Considering getting a corgi, but suffer from allergies? Find out if corgis are hypoallergenic and if they're right for you. And if not, see other breeds that are similar to corgis for allergy sufferers.

So, you have allergies and you’re wondering to yourself: “Are corgis hypoallergenic?”

The short answer: No, they’re not.

The long answer: But it’s more than just whether or not they’re hypoallergenic.

Even if you have allergies, a corgi MAY not trigger them.

But there’s more to it than that. You should always consult your healthcare provider first BEFORE you do anything involving a corgi.

In this article, we’ll cover:

The definition of a hypoallergenic dog

Why not allergy sufferers will react to dogs

What you should do if you have allergies but want a corgi

Corgis and shedding

Other alternative breeds for people with allergies

Other FAQs

Let’s dive in and see if a corgi is right for allergy sufferers.

Last updated: 7/22/21.

What exactly does it mean for a dog to be hypoallergenic?

You’ve seen this buzzword on mattresses, blankets, clothing, and even vacuum cleaners

To be hypoallergenic, all it really means is that there’s a minimal chance of an allergic reaction.

If you’re someone sensitive to allergies and you’re considering getting a corgi, you definitely need to do your research first before buying one only to find out he makes you sneeze, cough, and flare up every time you pet him.

And don’t forget to consider the possibility of your dog tracking in allergy triggering stimuli from the outdoors- especially if you’ve never owned a dog before.

There’s a lot to consider and at stake here because once you bring in a dog, it’s very difficult to sterilize and clean your home from all the dander.

So don’t rush through this just because the joy of dog ownership is blurring your vision. Think it through. Consider going to see the corgi at a controlled environment with a change of clothes so you don’t bring home the triggers.

So, are corgis hypoallergenic?

You think all this corgi fur will play nicely with allergies?

Corgis are NOT hypoallergenic. They’re far from it. This breed is a dubious shedder and will leave corgi fur (AKA “corgi glitter”) everywhere.

You’ll find their fur getting into areas you’ve never expected- even your food!

Remember though- there’s no such thing as a 100% hypoallergenic dog. There ARE dogs that shed less (or not at all), but ALL dogs have some level of pet dander.

Plus, don’t forget that even if you have only mild allergies, your dog can bring in pollen, dust, and other particles that can cause an allergic reaction from the OUTDOORS.

These dogs will show no mercy and shed everywhere.

You’ll see corgi hair on your pajamas, work clothes, carpet, computer keyboard, couch, bed, and even on your closet which you thought would protect your clothes in the first place!

Even if you have other dogs or cats and plan to get a corgi, they have different stimuli in their fur.

Do corgis shed a lot?

Yes, corgis shed plenty.

They’re one of the most excessive breeds and top the list of heavy shedders. This makes it easy to trigger allergies with so many strands of hair everywhere.

Because of their excessive shedding, there’s no way to even remotely consider corgis hypoallergenic.

They blow their coat twice per year when the seasons change but ask any corgi owner and they’ll tell you there’s no letting up on the shedding.

So if you don’t like tons of dog fur everywhere or there’s someone in your home that has allergies, consider getting another breed. Corgis won’t do it. Sorry.

Note that there ARE some people who have allergies, but corgi fur won’t trigger them.

Allergies are a complicated situation and it’s important to see a doctor to get an assessment to see what’s causing it.

Just because you have allergies does NOT mean you’ll be allergic to corgis. It depends on the stimulus.

Are any corgis hypoallergenic?

No, both recognized breeds are NOT hypoallergenic.

There are two breeds of corgis recognized by the AKC:

Pembroke Welsch Corgi

Cardigan Welsch corgi

Both of them have thick, dense double coats that protect them from the elements. And both are them are crazy shedders. Therefore, all purebred corgis are not hypoallergenic.

These dogs were bred to herd animals, protecting their territory, and even swim to fetch from the lake.

Their fur will trigger many people who have allergies, but there will always be those who can tolerate the fur.

Some people have only mild and manageable reactions. Every single person’s reactions will be different, so some testing is needed to pinpoint the source.

What can be done if you’re allergic to corgis?

Allergies are usually managed by mediations, sprays, creams, or simply eliminating pet dander.

There’s no way to “get rid” of allergies, as they can surface at any time and may wane temporarily.

