but the other could be seeing them for the first time.

This could lead to preventing unpredictable behaviors by obtaining this knowledge beforehand.

Check the dog’s focus

See where your corgi’s attention is being directed to.

Dogs that are only staring or dead set on watching the cat could be nothing but trouble for you and your cat.

Your dog could be waiting and timing his attack.

Don’t let your dog loose. Use a confined area or secure leash. He could pounce on the cat as soon as you unleash him.

Don’t be fooled by his temporary behavior while constrained on the leash.

After all, corgis are smart and can manipulate their owners, especially first-time corgi owners. The same can go for the cat. Aggressive cats that snarl, hiss, and swipe can be dangerous to your corgi.

See if there are changes in behavior

Check to see your cat’s diet changes.

Eating less could be a sign of stress or illness, which can be because of the dog. If she stops drinking, eating, constantly hides, or shows some other changes in behavior, this is a sign that your cat warrants a vet checkup.

The same goes for your corgi. If he suddenly has a change in diet, exercise, weight, or behavior, you’ll want to get him checked out by a professional, especially if the change lasts more than a few days.

When they first meet each other, changes in behavior is to be expected.

However, ongoing changes that don’t revert to “normal” levels could be a sign of sickness or stress.

Seek a professional animal behaviorist or veterinarian for help.

Watch for danger

Corgis that chase, pin, or lunge at cats already show very negative behaviors. You may never be able to get them to associate with each other.

Snarling, growling and barking are all signs that your corgi would prefer to be alone. The same goes for a cat that growls, scratches, or tries to flee constantly from your dog.

Don’t force things. If it doesn’t work out, then it doesn’t work out.

Mind the chasing

Dogs love to chase, especially corgis. If your corgi chases a cat that constantly runs away, this can be a repeated trigger for the dog to constantly chase the cat away.

You want to stop the behavior right away before he keeps doing it over and over. Cats can also exhibit chasing to dogs, so it’s not only the corgi’s fault.

Only allow interaction within controlled environments

This goes without saying. They should only be able to make contact, play, or otherwise see each other when the environment is controlled.

A “controlled” environment means:

You can easily step in and intervene to stop bad behavior

Both the dog and cat can easily escape

There’s always at least one person supervising their interaction (two if possible- one for each species)

This can be done through the use of crates, perches, x-pens, and more.

How to introduce a corgi to cats

Whatever the situation you have going on, you want to make sure that both your corgi and cat are in a controlled environment.

Even if you’re 100% sure that your dog is properly socialized and accepting of cats, you still don’t know how the cat will react to the dog.

And we’ve all seen plenty of cartoons to know that dogs and cats are polar opposites.

Use a confined environment

Start by using an x-pen for the dog and a perch or tall pen for the cat. They should be within a few inches of each other, but not close enough for them to contact each other (a paw’s length).

Be careful because the cat can scratch your corgi, and your corgi can nip your cat with its long muzzle.

Some people recommend that the cat have free reign with the dog confined to a crate or pen. If you’re sure that they can’t hurt each other, this is acceptable.

The American Humane Society for Pets suggests that the dog be taken to another room to allow the cat to check out the smell of the dog.

Assess their behaviors

See and gauge how they react. They’ll likely be extremely curious. One will assert dominance right away (probably the corgi) and scare the other.

This will go on for a few minutes and eventually they may calm down.

You’ll want to make them “bored” of each other before moving to the next step. This will take several exposures for set time intervals over the course of many days.

Be patient

You can reward them with treats during the process and try to associate it with good emotions.

Your cat should have an escape route so it doesn’t feel trapped. Use a high perch so it has a bird’s eye view, but not too tall where it can jump into the dog’s pen.

Wait for the corgi to get comfortable with the cat

After you’ve reached the point where they no longer express aggressive behavior, you can slowly allow them to touch each other at a paw’s distance.

If your dog or cat exhibits signs of aggression or fear, lower your expectations and go back a step. You must do this or else it can lead to injuries or trauma.

Slowly allow on-leash exploration and interaction between your corgi and cat

Eventually, assuming everything goes right, you should be able to leash your dog and let your cat approach it slowly.

This will be the first time they’re allowed to fully check each other out, but it should still be only under controlled conditions.

Always use a controlled environment

Make sure that the situations you put them in allowing them to escape from each other quickly on their own will.

Don’t force them to make contact with each other. This is a recipe for disaster.

The dog should be kept on a leash and allow the dog to become bored and starts to divert his attention elsewhere.

The cat should also be calm and doing the regular cat routine- such as eating and using the litter box.

Things to watch out for

Here are two critical periods to watch out for.

There are some things you should be especially cautious of when letting your corgi and cat be together.

During feedings

When your dog or cat eats, this can be pretty dangerous if either pet gets nosy of the other’s food or protective of their own.

Some dogs are very aggressive and will resource guard their food. They may bark, snarl, or bite anything that they deem as a threat to their food (even humans), like this corgi:

You should never feed your corgi and cat at the same time, and never in the same room. Don’t let them ever see each other eating.

During play

When your corgi plays with his favorite toy, you may have seen him growl or bark at you when you try to remove it from him.

Maybe something like this:

Never seen it? Congrats. You have socialized corgi that doesn’t resource guard- his toys, at least!

Regardless, if you let your cat in the same room during playtime, the cat may end up getting curious and checking out the dog’s toys. If your dog is aggressive or protective, he may end up injuring your cat. Remember, curiosity killed the cat.

This is why you need to make sure that the cat stays away when you play with your dog. Toys like ropes, tennis balls, bones, and Kong toys should all be kept away from the cat.

Or just keep the cat confined to another room.

The same goes for the cat. When you play with your cat, don’t let your dog interfere. Your corgi may even try to claim one of her toys as his own!

Wondering why your corgi keeps sneezing? Or reverse sneezing? Does it freak you out? Here's what you shou

So, your corgi keeps sneezing. And it’s freaking you out!

He sneezes when he eats.

He sneezes when he sniffs the carpet.

Sometimes he sneezes twice (or six) times in a row!

In this article, we’ll talk about:

Possible triggers making your corgi sneeze

Sneezing vs. reverse sneezing

How to stop the sneezing

When to see your vet about this problem

And more

Sound good? Let’s see if we can find out why he’s sneezing.

Why does my corgi sneeze?

There are many reasons why your corgi may sneeze.

Keep in mind that there’s a distinct difference between a sneeze and a reverse sneeze and that they’re two different things.

First, let’s talk about sneezing.

Sneezing in dogs is just as normal as sneezing in humans.

Dogs and humans sneeze for the same reasons.

Well, a lot of them are similar and due to the same triggers.

Know what’s “normal”

You should always start at the vet.

Get an exam and ask questions. Tell them everything you remember in detail.

Your vet will tell you what’s going on with your corgi. If your vet says that the sneezing’s nothing to worry about, then you can consider this to be “normal” behavior.

Then, continue to note the sneezing episodes and mark what’s normal.

When you notice something different, that’s when you’ll schedule another vet exam and see what’s wrong.

And repeat.

This helps you recognize the differences between “harmless sneezes” or “dangerous sneezes.”

Plus, your notes will help your vet determine the cause of the sneezing with more accuracy.

You’ll know when to take your dog to the vet because if it starts showing signs of abnormal sneezing, you know something’s up.

Reverse sneezing

Your corgi may reverse sneeze and catch you off guard.

This is best described as “choking” or “suffocating.”

Your dog will start making quick “gag” reflexes and it can be quite alarming to the untrained owner.

Here’s a video of reverse sneezing so you can get a clear video of how it looks like:

And here’s another one showing the “choking” motion on repeat:

Reverse sneezing is also known as paroxysmal respiration. It’s not a real sneeze, but rather a reflex in dogs.

It occurs when their soft palate and throat become disturbed and the dog forces the air to remove it.

It’s just like a sneeze where the purpose of it is to expel air to remove some kind of particle or reaction.

A reverse sneeze simply is where the corgi takes in air to do the same thing.

Although reverse sneezing can be alarming, it’s usually harmless and nothing to worry about.

Allergies can also cause reverse sneezing along with some kind of irritant. If your corgi’s mouth, throat, or palate has an annoyance, you can expect a sneeze!

Reverse sneezes only last a few seconds, but may occur in episodes of many sneezes in a row.

Your corgi will sit there like he’s choking and stand in place.

He’ll then stick his head out and you’ll notice that the corners of his lips will be retracted.