You could be a corgi owner for years and have no reaction. But then, one day out of blue, you start sneezing, getting a runny nose, itchy eyes, and postnasal drip. What happened?

Allergies can subside over time and rise up just as easily. It’s pretty painful to see someone have to give up their corgi because of their reactions.

That’s why you should always get tested before adopting or buying a corgi from a breeder. You need a sample of the corgi hair and then an allergy panel.

Your professional can determine the specific triggers and give you a plan if you really want a corgi, but suffer from allergies.

For those that have only mild reactions to pet dander, it may be possible to live with a corgi as long as proper precautions are taken.

Cleaning up your home by vacuuming, dusting, and using air purifiers may help reduce symptoms.

However, you should ALWAYS speak with your provider first before attempting anything with a corgi- including living with one.

Don’t take any chances because you don’t know how you’ll react. Sometimes, you may not have serious allergies until later on, which can be very dangerous.

Again, always consult with your healthcare provider first.

If possible, bring some corgi dander to get tested with your provider to assess your allergic stimuli reaction.

Consider a mixed corgi

Mixed breeds may shed less than purebred corgis.

There are plenty of corgi mixes available that may have lesser shedding compared to a purebred. You can do your research and on different mixed breeds.

As long as the fur gene is inherited from the other breed, the dog will follow similar shedding patterns assuming it’s a dominant trait. There may be mixed shedding, so you’ll want to be careful.

Adopting a mixed breed corgi proves to be much more effective in gauging the shedding.

Since the dog is already grown up (most likely), you’ll have a good idea of how much he sheds before you bring him home.

A mixed puppy definitely is harder to tell.

Unless the breeder has a genetic panel, you won’t know for sure how the dog will be when it grows up. This should be addressed if you have allergies 100%.

Which dog is best for allergy sufferers?

There are plenty of dogs that are more suitable for people with allergies, rather than corgis.

Although no dog is absolutely 100% hypoallergenic, some dogs rarely shed and this may make it easier to manage the environment and prevent/control any reactions.

Having lesser amounts of hair to clean up also makes it less of a chore. If dog fur annoys you or you can’t stand it, you’ll want to check out alternative breeds.

Corgis are not hypoallergenic

Although corgis are perfect and quirky in their own ways, such as being protective, playful, bold, loyal, agile, and extremely smart, they (sadly) don’t have the attribute of a low-shed coat.

These dogs do offer a bountiful amount of positives, but for allergy sufferers, there are plenty of other breeds with similar dog characteristics as corgis.

If you’re an allergy sufferer with a corgi, please leave your tips below for others to read!

Hypoallergenic dogs similar to corgis

<img decoding="async" src="https://corgiadoption.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/07/alternative-corgi-breeds-1-829x1024.jpg" alt="Poodles are hypoallergenic." class="wp-image-1329" width="424" height="523" title="Are Corgis Hypoallergenic?
For those who just can’t get a corgi because of their reactions, there are other breeds that far well for sensitive individuals.

And they have a similar disposition in terms of behavior and personality to corgis.

Here are some alternative breeds worth considering:

Unless you only have mild symptoms or have your allergies under control, you should probably look elsewhere because corgis are excessive shedders and can make your time together very difficult.

Thankfully, there are plenty of other breeds that can suit your lifestyle. Corgis aren’t the only breed that’s playful, loyal, smart, and bold. There are plenty of other alternatives you can consider.

It shouldn’t be a question of corgi vs. another breed they’re all DOGS. The best friend a person can possibly get!

So don’t feel bad if you can’t get a corgi. You may even run into serendipity with some other awesome, caring, and loving breed you’ve never considered before.

Does your corgi eat his own poop? Or the poop from other animals? Find out why your corgi does this and how to stop the behavior.

So, your corgi is eating poop. And it’s absolutely disgusting.

You’re scared of the dog passing germs to you.

You can’t kiss your corgi.

Your corgi’s breath is repulsive.

Shouldn’t your corgi know to not eat his (or others’) poop? Why is he doing this nasty behavior anyway?

In this article, we’ll cover:

Why corgis and dogs eat poop

How common the behavior is

Whether or not corgi puppies grow out of it

Why your corgi may be eating his own feces out of nowhere

How to stop your corgi from eating poop

When to see the vet, and what to ask

Sound good? Let’s get your corgi’s poop-eating behavior curbed.

Okay, so let’s get one thing out of the way first.

Corgis will eat poop. It’s not specific to this breed as many dogs will do it by instinct.

There are a lot of theories floating on the web for why they do this, but there’s no scientific proof anywhere that explains this behavior.

The act of eating poop is called coprophagia and it’s quite common in dogs, especially puppies. It’s a nicer way to label “my dog eats his or others’ poop and enjoys it.”

Many people just believe that it’s an instinctive habit and many dogs do it.

Some corgis will eat their own poop. Some will eat other animal poop. And some will eat all poop. Gross.

Why does my corgi eat poop?

The general belief is that when the puppy’s mother has a litter, she’ll eat the poop of her young to hide the scent from predators.

In nature, the puppies are sheltered in a den safe from the outside world, and poop that lies around can attract wandering threats.

So the parent eats the poop to hide the smell. Thus, eliminating the threat (or at least lowering the chance of a predator sniffing them out).

And the puppy will pick up on this behavior– therefore continuing to eat poop well into puppyhood.

But to us humans, this is a behavior that’s just plain nasty.

Your corgi may be eating droppings from:

Other dogs’ poop

Horse poop

Coyote poop

Rabbit poop

Cat poop

Bird poop

Goose poop

And of course, his own poop

Whatever the case, there’s no way that you’ll want to give him puppy kisses after he laps up one of those!

Malnutrition

There’s also an argument that consuming feces helps dogs get some nutrients they need if they’re deficient in them.

An enzyme, vitamin, and nutrient deficiency are all common when the pup is still young. Parasites and malabsorption can also trigger a corgi to consume his poop.

You should have your vet examine your dog’s stool every visit when you go to the vet for his booster shots. This is during the first 16 weeks of your dog’s life and a stool exam can rule out common problems the dog may be suffering from.

After that, take your corgi for a stool exam every 6 months to continue monitoring.

Dogs that eat the poop of other animals like horse droppings, rabbit poop, or even cat poop may be low in enzymes and vitamins.

Vitamin B is very rich in rabbit poop and dogs may eat up those pellets packed full of vitamins. But to us, that’s just gross.

Whether the poop is dry, moist, fresh, stale, old, crusted, your dog may gobble the feces up like a delicacy!

Behavioral problems

Some dogs will also eat poop due to stress and anxiety.

Many times, new corgi owners will punish their dog for going poop in the home by scolding them with negative reinforcement.

So the dog learns to either go when the owner’s not looking or eat their own poop to hide it from them.

Corgis that are starved may also eat poop to recycle nutrients. This may be present in kennels and shelters.

Puppy mills also have a reputation for breeding dogs that develop coprophagia because of the poor conditions they’re raised in.

Often, the puppies are competing for food at a communal source and the smaller pups are left out.

So they eat their own feces to get the nutrients they need.

This is another reason why you should never support puppy mills and only buy from reputable breeders or corgi adoption centers.

Learned behavior

Lastly, the act could be learned from other dogs.

When your corgi witnesses another dog eating his poop, your corgi may reciprocate the behavior.

Dogs are social creatures, especially corgis, and will learn from one another over time.

So if your corgi never ate poop but then suddenly started, he may have picked it up from another dog. They often follow the alpha dog and will pick up behaviors rapidly.

Do corgis grow out of eating poop?

Your corgi may be eating poop for nutrition, due to stress, or just from behavior.

This depends on the reason behind the behavior.

It’s very common for puppies to consume their own feces for some time throughout puppyhood.

But for dogs that suddenly start eating poop or adult corgis, this could be some other reasons such as nutrient deficiency, anxiety, stress, behavioral problems, fear, or even an acquired behavior from another dog.

After all, dogs are pack animals. Puppies will often grow out of the behavior ONLY if the underlying problem is corrected.

You shouldn’t depend on your corgi to “learn” himself out of it and stop the behavior on his own.

Often, it doesn’t just go away and stop by itself. You need to be proactive and do something to fix the behavior. This is easier when the puppy is still young during the corgi’s socialization period.

Be proactive, not reactive.

Can my corgi get sick from eating poop?

Corgis can definitely get sick from consuming feces.

Similar to humans not eating human feces, you don’t want your corgi to eat poop either.

Whether the poop is his own poop or the poop of another animal, the droppings are one of the most disease-ridden, bacterial-laden, and virus harboring things you can ingest.

This is why you need to discourage the behavior quickly.