During a reverse sneeze, your corgi will have his mouth shut, in sitting position, and a long neck.

He’ll then start a session of deep and fast, spasmodic inhalations.

He may appear to be choking, vomiting, or even having a seizure.

A pattern of rhythmic gags will take place as he sneezes.

This will last a few minutes in the series.

Once your corgi’s sneeze session is over, he’ll continue his normal activities.

What causes sneezing?

Sneezing and reverse sneezing are both caused by many of the same triggers.

The majority of cases are because of some kind of pollutant caught in your corgi’s airways.

This then forces him to involuntarily clear it out by sneezing or reverse sneezing.

Allergies and environmental triggers

Similar to regular sneezing in dogs, your corgi may reverse sneeze due to a variety of triggers.

The most common reactions come from things like:

Dust

Perfumes

Household chemicals

Bugs

Mites

Spiders

Hair (or dander)

Food

Plant matter

Foxtail burrs

Flea bites

Viruses and bacteria

A piece of grass stuck in the noise

Your dog may also have post nasal drip or a nasal problem.

Brachy breeds and smaller dogs are both prone to reverse sneezing.

Note that foxtail burrs are considered dangerous for dogs as they can get stuck in their nose, eyes, and mouth.

This is NOT something to ignore.

You need to take your dog to an emergency vet if you suspect that your dog’s having a reaction to foxtail.

If he’s sticking his nose around the home, especially corgi puppies, he may pick up something you missed.

Dogs can’t use paws to clear their nose, so their only way to clear whatever is up their nose.

So they need to sneeze. Constantly. Until it’s cleared and removed.

Allergies can be controlled using vaccinations. If your dog has other accompanying symptoms like runny eyes, wet nose, or feet licking/chewing, this can be an allergy at play.

Human activity

Playing, feeding, or even petting your corgi can make him sneeze.

Human activity also may trigger reverse sneezing. If your corgi’s on a leash and you pull at the right time, you can make your corgi sneeze.

Or if you get your dog overly excited, he may be triggered also.

Sneezing has also been reported when they drink, exercise, or eat.

Your corgi may even sneeze to get your attention or when he’s happy.

After being fed a nice meal, the sneezing may also be a followup “thank you” to their owner.

He’ll eat, rub his nose on the carpet, lie on their back, and then get back up and SNEEZE.

You may also notice this during play sessions or physical exercises.

If the sneezes only happen during this time and you can repeat the trigger consistently, you probably have nothing to worry about.

But you should get your vet to check it out anyway just to be sure.

A play sneeze rarely is something to worry about. It’s a communication signal and dogs show this to their playmate just to get some energy out.

Unlike humans, sneezes are a communication tool by dogs.

Diseases

Disease and viruses like kennel cough may cause constant sneezing.

This is a dangerous disease that requires immediate vet attention.

Being unable to determine the source of the triggers warrants a visit to the vet who can determine the next steps to correct it.

Tracheal collapse

This is a serious condition that affects smaller breeds.

If your corgi starts making “honking” sounds or seems like he can’t breathe, take him to an emergency vet.

This is not something that can wait and requires professional attention.

You’ll have to recognize the difference between “regular” episodes of sneezing/reverse sneezing and when you notice something’s amiss.

That’s why it’s critical to know the “usual” episodes your dog has, as mentioned earlier.

How to stop reverse sneezing

Even though the sneezing sessions may seem disturbing, the act is usually safe and nothing to worry about.

Some dog owners have reported that you can help stop the sneezing by doing the following.

Depress the tongue

If the reverse sneezing doesn’t end, you may be able to press down on your corgi’s tongue to stop the sneezing. If the episode continues much longer than usual, pressing on the tongue may end the session.

This forces the mouth to open and move air through your dog’s system.

Do NOT attempt this if you don’t know what you’re doing.

Get your dog to the vet if the sneezing gets worse or doesn’t stop.

Take your dog to a non-polluted area

Some corgis may have allergic reactions to pollens, dust, smoke, or other triggers and stimuli in the air.

You can move your corgi to an area with clean air to stop and cut off the trigger, which may help stop the episode.

Depending on where you are, you’ll have to move your dog either inside the home or outside the home.

Find out what the dog is reacting to and get the dog out of the area.

Massage the throat

You may be able to gently clear the dog’s reflexes by rubbing the throat.

Use circular, rubbing motions to help dislodge the throat and mouth.

Force your dog to swallow

Covering the dog’s nose forces him to swallow.

This may help clear the irritant if it’s in the throat, tongue, or mouth. You should not attempt this if you don’t know what you’re doing.

Blowing in their face

You can try lightly blowing in your dog’s face.

This may help them swallow which will stop the reverse sneezing.

You should ALWAYS consult your vet when you’re in doubt or unsure about your dog’s well being.

Constant sneezing that’s nonstop can be a dangerous condition or allergic reaction that can suppress the dog’s normal breathing patterns.

When to see the vet

Anything that’s different from his regular episodes should be checked out by the vet.

If your corgi constantly has episodes of sneezing and you just can’t find out what’s triggering them, it’s time to bring Fido to the vet.

Any of these symptoms are worth a visit:

Unknown triggers that cause sneezing

Frequent reverse sneezing episodes

Sneezing that lasts longer than usual episodes

Honking sounds

Unable to breath

Failure to recover after an episode

Extreme fatigue

Failure to exercise

Blue or black gums

Other symptoms that occur along with the sneezing (bloated face, change in diet, weight loss, strange gagging or spams, etc.)

Your vet can determine the source of the trigger- whether it’s dust, pollen, or some other allergy.

The professional may also check out your corgi’s nose and conduct a rhinoscopy to see what’s going on.

This can help you eliminate or reduce the sneezing episodes in the future to let Fido sneeze less.

Your corgi may be put on allergy meds, get a shot, or antihistamines if there’s some allergy at play.

Wondering why your corgi shakes and shivers? Here are the possible reasons why and what you can do to help him.

So, you’re wondering why your corgi shakes and quivers.

Maybe even nonstop!

In this post, we’ll cover these topics:

The reason behind shaking

Why your corgi shakes

Possible triggers causing him to tremble

When to see a vet

And more

Sound good? Let’s examine your corgi.

What is wrong when your dog is shaking?

Perhaps not this kind of shaking.

There are a few reasons why your corgi may shake or tremble.

Some of the reasons aren’t that serious, but others qualify for a visit to the vet for an office visit.

Here are some common reasons why your corgi may be shaking.

Your corgi is cold

Being cold is one of the most common reasons why your dog may shake in his boots (well, dog booties).

Cold weather or sudden temperature drops may trigger your dog to start shaking to generate heat. This is called shivering. And I know you know that.

Shivering burns calories by doing micro exercises within the muscles.

This helps produce heat and makes your corgi warm up. If your corgi is in a cold area or it’s a cold day or night, he may shiver. This is normal if the cold temperatures are temporary.

But if your dog is ill or has a condition, you should consider keeping him warm by using clothing.

Or just wrapping him in a doggy blanket.

However, if you’re in a cold environment (other states, AC on, or just the frozen food aisle at the store), shivering is expected and should pose no danger to healthy dogs.

Some dogs have dual coats (like corgis) which let them handle cold temperatures easily.

But dogs with single coats will be much more difficult to keep warm and you should be careful.

He’s nervous or scared

Dogs that have been conditioned to a negative experience may start to shiver or tremble when they expect something negative to happen.

Things like going to the vet, getting a bath, or even vacuuming can make your dog start to tremble.

Loud noises like fireworks, pots and pans, and strangers may make your dog shiver in place.

Your dog may also start to shake when he’s exposed to new environments he’s not used to (airports, being around new people, being in someone else’s house, etc.)

Proper association may help make your corgi accustomed to new environments.

Remember that all types of stimuli may make him scared- sounds, sigts, scents, and touch.

This is expected and should be nothing surprising.

But if your dog starts panicking, consider giving him treats to make him calm down and associate the experience with a positive time.

But don’t appease to your dog- if you try to calm him down each time he’s scared, he’ll never learn. This may also build separation anxiety.

He has a fever

If your corgi has a fever, this is in response to bacterial problems or poisoning.

Fever can be a symptom of sickness or recent medications or vaccinations.

You may also find the high temperatures paired with vomiting, diarrhea, lethargy, hot ears and nose, or even sneezing/coughing/reverse sneezing. It’s important to get your dog checked out by the vet if you’re not expecting any of these symptoms.

Constant shaking could be a sign of high body temperatures, which signals that there are other problems.