You corgi may suffer health effects from regular consumption:

Vomiting

Diarrhea

Parasites and worms

Bad breath

Dental hygiene problems

Constipation

There’s also the possibility that your corgi can transfer bacteria and viruses to you when he licks you, salivates, or sneezes. Pretty nasty.

This makes it critical that you monitor what your corgi is sniffing when you take him out on walks, especially in nature trails.

There can be a huge variety of different animals in the area leaving behind their “presents” for your corgi to scout out- horses, cats, coyotes, wildcats, and more.

How to stop corgis from eating poop

<img decoding="async" width="1024" height="683" src="https://corgiadoption.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/07/stop-corgi-eating-poop-1024x683.jpg" alt="A corgi outdoors." class="wp-image-1293" title="Why Does My Corgi Eat Poop?
There are many different techniques you can use, but here are some easy ones that you can start with right away.

You need to assess the situation and see what’s going on.

Clean it up

Right after your corgi does his business, clean up the feces.

Don’t let it sit until the end of the day or else that provides the stimulus for him to consume.

Use a doggy bag or broom and get rid of it ASAP.

Although this doesn’t necessarily FIX the problem, it does eliminate the possibility of him gobbling up last night’s dinner- for the second time!

Use MSG

MSG is supposedly bitter to dogs and will have them reject their own feces. It’s reported to be harmless to dogs but will metabolize during digestion so that the dog’s poop will taste bitter.

You can try adding a small amount to your dog’s next meal and see if it works. Don’t overdo it.

MSG can be bought at the grocery store as a meat tenderizer.

Some products are pure MSG and you can find these on the shelves (Accent, Durkee, Monosodium glutamate).

Be sure to consult with your vet first before adding any to your dog’s diet.

Sensitive corgis may have reactions to MSG as it does alter the taste of the food and may have other effects.

Avoid the stimuli

When you take your corgi out and about, always watch out for what he eats.

Whether you live on a farm or you’re going to a national park, stay on trail and scout ahead for droppings.

Tighten the leash (you should be practicing loose leash walking anyway) for dogs that are untrained to walk on a short leash.

And avoid the mess. You’ll often see that your corgi will sniff it a few times before eating the poop.

This is your chance to avoid him eating it and steer him clear.

Redirect your corgi

You can train your corgi using positive reinforcement to stop eating poop in general. If your dog gives you a small window of opportunity, use it to train him to stop eating it.

Just like teaching “leave it” or “drop it” you can apply the same techniques to avoiding poop. In fact, “leave it” may work in this case if your corgi has already been trained that command.

But if not, then train him the command and you can use it for all sorts of messes on the ground you come across.

The problem with training him to just avoid his poop is that the command may not work when he comes across horse poop, cat poop, bird poop, or even other dogs’ poop.

But if you train him to use the “leave it “command, this works across everything from poop to nails to sticks and stones.

Why make more work on yourself when you can teach one command for everything?:

Here’s a video teaching the basics of the command. Learn it:

It’s a valuable tool to have and can see your dog a visit to the vet.

Use pineapple

Pineapple supposedly stops dogs from consuming their feces.

The scent of pineapple draws them away after it comes out the other end and you only need a few small chunks. This has mixed reports online and I can’t confirm whether or not this works.

However, it’s worth a try if you’re looking for a quick fix.

Assess the diet

Some corgis will consume poop because they’re not getting enough nutrients from their regular diet.

You’ll want to only feed a high-quality, complete dog food.

Whether you use wet or dry food, make sure that you’re buying the best quality food you can afford.

You can also supplement with digestive enzymes to help your dog get the dietary compounds he needs and also consider adding meal probiotics to your dog’s feedings.

You’ll need to consult and ask your vet about adding or changing supplements to your dog’s diet before making any changes.

Get a fecal exam

You can get a fecal done at your vet for a relatively cheap price- it’s not as expensive as you think.

They’ll collect a stool sample and send it in to a lab for analysis.

You’ll get the result soon after and your professional can tell you about the stool quality and if they notice any problems.

When your dog has problems like coprophagia, getting the stool checked out is a must, especially if your corgi practices the behavior all of a sudden.

The turnaround may be even faster if it’s a full-service animal hospital.

Ensure that your corgi receives sufficient exercise

Your corgi may be bored out of his mind and getting lazy. This can lead to negative, unwanted behaviors such as coprophagia.