Your dog should have a temperature of 39.2C (102.5F) at the high end. Anything higher may be a sign of illness in your corgi.

Your dog may be in pain

Your corgi may need a checkup.

If your dog is shaking, he may be suffering from pain.

Dogs are VERY good at hiding their pain, so don’t always expect your dog to cry or whine when he’s hurt. They’re good at sucking it up and moving on.

However, sometimes the pain is too much for them to bear and they may end up shaking. If you notice your corig’s rear legs are shaking, you may want to get him to the vet for an exam.

This could be a sign of a hip or joint problem.

Your corgi may be tired

This is especially true for corgi puppies. If your dog has been playing all day, he may start to tremble in place.

Puppies need multiple naps throughout the day. Their schedules are literally to eat, drink, potty, play, potty, sleep, repeat.

If your corgi hasn’t had the time to rest, he may start sitting around more often, shaking his legs, or start whining for no reason.

These are all signs that your corgi may be tired and needs to take a nap.

Bring him to his x-pen and let him sleep. You may find that he runs right into his dog bed.

He could have a disease

If your corgi trembles suddenly out of nowhere and it doesn’t stop after a day or two, there could be a disease that’s starting to surface.

Distemper

Trembling is a symptom of distemper.

You’ll want to pay attention to any other symptoms paired with the shaking and then schedule an appointment ASAP.

Tell your vet everything you’ve noticed, changes in weight, and changes in diet.

Distemper is caused by a canine virus that frequently happens to puppies and adolescent corgis that are still undergoing vaccination.

Tremors are a common symptom of distemper, along with eye or nose discharge, fever, coughing, or changes in diet.

This is a serious disease and your dog needs vet attention urgently.

Generalized tremor syndrome

Generalized tremor syndrome (GTS) is usually exhibited in dogs between 9 months and 24 months of age.

GTS can be treated with corticosteroids and commonly causes tremors due to steroid responses. It’s also called steroid responsive tremor syndrome or white shaker dog syndrome.

This is because it was first found in west highland terriers and maltese dogs.

But it can occur in corgis also.

He could be poisoned

Corgis shaking from food poisoning is common.

Dog poisoning may make your dog shiver and shake.

Depending on what he ate, this can make your corgi shake uncontrollably. If he ingested something that’s poisonous to corgis, then tremors may be a side effect of this.

Common foods like chocolate, xylitol, garlic, onions, tobacco, and avocado are toxic. He may also have eaten toxic chemicals like snail bait, rat poison, or roach tablets.

The symptoms will vary and often include depression, vomiting, diarrhea, drooling, confusion, seizures, weakness, and more.

You need to seek urgent care for your corgi or contact the Animal Poison Control Center.

Your corgi could be nauseous

A dizzy corgi may shake.

Nausea will cause your corgi to shake in place.

Similar to humans, dogs can become dizzy from motion sickness (car, plane, and boat rides). They can also get nauseous from eating the wrong foods or allergies.

Dog tremors may be a sign that he’s nauseous, especially when paired with listlessness, swallowing nonstop, drooling, yawning, omitting, throwing up, or disorientation, or hiding.

Get vet attention ASAP or call the animal poison control center.

He could be having a seizure

Corgis who have seizures due to epilepsy, which can affect dogs just like humans.

Flashing lights, repeated lights, strobe lights, and other sources of triggers can make your dog shake, collapse, twitch, faint, or drool.

He may also chew his tongue, chomp on nothing, or foam at the mouth.

They often will fall over and start trying to “run” or paddle on his side (like he’s having a dream).

Medications can often resolve seizures such as potassium bromide, keppra, or phenobarbital.

He just got a shower

If you bathe your dog, you’ll notice that he’ll start shaking during the bath and afterwards when you towel him up.

This could be because he’s scared, he hates baths, he’s cold, or he’s just drying off. This also applies when he’s wet from the rain, sprinklers, or any other sources of excess water.

When he gets wet, he’ll start shaking to stay warm and dry off. This will help him prevent hypothermia.

Simply shaking can dry up over 70% of water from their body!

Nervousness from the water can also make him tremble.

Being scared of water is normal for most dogs, and this can cause his legs to tremble.

There’s nothing to really do about this- it’s normal!

Your corgi’s excited

If your corgi’s expecting something positive to happen soon, he may start shaking uncontrollably.

He may even urinate a bit just to show how excited he really is.

This may happen before feeding, play time, training sessions, or even just seeing your face.

Your dog’s mirroring you

Some people say that dogs mirror their owners.

And this means that if you’re scared, nervous, shaking, or whatever else, your dog may pick up on this and do the same.

This is especially true for smarter dogs, and corgis are no exception.

Your dog’s stressed

Similar to becoming nervous, your dog may start shaking during periods of stress. Stress and anxiety usually go hand in hand.

So if your dog’s expecting a trip to the vet, fireworks, alarms, loud noises, or even just being put into his carrier, he may start shaking and trembling.

These stressors are stressful because your corgi has associated negative association with them.

You should repair the trauma by using treats, food, or just show your dog that only good things happen when the stimuli occurs.

Your dog may even start treling when he’s expecting to be punished for soiling the carpet, chewing the furniture, or eating your sandwich. Quivering should be no surprise.

Why do my corgis back legs shake?

The back leg shaking can be any combination of the above.

Your corgi may be tired, in need of a nap, scared, or excited. Look for other signals paired with the shaking to see if you can diagnose the reason behind it. If not, consult your vet.

Additionally, if your corgi has been workign his rear legs, they may be shaking due to strenous exercise (such as the “sit pretty” command).

It can also be a sign of aging or hip/join problems.

Again, check to see if the trembling comes with any other symptoms to determine if it’s worth an exam.

Depending on the stimuli and triggers that’s making him tremble, you’ll have to assess the situation and see. If it’s related to a disease, disorder, or persists, consult a vet.

Corgi puppy crying nonstop? Driving you nuts? Stop the corgi drama and find out why your corgi is crying. And what you can do to stop the whining.

So, your corgi puppy is crying and whining nonstop. And you need some methods to stop corgi crying.

(That actually work.)

Maybe he’s not even a puppy. Maybe he’s an adult that suddenly started crying by reverting to puppyhood.

Whatever the case, you want him to stop crying.

(Or should I say, NEED?)

You can’t bear the crying anymore.

You can’t sleep. (And you have work at 7AM the next day.)

You want to ignore it because everything you read online tells you to.

(Giving your dog attention is bad?)

But at the same time, your soft side gives in and you end up playing with your puppy at 3AM.

So what do you do?

(And will you ever sleep again?)

In this article, we’ll talk about:

A few reasons why your corgi puppy is crying

Different methods you can try at home to ease the whining

When to take him to the vet

And more

You should have a good idea of what to do when your corgi puppy cries next time and how to stop it.

Sound good? Let’s stop the crying tonight.

Why is my corgi crying?

There are a few common reasons why your puppy is whining like crazy. And how you can stop your corgi from crying.

Here we’ll cover a few of the different things that’ll make him whine and what you can do about it.

1. You just got your puppy!

Congrats! Welcome to puppyhood!

If you just brought your puppy home, it’s obvious that he’ll cry.

You can stop corgi crying by making the transition as positive as you can.

Bringing home a corgi puppy is a traumatic experience, so make sure you’re prepared to make it as easy as possible on the pup.

Do your research.

Double-check your supplies.

Have a game plan for the first year of ownership

Some puppies transition well and aren’t too bad. But most will cry nonstop. Maybe even through the night. Or on and off.

New corgi puppies don’t bode well.

Out of all the reasons why dogs cry, this is the most common amongst puppies across all breeds.

Some corgis will even start crying out of nowhere when they didn’t before. Others will whine all the time.

There’s no hard and fast rule. It depends on the specific puppy’s personality.

You should expect your corgi puppy to continue crying as he’s just left his littermates and original den.

He’s in a new environment he’s never seen before.

You heard that corgis are awesome so you bought one from a well-known breeder.

But now, you’re having second thoughts.

Your pup’s whining, peeing and defecating all over the place. Maybe even at the same time!

And he has no idea what happened to his parents and siblings.

Being in a new place with new people, sights, sounds, and scents is 100% disturbing to a young pup.

Therefore, you should do everything you can do to make the transition as smooth as possible.