Regular exercise on a schedule will keep your dog mentally and physically stimulated when you mix in some training and logic games with your corgi.

Also, exercise helps your corgi’s digestion and makes for regular bowel movements.

Not only does it help keep your dog healthy physically and mentally, but the act of exercising also allows for a happy corgi through bonding with the owner.

Plus, happy dogs that are busy will have a lower chance of developing bad behaviors like barking, biting, and possibly eating poop.

Relocate litter boxes

For those that have a corgi with a cat, you’ll need to relocate the litter box to somewhere that the dog can’t reach.

This will stop your corgi from consuming the cat’s feces.

Use an OTC medication

There are dozens of OTC medications that are made to help stop your dog from eating poop.

The drugs are usually fine powders that are used to dust your dog’s stool and naturally deters your dog from eating it.

Others are medications that are to be consumed with your dog’s meal and make your dog’s poop not as appealing to him. You’ll need to ask your vet before adding any medication to your dog’s lifestyle.

What to ask the vet

You should always take your dog to the vet as soon as you notice the behavior.

The longer you let him continually eat his droppings, the more reinforced the behavior becomes.

This applies to both behaviors where your dog eats his own feces or the feces of other unknown animals.

Here are some things you should document and provide to your vet:

When you first noticed the behavior

The food you’re feeding your dog

Any supplements or medications you’re providing for your dog

How much food you’re giving your corgi

Here are some questions you should ask yourself and talk about with your vet:

Does your dog only eat his poop?

Does your corgi eat the poop of other animals?

Were there any recent changes in diet?

Were there any lifestyle changes recently?

Does your corgi get enough exercise? Has the regimen changed?

Has your corgi been stressed, fearful, or anxious lately?

Did you notice any other behavioral changes?

Your vet may ask you additional questions and will recommend a treatment plan to stop the coprophagia. A corgi puppy eating his own poop is usually not a behavioral problem.

Keep everything documented so you can report your findings to your vet, and don’t rush things.

It’ll take time to stop if the behavior is ingrained into your corgi’s behavior and it may take some trial and error to find the exact root cause of the coprophagia.

Did you stop your corgi’s coprophagia?

The behavior is disgusting, but nothing that you can’t control and manage.

With proper process and some patience, you can get to the bottom of the behavior and find out what’s causing it.

Consult your vet for advice first. Then offer some of the remedies you plan to try to see what your vet has to say about it.

After you get approval, see if it works to stop the behavior. There can only be so many causes, but once you find it, fix it, and eliminate it, then you’ll be good to go with those puppy kisses once again!

Thinking about adding a corgi to your family, but you have a cat? Or vice versa? Wondering about corgi and cat compatibility. Find out what you need to know.

So, you’re wondering about corgis and if they’re good with cats.

You’re probably thinking of adopting or buying a corgi.

But you’re not sure if Fido will get along with Oliver.

In this article, we’ll talk about:

Safety precautions of allowing a cat and your corgi to interact

Different ways to predict if your corgi will accept a cat, or if a cat will accept your corgi

How to gauge behaviors and what to look out for when socializing them

Signs of a corgi that’ll likely get along with cats (and cats that get along with corgis)

Socialization of your corgi to kittens

How to introduce a corgi to your cat

And other FAQs

By the end of this guide, you should be able to have a solid understanding of whether or not corgis are good with cats, how to get them accustomed to each other, and signs/behaviors to help you out during the socialization period.

And if you have any questions, post a comment below!

Sound good? Let’s get your corgi a new feline friend!

Safety first

Note that behavior between cats and corgis is unpredictable, even for established relationships between the two species.

You should always consult a professional animal behaviorist for advice BEFORE allowing them to interact with each other.

The material here solely is to be used for educational advice and is NOT intended to be a program or substitute any advice of any degree whatsoever for your pets.

Do NOT proceed without consulting a certified animal behavioralist.

Doing so could lead to serious harm, physical trauma, mental trauma, or other consequences to your pets that could be irreversible. You assume complete responsibility and full liability for your actions. Proceed at your own risk.

Corgis and cats can turn on each other in a split second, even if they’re friendly with each other for extended periods.

ALWAYS exercise caution using controlled environments and under 100% supervision with a capable and competent trainer.

Are corgis good with cats? – Corgi and cat compatibility

Corgis can be socialized early to be friendly with cats.