Here are some tips to stop the crying:

Get an artificial puppy that has warmth or heartbeat sounds

Play classical or soothing music through your phone or computer

Sleep in the same room as your puppy

Sleep within the puppy’s view

Lend him your hand and hold him

Cuddle with the puppy on the couch or bed

Shower him with food and treats (to a lesser extent)

Provide a secure place he can hide (dog house, crate, etc.)

Provide water 24/7

You should expect the crying to last anywhere from 3 days to 14 days on average.

This depends on how well you do in the transition and how comfortable the puppy is.

The age of the puppy also matters. If you bring home an 8 week old corgi, it’ll have a lengher crying period compared to an adopted adult.

Be patient and take it one day at a time. They don’t call it the puppy blues for nothing.

Don’t worry about this too much. Your dog will outgrow the whining soo enough. Then you can graduate to the biting and nipping part of puppyhood.

2. Your corgi needs a nap

So you’re playing with your corgi and he’s doing fine. Then you hold him as you watch Netflix. No crying.

But then you walk away to cook dinner and he cuddles up at your feet. He starts crying. You try to feed him but he doesn’t bite.

You try to give him water and he doesn’t drink. He likely needs to sleep and take a nap.

Puppies take 3-6 naps a day and this is completely normal.

Any puppy’s routine is to eat, drink, play, nap, repeat. Your puppy needs to take a nap throughout the day.

Without this, he’ll get extremely tired and this can be bad for his health. Your puppy needs naps throughout the day.

Either hold him or put him back to his crate to let him nap. This should stop the crying right away.

One thing I noticed after working with puppies is that they don’t recognize that they can nap away from their pen or crate where they sleep.

After a few days, he may be comfortable in his pen where he sleeps.

But once you bring him to another room to play, he may tire out and have nowhere to nap.

After all, puppies are very hyper and difficult to calm.

Because he doesn’t have a safe place to sleep, he’ll get tired.

But doesn’t feel secure to nap. You may notice that he constantly goes into the corner or picks a favorite spot and then sits there.

Consider buying a dog bed and placing it there.

Over time, he’ll learn that he has different areas he can nap.

Once he feels comfortable enough, he’ll nap even away from his main sleeping area.

This should eliminate the napping problem when he recognizes that he has other areas to sleep aside from his crate.

3. Your puppy needs to relieve himself

Your corgi might whine because he needs to go potty.

Once the puppy gets used to his sleeping area, he may start to avoid soiling it.

This is true especially when he gets larger and larger. He’ll quickly learn to take up all the space and label it as a “sleeping” area.

Dogs avoid soiling their sleeping areas, so he’ll want to avoid this. If he cries in the middle of the night, that’s a good sign!

He’s getting housebroken and no longer soiling his crate or nearby it.

He’s getting used to going outside only (or his dedicated puppy pads). This is exactly what you want him to do- cry or whine to be taken outside!

This may also be the case if your puppy is indoors and needs to go outside.

Your puppy may start crying or whining when he needs to go, so you should take him out. You should also let your puppy get his bath routine setup while he’s still accepting during the socialization period.

4. Your puppy’s hungry

This is an obvious one. If your pup is hungry, he may cry for food.

Take your corgi to his food bowl and see if he wants to eat.

Some dogs are picky eaters and won’t eat all the time, so your dog may need to take a bite.

Other dogs will eat until they bulge outwards from the waist, so that’s why you always need to measure out the right amount when you start the day and feed on a schedule.

5. Your corgi’s cold

Don’t forget that the coat isn’t developed yet in young puppies.

If you live in a cold area or you have the AC on, your pup may be cold.

Puppies don’t have their full coat yet and may not be able to tolerate colder temperatures, especially if they’re single coated.

Corgis have dual coats, but corgi puppies are still sensitive to cold weather and ambient temperatures because it’s not fully fleshed out yet.

(Get ready for the fur storm!)

You may also notice him shiver or shake.

6. Your corgi wants to go somewhere

Corgis may cry when they wanna go somewhere, but can’t.

Sometimes when you pick up your puppy, he may squirm and wriggle around in your arms.

He could be seeing something he wants to check out but you’re just walking by.

This leads to him trying to squirm his way out of your arms while crying and whining at the same time. The same goes for play pens and other confined areas.

7. Your puppy wants to go to sleep

Even though you provided your corgi plenty of naps throughout the day, he may still be tired by nightfall and looking to go to sleep.

This is especially true if you tire out your dog by playing, training, or exercising him. Puppies have bursts of energy and then basically crash hard.

They need a lot of exercise as they’re a herding breed built to chase animals with their stubby frame.

They need their naps throughout the day. He may cry at nighttime because he wants to be taken to his crate to sleep.

His naps from earlier may have not been enough to recharge him, and he doesn’t feel safe sleeping outside his crate yet.

Take him to his crate and he just may run right into his den for the night.

8. Your corgi wants attention

Can you really resist those floppy ears?

Dogs will cry and whine for attention. He may have gotten his naps, food, water, and expanded his energy for the day.

But if you’re busy cooking, cleaning, relaxing, or doing whatever, he may be begging for your attention.

As puppies age, they’ll grow out of this. Unless they have separation anxiety or weren’t socialized properly.

You’ll have to spend time and allocate a portion of your day to your dog. They require a good chunk of your day to properly train, raise and socialize.

If you don’t, this could lead to unwanted behaviors down the line.

9. Your corgi wants to get to you

Corgi puppies need attention, but how much?

Do you have your corgi locked up somewhere?

Perhaps in a play pen or his crate?

This will make him cry, especially when he’s not used to it. Make the pen or crate a happy place.

Play with your puppy. Put his food in there. Make the place enjoyable and associate it with a place to relax and calm down.

Don’t just toss him in there and ignore him. Give him a treat for going there.

However, you need to balance the difference between giving him attention every time he cries or else he’ll learn quickly that crying and whining means that you’ll come to him.

This builds separation problems and you should avoid bad behaviors. Use positive reinforcement at all times.

When you should bring him to the vet

This is important if you have no idea why your dog won’t stop crying.

Even if it’s not an emergency, a visit to the vet will give you peace of mind and a quick consultation.

They know tips and tricks to calm down a pup and can explain why they do what they do.

If you’ve tried everything and your pup still doesn’t stop crying, he may be hurt or dealing with pain.

You should take him to the vet to see if there’s anything wrong with your dog.

Random crying that doesn’t seem to happen at any particular time could be a reason to get a vet exam just to be sure.

Any other reasons to suspect a visit to vet shouldn’t be ignored:

Change in appetite

Weight changes

Restlessness or extreme fatigue

Change in appearance

Behavioral change

Constant crying when all needs have been met

So, you’re wondering how to socialize your corgi.

Why you should socialize

The benefits of socialization

How to socialize your corgi

FAQs about socialization periods

How to socialization adult

And other common questions

You can leave a comment if you have any other questions.

Sound good? Let’s get your corgi socialized.

Why should you socialize?

Socializing your corgi is good practice.

Dogs that are well socialized become generally happier, healther, calm, and less temperamental than unsocialized or poorly socialised dogs.

A few examples?

Let’s say you never socialized your corgi to vacuum cleaners. The next time you vacuum, your corgi goes nuts. This leads to depression, aggression, barking, and other negative behaviors that you want to avoid.

He’s not to blame since he’s never seen a vacuum before when he was young. Or maybe just had a bad experience with one.

Now let’s say you introduced him to a vacuum when he was young, or maybe rewarded him with positive refinancing when exposed to the cleaner.

This results in a calm and collected corgi who just sits there patiently while you vacuum. No barking, chewing or howling. No aggression.

How to socialize a corgi

Socialize your corgi for a well-behaved dog.

The whole concept of socialization is a lot easier than it sounds.

It’s basically just constantly exposing your corgi to a wide variety of objects, sounds, scents, people, and other animals and rewarding your dog with positive reinforcement.

There’s nothing special about it. These can be used for corgis (both Pembrokes and Cardis) to any other breeds.

The point is to make your dog never afraid of anything and comfortable in human society- from touching its paws to grooming his bobtail.

Some benefits of socialization:

Your dog will be relaxed and calm at all times

He’ll respond to your commands even when flustered or in times of uncertainty

Your corgi will be happier and more easygoing

Your corgi won’t be shy or apprehensive to strangers, other dogs, or people

Reduce the chances of barking, howling, or biting at objects, people, or other dogs

Your dog will be overall more friendly in public

So, as for actually “how” to socialize your corgi, there’s no magic formula. That’s like asking “how to drive a car?” there are tons of ways to do so and no one single solution.

Typically, you’ll want to start by making a checklist of all the things you encounter in your daily routine.

This ensures that your corgi will get used to those things. Though, the things you expose your corgi to daily are the easiest because they’re already part of your routine.

So that means it’s pretty much guaranteed that your corgi puppy sees them at some point. It’s more of the stimuli that you forget to socialize that become apparent later on when he grows up.

These are the “once in a while” stimuli that can be easy to skip. So add those to another list.

I like to break down all the different stimuli by category:

People

Objects

Events

Sounds

Other creatures (animals, cats, chickens, etc.)

You can make your own lists by category if you want. It just makes keeping track of everything easier. Then you don’t have to worry if you’ve covered that specific stimulus yet with your corgi.

The next step would be to add items to each category. These are things that you want your corgi to become familiar with, so think of daily stimulus that you want your corgi to remain calm during.

These should be things that occur daily or frequently in your routine, but also be sure to add the stimulus that only occurs once in a while, such as the trash truck coming on every Tuesday or the relatives coming over every now and then.

These are to be included on the list as you don’t want your corgi to be afraid of them. And you only have a few weeks to get him socialized, so act quickly!

Here’s a sample checklist of things to socialize with your corgi puppy.

Sounds

This category covers all the various sounds in real life your dog would hear on a routine basis. The easiest way is to jump online and play videos of sound effects over and over on a low volume so you don’t scare your dog.

There are some videos that are made just for this purpose. You can also buy CDs and play them, but why spend money when you can just play them online for free?

Sirens

Thunderclaps

Rolling thunder

Music (hip hop, classical, rock, EDM, pop, acoustic, etc.)

Fireworks

Alarms

Doorbell ringing

Jackhammers

Other dogs’ barking

Kids crying, screaming, and yelling

Car horns

Objects

Cars

Vacuum cleaners

Pots and pans

Trash cans

Bikes

Buses

Motorcycles

Shopping carts

Shoes

Skateboards, scooters, rollerblades

Sidewalk signs

Sports equipment

Plastic bags

Pens

Lights

TVs, radios, and screens

Computers

Umbrellas

Chairs

Streetlights

Blankets

Towerls, clothes, and fabrics

Wires

Air purifiers, humidifiers, dehumidifier

Showers, sinks, and toilets

Surfaces

Carpet

Wood

Concrete

Grass

Stairs

Mud

Wet grass

Snow

Frost

Unstable surfaces

Metal surfaces

Cars, truck beds, etc.

Other animals

Other dogs

Cats

Small animals

Birds

Any other pets you own

People

Children

Adolescents

Adults

People with beards

Tall people

Short people

Toddlers and babies

People running

People with boots

People with helmets, hats, sunglasses, etc.

Elderly

Touching

Regular handling

Touching the paws

Examining the mouth and teeth

Clipping the nails

Pinching the skin

Poking the skin

Cradling

Holding the dog in the lap

Holding the dog upside down

Hugging the dog

Grabbing the tail

Touching the dog by another part of the body

Using a towel, saddle, hat, clothes, or shoes

Harnesses, collars, leasehse

Touching and pinching the nose

Checking and cleaning the ears

Tools

Nail clippers

Shavers

Scissors

Brushes

Pens

Flashlights

Grooming tools

Cotton swabs

Various hygiene sprays or cleaning agents

Shampoo

Hygiene wipes

Places

Beach

Restaurants

Malls, stores, shopping centers

Various buildings

Busy streets

Suburban areas

Rural areas

Dog events

Puppy classes

Vet clinics

Pet stores

Residential areas

As you can see, there are many different stimuli you need to get your corgi accustomed to. I’m pretty sure there were some on here that you would’ve never thought of! It’s easy to never think about the things we encounter on a daily basis.

There are many socialization checklists out there, but I haven’t come across a single one that has literally EVERYTHING.

You should use multiple lists and combine them into a master socialization list. That way, you can cover all your bases and not miss anything- or at least get the most you can.

Remember that your lifestyle varies and no list is perfect except the one you make tailored to your life.

Your dog will be exposed to different stimuli depending on where he lives and what he does, so you’ll have to make your own.

If you keep your corgi busy (it’s in their genetics), they’ll need a different set of cues compared to a sedentary corgi.

For example, if you work on a farm, that list could be completely different too. Or someone who lives in a high rise building in a metro city. See the difference?

How many times do I need to expose my corgi to socialization cues?

Corgi socialization checklists can help make your job easier.

Until he’s settled and relaxed. That means when your corgi doesn’t care or ignores the stimuli and remains settled, you can consider him “done” with that socialization cue.

But if your corgi gets excited, scared, or aggressive, then more work is needed. Lower your standards and start again.

Basically, downgrade your current exposure method.

For example, if you’re trying to get your dog used to other dogs but he gets fearful when they approach, drop your standards and try again. Have YOUR dog approach them.

Rather than letting your dog stand there on a leash and cover as other dogs walk by, walk your dog behind other dogs and have him sniff them out on his own.

Ensuring your dog gets used to things like bathing, examinations, and even taping the ears can make your life a lot easier in the future.

What’s the socialization period for corgis?

Socialization is one of the most important things that you NEED to do when the corgi is young.

You can’t teach an old dog new tricks never rang more clearly.

There’s a “magical” period of when a puppy is most receptive to the world around him. This is between weeks 8-16 for corgis on average.

Some corgis will still be able to be socialized beyond week 16 (4 months), but it gets harder and harder as the dog learns to form generalizations about the environment around him.

Can you still socialize a corgi after the socialization period?

Yes, it’s still possible. But it’s very difficult. Most generalizations are already ingrained in his mind. He’s already learned what he likes, what to avoid, and what’s a threat.

Trying to change and reshape his learned understanding of the world around him is hard. He may be shy, resentful, hesitant, or even aggressive when forced.

Corgis don’t “get used” to stuff. This is extremely hard to do after 16 weeks of age.

For example, many owners try to stuff their corgi into dog shoes or boots when they’re adults or adolescents.

The dog hates it and resents walking. He chews on it, pulls it off, or otherwise refuses to move.

Why?

Because he was never socialized properly when he was young. The right thing to do would be to get him used to the shoes/boots when he’s under 16 weeks.

Trying to do it after is hard.

And this is true for many different things like collars, leashes, harness, saddles, clothing, accessories, and even dog carrier backpacks and dog crates.

Can you socialize a corgi after the socialization period is over?

It’s possible, but it’s not easy.

The dog will be very shy or reluctant to try to get accustomed to new things. This can be people, objects, or other animals.

You’ll have to do a very slow and long-winded program to get him “used” to the new stimulus. He may never fully be comfortable with the stimulus anyway.

But you can try by making a plan outline to socialize your corgi even after the period is over:

Start by introducing him to the stimulus (person, object, sound, or animal) slowly.

Set up a contained environment where no one can get hurt. Make sure that you can easily stop or remove the stimulus if needed.

See how your corgi reacts. He’ll probably sniff the object or so.

Praise him for doing so and reward with positive reinforcement. If he reacts negatively, quickly remove or stop the stimulus. Lower expectations. Try less exposure time or a more distanced exposure.

Continue lowering your standards until your corgi is neutral and calm. Reward with positive praise.

Continue raising your standards slowly by bringing the stimulus closer, making it louder, or lengthening the exposure time.

Adjust your program as necessary. If he’s starting to show signs of aggression, shyness, or other uncomfortable behavior, lower your standards again. If he’s relaxed and calm, you can raise your standards.

Always rewarded for positive and calm behavior. Never punish. He’s already not used to the stimulus in the first place.

Repeat the process over the course of a few weeks until your corgi is used to the new stimulus and well sized.

Does your corgi make strange sounds? Find out what they mean and why.

So, your corgi is making some weird noises and sounds.

And you have no idea why.

In this article, we’ll talk about:

Why your corgi makes all those strange noises

What those noises mean

Why your corgi growls, talks back, or howls

The various sounds corgis can make

And more

Sound good? Let’s read the corgi sound dictionary.

Why does my corgi make weird noises?

Corgis are known to be extremely vocal dogs.

This means a variety of sounds may come out of your corgi than you’d probably guess:

Groans “Why do you all have to be in different rooms?”

Moans “Last time I went to Disneyland, I got 3 shots.”

Barks “Hi.”

Sniffs “Do I smell cheese?”

Sneezes “Bless me.”

Reverse sneezes “Bless you.”

Howls “Why do garbage trucks have to be outdoors?”

Yelps “Don’t do that!”