Corgis are known to be very protective dogs to their entire family.

They’re not generally one-owner dogs and will bond with all family members equally.

They’re bred for herding farm animals, which is why they make awesome exercise partners or guard dogs to protect the home. So they’ll often round up family members all into one room- it drives them crazy if you’re all separated.

Otherwise, how does this relate to cats?

Because if you adopt a corgi that’s already an adult, you may be bringing home a dog that’s highly aggressive or evasive towards cats.

You don’t know the history of how it was raised, and you don’t know if cats are a positive or negative stimuli to it. This can be a problem.

If you already have a cat and you’re thinking of adding a corgi to the family, the best way to do this is to adopt or buy a corgi when it’s young.

Early socialization to cats, people, sights, and sounds is critical for a well-behaved corgi.

This breed is known for its herding abilities and strong dominant traits to bark and nip at other animals (including humans) to get them moving.

After all, that’s what they’re bred for. Genes tell a story.

This is why adopting a corgi can be tricky if you already have a cat.

A corgi that never grew up around cats may have an aggressive or frightened reaction when you introduce them to each other.

While it’s not impossible to get the two accustomed, it can be difficult if the dog is older.

That’s why starting with a young puppy (8-12) weeks makes socialization easier to cats, but only if the process is done correctly.

The dog must have a positive experience with the cat or else things can go awry.

Even then, some corgis may never be able to be calm and relaxed around felines as they enjoy the thrill of herding and chasing other species.

And then you also have to consider the fact that cats may also be a wildcard.

Even if your corgi accepts the cat, the cat may not accept the corgi! There’s a lot of factors at play so there’s really no telling what’ll happen.

I have a corgi, but I’m planning to get a cat

<img decoding="async" width="1024" height="683" src="https://corgiadoption.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/06/corgi-and-cat-compatibility-1024x683.jpg" alt="Corgi meeting his feline friend." class="wp-image-1276" title="Are Corgis Good With Cats?
Corgis can be very territorial as they have a protective nature.

After all, they were used to protect entire acres of farmland and herd animals back in Wales.

Because of this, a new cat added to the family may be a threat to your corgi’s existing territory.

And this will cause aggressive behavior from your dog. This makes it difficult to gauge how your dog will respond to the new feline in the family.

And to make matters even more complex, if the cat is still a kitten, the cat may experience a negative reaction to the dog and this can lead to unpredictable behavior. If your corgi is older, territory and behavior patterns are already established.

This is a bad time to add a cat to the family, unless you know your dog has been socialized to cats. If not, they MUST be controlled when they first meet each other.

You already have a routine built with your dog and once the cat starts taking up your precious time together that was once all Fido’s, things can start getting ugly.

Excessive barking, whining, or abnormal behavior are all to be expected.

Do corgis and cats get along?

There is no absolute answer for this and it entirely depends on both the cat and corgi’s personalities. And there’s no way to tell if cats and corgis are compatible.

But the major deciding factor? Early socialization.

Getting a corgi as a puppy is the best time to introduce him to your cat.

When the dog is still young, they’re more accepting of everything.

You could even train your dog to let her be the dominant one in the household! This is the highest chance of success you can possibly get.

Early socialization matters

Your corgi has the best possible chance to become friends with your cat if socialized properly.

Adopt or buy the corgi as a puppy and always use positive, controlled associations when they interact with each other.

Remember that this critical, “magical” period only allows for the first 16 weeks (4 months) of your dog’s life.

After this window expires, it’s very difficult to get your dog accustomed to anything- especially a new household member that’s an entirely different species.

If this isn’t an option for you (maybe the corgi is older), it’s not impossible.

You can inquire about the history of the dog:

Has he previously been raised around cats or other animals?

Has socialization work been done already?

Does he have a submissive or docile personality?

If the answer is a resounding “no” to all, you can still try by setting up a controlled environment and using best practices to introduce your corgi to your cat.

Even if you adopt a corgi that’s on the older side, it can still be perfectly happy with a cat companion.

There are examples of this all over the ‘net:

Depending on the corgi’s personality, he may accept the cat and become best friends and do everything together, just like you see in the movies.

So don’t be discouraged if you plan on adopting an older corgi and you have a cat.

Or if you already have an adult corgi and you want to adopt a kitten. It goes both ways.