Sighs “You people suck.”

“Talking back” noises “Heh. Sure.”

“Wookie” noise “I am Chewbacca.”

Whines “But I don’t want to be alone.”

Talking “Why don’t you ever answer my questions correctly?”

Grunting “Can’t. Reach. Couch.”

Grumbling “One day I’ll herd all of you.”

The infamous “arooooo” “It ain’t over until the corgi aroos.”

Gargling “Hangry.”

Closed mouth bark “Say that to my ears and see what happens.”

Purring (yes, this is real)

What do you think of that list of corgi sounds? Does it match yours?

This could be because both Pembroke and Cardigan corgis were bred to be herding dogs that communicate with their owners.

Since dogs can’t speak, they use a variety of sounds they make to communicate with their owners.

Corgis have the reputation of being a yappy breed, so it shouldn’t be a surprise that these dogs make a lot of noise.

Everything from the list above can be heard depending on the personality of your dog. Some owners say that specific actions trigger the dog to make specific sounds.

For example, one owner said that when their corgi is taken to the vet and got its temperature checked, the corgi groaned like it was the “worst experience ever.”

Another owner said when they come back from work, the corgi gets super excited and noisy.

And another owner said that when stretching or getting a snack, their corgi will make the “roorooroo” sound.

      Aroo for scritches from corgi

Some people think that the sounds corgis make are absolutely adorable. While others think they’re just plain weird.

How do I know if my corgi is happy?

You’ll come to learn with time.

Corgi owners want their corgi to be the happiest they can be. So it’s only obvious that you care to make your corgi happy.

The trick is to know the various things that make your corgi content.

Depending on the personality of the dog, some will be super excited with wagging (blob) tails, jumping, barking, and possibly even playful nipping.

Other corgis may be relaxed, slow blinking, and slow tail wagging with licking.

Signs of a happy corgi

There are so many different corgi personalities just like humans, so it’s hard to say for sure.

The easiest way to find out:

Does your corgi give you all of its attention?

Does your corgi follow you around, anxious to see what you’re doing next?

Does your corgi look you in the eyes?

Does your corgi attempt to bring you toys, nudge you for walks, or expect to follow a schedule?

If your corgi is focused on you and not preoccupied with something else, this is a good sign that your corgi is happy and content.

Signs of an unhappy corgi

If it’s unhappy, you’ll notice the negative behaviors and your dog will be constantly preoccupied with something else.

This is because he’ll attempt to “fix” whatever it is that’s missing or void in his life. But if he’s happy, he’ll be focused on you more than his own ulterior motives.

Here are some signs your corgi is unhappy:

Constantly pacing back and forth

Seeming like he’s distracted

Not responding to commands or cues

Loss of interest in previous things he used to enjoy

Aloof to interactions

Excess shedding, sleeping, or barking

Other abnormal behavior

Depending on how the dog was socialized, raised, current diet, weight, and even the time of the year can all have an effect on the dog’s mood. It’s important to take your dog to the vet if you notice any symptoms.

Note that because personalities vary, there’s no surefire way to answer this. That’s impossible.

That’s like saying “how do you know if a human is happy?”

Some people express happiness by jumping for joy while others are calm and break down to tears. There are different ways to show happiness in humans, so the same can be exciting for corgis.

But one thing you can probably count on is the strange noises they make.

Do corgis talk a lot?

My dog makes weird noises from corgi

Yes, they do.

As you probably know, corgis are vocal dogs and aren’t afraid to express their emotions and mood through a variety of barks, huffs, puffs, moans, groans, whines, and howls.

These dogs will make noises that almost give them human-like emotions when you think about it.

After all, they’re a very smart breed that can definitely recognize and read human emotions, as with most other breeds.

That’s why some bad corgi behavior can be corrected with just an evil eye!

Corgis are talkative and social creatures, so you might as well talk to them and incorporate the vocality. They like to talk to each other and their owners, as corgis rarely are to be left home alone.

These dogs will go crazy and develop negative destructive behavior if left alone and poorly exercised. Keep them tired.

Keep them mentally stimulated. And you’ll have a happy corgi.

Corgis talk. The hard part is finding out what they’re saying. Some owners say that they babysit dogs and whenever it’s a corgi, it talks. A lot.

Your corgi may grumble as it looks for the best lap in the house to sit on.

Or your corgi may be yappy until his favorite toy is given (the one you gave the first time around).

Or maybe even your corgi will start laughing when you tickle him under the chin.

Corgis have a lot to say and sometimes will even talk back to their owners with closed mouth barks. It seems like many corgi owners enjoy the fact that corgis are such noisy dogs and vocal because it makes them different.

Why does my corgi growl at me?

Aggressive corgi? Something’s not right.

So many reasons. Is your corgi genuinely upset with you?

Or is it more of a playful growl? Or are you mistaking the growl for a grunt or grumble?

Since these dogs like to talk and talk back to their owners, there are many different reasons why your corgi may be growling.

The easiest way to find out is to find out what exactly is making him growl in the first place.

Did you poke him while he’s eating?

Does he have socialization problems and guards his food or toys?

Did you start messing with his crate, bed, or sleeping quarters?

Or was he an adopted corgi that had a poor or traumatic experience in the past?

You’ll need to find out if his growls are serious, and where they’re coming from. What triggers him?

Does he show other signs of aggression at the same time he grows? This is key to finding out.

Do corgis talk back?

Yes, owners have reported that their corgi will “talk back” at them when they don’t want to obey or are hesitant to follow a command.

This usually is done by the corgi with the mouth completely shut and letting out a small bark inside. The bark is audible and easily heard, but sounds more like a muffled woof.

Your corgi may “talk back” in quick succession in one or two closed mouth barks.

While most corgis will continue to follow and obey the command, they’re not doing it for free.

Be sure to reward them with a treat or else next time he may outright refuse or break the conditioning.

Does your corgi refuse to have its paw pads touched? Here's why and what you can do to help "fix" the problem.

So, your corgi hates having its paws touched and probably bites or growls when you try to do so.

Don’t worry. This is common among all dog breeds.

You’ll learn:

Why dogs don’t like you touching their paws

What to do about a corgi who growls, bites, or flinches

How to get your dog used to paw touching

And more!

You should have all the basics down by the end of this page.

Sound good? Let’s explore this strange behavior.

Last updated: 3/7/20.

Why does my corgi hate when I touch his paws?

This is a very common behavior with dogs in general and is NOT limited to just corgis.

So don’t only assume this is a drawback limited to just corgis.

The easiest explanation would be because of socialization (or lack thereof).

During the period of 8-16 weeks, the corgi puppy learns to “accept” certain behaviors as well as sights, sounds, scents, etc.

If the puppy had its paws constantly touched (like multiple times on a daily basis), it wouldn’t have a problem with it as an adult.

Socialization

Paw touching is just like any other behavior during socialization. If not practiced, the corgi will learn to refuse and hate it.

Your corgi may end up growling, flinching, or even biting when you touch its paws.

This is due to either never being exposed to it during those critical socialization weeks, or some kind of trauma or phobia that messed up the corgi’s mentality.

Because the paw touching is foreign to the dog, it’ll react negatively. There’s no exact reason other than trauma or no socialization.

Some breeders will tell you to touch each paw periodically and play with each toe. This will help get the corgi used to getting its pawed touched.

Why does my dog growl when I touch her paws?

A corgi will hate paw touches by default.

Your corgi isn’t used to the sensation of having the paws touched because it likely never was accustomed to it during socialization between weeks 8-16.

There could also be some other underlying trauma or phobia from previous owners if the dog was adopted, or something on the breeder’s end.

It’s difficult to pinpoint the exact reason behind the paw fussiness, and often, it’s very difficult to “fix.”

These behaviors are ingrained into your corgi’s behaviors from a young age.

The main reasons are socialization, previous trauma, or natural refusal.

Attempting to get your corgi “used” to paw touching is often futile and just stresses the dog.

Some other corgis may just not have the personality to bear having its paws touched even with plenty of socialization, training, and positive reinforcement.

Perhaps a nail clipping did her wrong and now she has a trauma.

Or maybe she had her paws stepped on by children as a puppy.

Or if she was an adopted corgi, there are many variables to her history that are unknown related to the feet.

There are countless reasons. Some corgis will be okay with it only to suddenly hate it. This has been reported by owners also.

By default, dogs dislike anyone messing with their feet.

So it’s “normal” behavior. If your corgi hates it, this is to be expected. Only one in a million will actually allow it by nature.

This is a common behavior with many dog breeds and not exclusive to corgis.

Your corgi may bite, flinch, or even growl when you touch its paws.

Some dogs are extremely sensitive over their paws and may never get used to it. It’s just something that’s widely dependent on how the puppy was raised.

Even with proper conditional training, some corgis will NEVER be calm. So this is just something you have to be wary of.

Can dogs have sensitive paws?

Yes, some dogs can have sensitive paws to the touch and will show this by reacting accordingly.

Some dogs can be very sensitive about their feet in the first place exactly because they have sensitive paws to begin with.

You should be extra careful when attempting to trim nails or use clippers while grooming. One slip up could lead to an accident.

Dog paws have many sensory and nerve endings to let the dog know about the environment and any genetic defect in the pads can lead to sensitivity,

The ends are usually well covered with leathery pads to prevent this, but this doesn’t always develop the same way for all breeds.

Some dogs may also change throughout the course of their lifetime.

Breeds that are heavier can end up with more worn pads over time. They’re used to do everything from sensory input, running, digging, walking, and more.

Thus, they’re very important to the survival of your corgi and by nature, he’ll be protective over them. Even a small nick in the pad will cause extreme pain for the dog.

This is why most dogs will rarely trust anyone touching the pads unless done at an early age.

If you notice the change is sudden or your dog suddenly refuses to be touched there, consult a vet for a professional opinion.

How do I teach my dog to let me touch his paws?

If your corgi puppy is older than 16 weeks, it’ll be very unlikely that it’ll ever get used to having its paws touched.

There is no method or “course” to follow.

Other than to constantly make it a habit of touching them quickly every other hour, that’s about it.

This means pretending to “check” for something on your corgi’s feet. Do this before every exercise, bathe, training session, or walk.

Do it randomly. Do it often.

Stick to it even if your corgi refuses, but disengage if it looks like he’ll bite or nip.

It’s a hard thing to do because you need to balance stressing out your corgi and teaching it that it can just growl at you and you’ll back off.

For example, if you touch the front paws and your corgi growls and you stop, this tells the dog that all it needs to do is growl and you’ll stop.

But if you touch the paws and ignore the growling, biting, and flinching, you may end up severely stressing out your dog and making the problem worse.

You’ll just strengthen the existing fear and make the situation go nowhere.

As you can see, there’s no clear-cut solution and every corgi is different.

Tips on desensitizing a corgi to having his paws touched

<img decoding="async" width="1024" height="683" src="https://corgiadoption.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/03/desensitize-corgi-paw-touch-1024x683.jpg" alt="Corgi outdoors." class="wp-image-773" title="Why Does My Corgi Hate Having Its Paws Touched?
Here are a few tips and tricks to get your dog accustomed to paw touching.

Just constantly touch your corgi’s feet. That’s all there is to it. See how he reacts and assess.

Consider signing up with a professional trainer

Teach your dog to shake hands and hold its paw longer than usual

Offer treats after a quick paw touch

Don’t force the touching if your corgi reacts more negatively than before. This only makes the situation tenser.

Acknowledge that not all dogs can be trained to do this

Never use negative reinforcement, especially for something so trivial

Drawbacks with a corgi afraid of paw touching

The good part is that not many activities require you to actually annoy your dog and touch its paws.

However, there are a few drawbacks of having a corgi afraid of touching:

Getting its nails trimmed will be difficult

Putting on dog socks or shoes can be a hassle

Putting on dog clothing can also be a struggle

Vet checks can be difficult

Checking paws for dirt, bugs, or other things

Washing the paws after a walk, rain, or mud

Trimming hair around the feet

Most dogs are sensitive about their front paws and this is not a corgi only thing.

Worried about leaving your corgi alone all day? Here's what you need to know.

So, you’re wondering if you can leave your corgi alone all day.

And you’re thinking if this will have any consequences on the dog.

This is a common question that comes from a lot of people looking to adopt or get a corgi.

We’ll cover common topics like:

Whether you can just leave your corgi alone

How long corgis can tolerate being alone

How to keep your corgi from becoming destructive

Separation anxiety and corgis

And more

Let’s dive right in and explore corgi and separation anxiety.

Can corgis be left alone all day?

The quick answer is “no.” Corgis should not be left alone by themselves all day.

The reason behind this is because they’re bred as a herding breed, which means they were used to herd sheep or other animals while working with their master.

Both Pembroke and Cardigan corgis form tight bonds with their owner or family (as the corgi can be a multi-owner dog). If the owner isn’t present to exercise or keep the corgi busy, the dog will become depressed, stressed, and destructive.

This is why it’s important that you always keep your corgi busy with exercise. They need both physical and mental stimulation on a daily basis, sometimes twice a day.

As long as you can provide this, your corgi should be happy and healthy.

A happy corgi shows off his profile. This is what you should strive for!

Think of this way: The more stimulation you provide your dog, the longer you can leave it on its own.

If you exercise your dog before work and do some mental tasks, you’re okay with leaving it alone for a whole shift at work.

When you come back, repeat the process by taking it on another strenuous exercise regimen.

Play with it. Teach it commands. Make it work. Hard.

This will help stop the dog from becoming bored and eventually depressed and destructive.

Do corgis get separation anxiety?

Corgis get separation anxiety and don’t tolerate being alone.

Corgis get separation anxiety and hate being alone for long periods of time.

If you’re working a full-time job, going to school, or doing something that forces you to be away from your home most of the day, make sure you provide plenty of exercise for your dog on a daily basis.

If you can’t do this, you’re better off with another breed that doesn’t mind being alone.

Do corgis need to be with people?

Corgis will get very anxious and destructive when alone in the house.

This is why you should keep the dog exercised by tiring it out so it can catch a nap or feel satisfied during the time you’re away.

But you should never be away from the dog for more than a typical shift. Even an 8-hour shift is pushing it.

Corgis are social dogs and are best off with a companion, whether it be another dog, pet, or human in the household. They can be pretty high maintenance dogs.

They’re herding dogs and like to see all of their family in one place. They’ve been known to even nip at the heels of kids and family members to “herd” them together.

Are corgis a social breed?

Yes, corgis are considered to be a very social dog breed that requires the companion of family.

They’re bred to herd animals and work with a family of owners, so it makes sense that if this is how corgis were made, they need the companionship of their master.

They’re also known to do well with other pets and dogs, even if they’re different breeds.

How long can corgis be left alone?

Corgis can’t tolerate long periods of loneliness.

That depends on the corgi’s age.

If it’s still a puppy, you should eliminate time away from the dog as much as possible.

This is to properly housebreak the corgi puppy.

The younger the dog, the more often he’ll have to pee. The rule of thumb is:

“Puppy’s age in month + 1”

So if your corgi is 2 months old, adding 1 would mean that it needs to pee every 3 hours.

Puppies need housebreaking training and socialization

You need to spend time with corgi puppies.

This is the problem for corgi puppies. Leaving them alone with no one to take them out for housebreaking training can really hinder progress.

Besides, when the puppy is young, you should be socializing it from weeks 8-12 and spending as much time with it as possible.

Otherwise, it’ll grow up neglected and could develop phobias due to poor socialization. This can lead to excessive shedding, nonstop barking, and other behavioral problems.

Adult corgis can be left alone for longer periods

Adults can tolerate being alone more than puppies.

For adult corgis, they can be left alone for much more time provided that they’re well-socialized.

Some busy corgi owners work full-time jobs and have other commitments and still manage to have their corgis do fine.

As long as you can exercise the dog well (twice per day), it should be okay. A typical 8-10 hour day should be the maximum time you’re away.

You can do one exercise session before your job, and another one afterward. Or you can group them together for an extended and strenuous session.

If you can’t commit to this, consider hiring a dog walker or finding a companion for your corgi.

Corgis aren’t relaxed dogs and will be full of energy so they’ll need walks and playtime to keep them sane.

There is no substitute for spending quality time with your dog.

But for those days where your schedule is too hectic, here are some alternatives:

Hire a dog sitter or dog walker for busy days

Have a trusted neighbor spend time with your corgi

Use automated dog toys

Get family over to your home

Adopt other dogs or pets

Rearrange your schedule or adjust the hours

Do some basic time management and make time for your dog

Sure, it can be hard to manage so many things at once.

But then again, this is something you should be considering before you get a corgi- not after. If you happen to get a dog and you had no idea how little time you actually have, that’s a poor decision on your part.

This is why it’s imperative to always do your research beforehand.

So there you have it.

Corgis are a social dog breed and need constant ways to expend their energy. This can be accomplished through daily walks before/after work or school, and you can use alternative means if you can’t spare the time.

No dog should suffer because of time commitments, as this is something that all owners should be considering before adopting. If you can’t devote the time to properly care for a corgi, consider going with a less-demanding breed.

Don’t be that owner that ends up neglecting the dog! This is exactly what we want to prevent. So help your future dog out and do your research!

Corgi going crazy? Learn how to calm down your corgi and when you should expect your puppy to settle down.

Wondering when your corgi will calm down?!

Corgis are a big bundle of energy from puppyhood until adulthood (and then some!).

In this article, you’ll learn:

Why corgis are so hyper and active

At what age your corgi should start to mature

Ways to calm down your corgi puppy

How to tire and exercise your dog

These smart and stubborn dogs can be calculating, mischievous, and seemingly nonstop puppy action that’ll tire you out before you even put a dent into your corgi’s daily energy expenditure.

Sound good? Let’s dive right in.

Corgis are active dogs

Corgi puppies are anything but lazy.

For first-time corgi owners, they often don’t expect this level of high energy from their puppy.

They often think that all they need to do is bring the dog on one or two walks and that’ll tire out the dog- ready for a full night’s sleep.

But then, they discover that even after the third walk of the day, the corgi puppy still has energy like no other.

This leads to many corgi owners wondering if corgis ever actually calm down. Or at what age do corgis outgrow their puppy stage. Or even what owners can do to keep their corgi exercised and entertained.

We’ll cover some of the most common questions and suggestions here.

The answers given here are not to be set in stone, as most of them are suggestions gathered from personal experience and opinions of everyday corgi owners.

Are corgis calm dogs?

No, generally not.

Corgis are extremely active (it’s in their genes to be herding dogs) and thus require constant attention, exercise, and food. They’re excited, loud, agile, and vocal.

Some owners have even stated that their corgi is out of control, let alone about to abandon and give up on the puppy!

If you’re looking for a puppy that requires minimal care and attention and will be happy sitting in a lap all day- look elsewhere.

The majority of corgis are anything but calm and will require a significant portion of your daily time to raise for the next 24 months.

When do corgis mature and calm down?

Corgis take plenty of time to calm down.

Just like human personalities, there is no exact date or age when a corgi will begin to show signs of calmness.

They don’t settle down that quickly, and some corgis may never fully settle in terms of activity.

Some owners have reported that their corgis started to calm down around 1 to 2 years of age. In the beginning, it can be very difficult to handle a corgi puppy.

It just may very well be a second job for many new owners, given the sheer amount of attention, work, and care that must be given to take care of it.

You may not be able to watch TV, read, or even eat with all the constant attention you need to give the puppy.

The early end of the spectrum seems to be right around the 8-month mark, with most owners reporting around the 2-year mark.

Corgis are extremely active dogs, so it’ll take quite some time before the puppy calms down. If this is something you’re trying to rush, it’s entirely dependent on the dog’s personality.

How you raise the dog has little effect on how quickly or slowly the dog takes to mature. New owners are very surprised at how much energy corgi puppies really have.

My corgi is extremely calm- is it normal?

Yes, some corgis can be calm straight from birth and this is normal.

Although most corgi puppies are raucous and nonstop mischief-makers, some puppies are actually very calm and can be a pleasure to care for straight from the start.

Just like human babies that can be calm and not quarrelsome, there are definitely corgi puppies out there that are of similar effect.

However, most corgi puppies will be hyper and aggressive with a lack of calmness until around 2 years of age.

So enjoy your calm corgi and admire that splooting.

How to calm down a corgi

Corgis are difficult to calm down.

If your corgi is hyper and constantly bouncing around, there’s not much you can do to directly influence this behavior as it’s normal for most puppies no matter the breed.

What you can do is raise it properly so that it’ll settle down into a mature adult that obeys commands and listens to its owner. If nothing is done, the dog may grow up thinking that wrongful behaviors are OK and continue to be destructive even as a corgi adult.

Here are some things you can do at home to calm down your corgi puppy.

Provide a safe place

If your corgi has an established area that it usually sleeps in, move your dog to that area. It’ll recognize that it’s bedtime and possibly settle down.

This means using some soft blankets, the dog bed or create, or whatever other materials your dog is used to remind the dog it’s safe.

Your corgi will associate these materials with sleep, which is a low energy activity and may help calm down your puppy.

This will help alleviate stress, which in turn helps with everything else from healthy shedding to appetitive.

Don’t hype your dog

This can be obvious, but if you want to calm your corgi down, you should act calm also. Corgis will feed off the energy from their environment.

So if you’re bouncing around telling your dog to calm down, it’s probably not going to work. Talk in a calm, soothing voice and your dog will mirror the same.

Use slow petting

When you pet your dog, move slowly and use full, slow petting on the body.

Don’t excite the corgi by brushing or petting quickly. Use slow and repetitive movements. Watch its tail for excitement if you have a Cardigan or undocked Pembroke corgi.

The faster you pet, the faster the tail wags. You’ll want to keep wagging to a minimum.

Play soothing music

Dogs respond to their environment, and using soft and calm music can help calm your corgi.

This is very useful for new puppies that are adjusting to a new environment. You can play some classical music to help reduce their stress, anxiety, and fear.

Use music without dramatic sounds and no vocals.

Here’s an example of a soundtrack you can play:

Use a chew toy

The puppy may respond to chew toys which can help soothe their teeth before they sleep.

Chew toys also help keep them distracted and attentive to the toy rather than stressful or frightening situations.

Play with your dog

As simple as it sounds, giving your puppy your complete attention and distracting it from being destructive or hyper can help calm down your corgi. This means doing low energy activities like taking a walk or doing tricks.

Teach your dog the “calm” command

You can teach your corgi to be “calm” or “settle” so you can use it when necessary.

For example, if you’re out in public and your corgi goes crazy, you can use a settle command to make it relax.

You can also use it when the dog gets too rough during play or when it gets hyped up due to the surrounding environment.

The “settle” command can be taught by using clicker training when your dog calms down. Wait for your dog to settle and simmer down, click, then reward. Repeat and use a phrase like “calm” or “settle down.”

Don’t beg and don’t be excited during training, even if your dog gets the command. You want your corgi to calm down and stay calm, rather than becoming riled up right after the command is performed. Use soft praises and petting with a no-nonsense tone.

How to tire out a corgi

You can help calm down your corgi by exercise.

Along with regular walks and plenty of both physical and mental exercise, you can keep your corgi entertained and tire it out by doing any of these activities.

Feel free to repeat them multiple times per day until you notice that your puppy is noticeably more tired (lying down, panting, moving slower, etc.).

Play Tug of War

There have been reports that a simple game of Tug O’ War can be a strength-building, bonding, and strenuous exercise all at once.

Sometimes you should let your dog actually keep possession of the rope, but keep this to a minimum as you don’t want the dog to think it’s dominant over you.

This means by tugging a rope from your corgi’s mouth back and forth (watch out for the teeth!) can be a very strenuous and useful exercise for your puppy.

Just dangle the rope in front of the dog a few times to get his attention, and then start tugging back and forth for 10 minutes.

Repeat and switch it up with different ropes, textures, and environments to prevent the dog from getting accustomed to it and bored.

Play Fetch

Another old-time classic dog game is Fetch. You can toss a tennis ball, stick, or use an apparatus to launch a ball over and over again.

Corgis are very active and need to work to please their owners.

Corgis that are lazy or sedentary will become destructive, sad, and depressed over time. If you’re feeling very lazy, you can even buy an automated ball launcher for an automatic way to play Fetch.

Go on bike rides

In an open area that’s secure, you can ride your bike with your corgi running by your side.

Biking is extremely easy on the joints and uses very little energy for you, so you can bike for miles without feeling tired.

Your dog, on the other hand, will be getting plenty of exercises that are gruesome and extremely healthy for the body. Just be sure to take breaks in timed intervals and supply water each time.

Watch your corgi’s running speed as each time you bike, your dog will be able to run fewer minutes as it gets more and more tired. This is a quick and efficient way to tire out your corgi and keep it exercised.

You now have everything you need to know to help calm down your corgi!

Most puppies will settle down right around the 2-year mark, but just like humans, there will be some corgi puppies that calm faster and others later.

Always be patient with your puppy and teach it the right commands and behaviors. This will lead to an obedient, well-trained, and happy corgi!