Rules, tips, and tricks

<img decoding="async" src="https://corgiadoption.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/06/corgi-mad-at-cat-681x1024.jpg" alt="A corgi that's not good with cats being constrained for bad behavior." class="wp-image-1279" width="352" height="529" title="Are Corgis Good With Cats?
There are some tips that definitely help the process of getting the two species to get accustomed to each other.

Like any other habit-building methodology, it’s best to start early in your dog’s life as a puppy.

Even better, get a puppy and a kitten at the same time for the highest chance of success.

Here are some rules to drill into your corgi’s behavior:

The cat is off limits

You should never let your dog chase the cat.

Discourage this behavior by disciplining your corgi at an early age to lay down the foundation and set up good habits.

Don’t allow aggressive behavior

Any signs of aggression that the corgi exhibits should be controlled and assessed.

Find out what’s causing it. Is it something that the cat’s doing? Or is just the corgi’s natural behavior?

See if there’s a remedy to correct it. This can be tricky, so you may need the help of a licensed dog behavioral specialist.

Always use positive association

When the corgi and cat are allowed to play with each other, always make it positive.

Use treats, praise, and rewards for good behavior.

Try to match personalities

A calm, relaxed cat should be paired with a relaxed dog.

Don’t try to match polar opposites because this makes them unfit for each other.

Discourage negative behaviors

Separate them immediately when negative, unwanted behaviors are shown.

This goes for both of them. If your corgi gets too aggressive during playtime, separate them right away. This will teach the dog that “doing this bad behavior ends playtime.”

Corgis are smart dogs and will learn quickly, but you must separate them right when the behavior takes place. They learn by association and the window to show a cause and effect relationship between behavior and consequence only lasts a few seconds.

Know their personalities

You need to know both your cat and dog’s individual personalities.

One may be used to the other’s species from previous exposure, but the other could be seeing them for the first time.

This could lead to preventing unpredictable behaviors by obtaining this knowledge beforehand.

Check the dog’s focus

See where your corgi’s attention is being directed to.

Dogs that are only staring or dead set on watching the cat could be nothing but trouble for you and your cat.

Your dog could be waiting and timing his attack.

Don’t let your dog loose. Use a confined area or secure leash. He could pounce on the cat as soon as you unleash him.

Don’t be fooled by his temporary behavior while constrained on the leash.

After all, corgis are smart and can manipulate their owners, especially first-time corgi owners. The same can go for the cat. Aggressive cats that snarl, hiss, and swipe can be dangerous to your corgi.

See if there are changes in behavior

Check to see your cat’s diet changes.

Eating less could be a sign of stress or illness, which can be because of the dog. If she stops drinking, eating, constantly hides, or shows some other changes in behavior, this is a sign that your cat warrants a vet checkup.

The same goes for your corgi. If he suddenly has a change in diet, exercise, weight, or behavior, you’ll want to get him checked out by a professional, especially if the change lasts more than a few days.

When they first meet each other, changes in behavior is to be expected.

However, ongoing changes that don’t revert to “normal” levels could be a sign of sickness or stress.

Seek a professional animal behaviorist or veterinarian for help.

Watch for danger

Corgis that chase, pin, or lunge at cats already show very negative behaviors. You may never be able to get them to associate with each other.

Snarling, growling and barking are all signs that your corgi would prefer to be alone. The same goes for a cat that growls, scratches, or tries to flee constantly from your dog.

Don’t force things. If it doesn’t work out, then it doesn’t work out.

Mind the chasing

Dogs love to chase, especially corgis. If your corgi chases a cat that constantly runs away, this can be a repeated trigger for the dog to constantly chase the cat away.

You want to stop the behavior right away before he keeps doing it over and over. Cats can also exhibit chasing to dogs, so it’s not only the corgi’s fault.

Only allow interaction within controlled environments

This goes without saying. They should only be able to make contact, play, or otherwise see each other when the environment is controlled.

A “controlled” environment means:

You can easily step in and intervene to stop bad behavior

Both the dog and cat can easily escape

There’s always at least one person supervising their interaction (two if possible- one for each species)

This can be done through the use of crates, perches, x-pens, and more.

How to introduce a corgi to cats

Whatever the situation you have going on, you want to make sure that both your corgi and cat are in a controlled environment.

Even if you’re 100% sure that your dog is properly socialized and accepting of cats, you still don’t know how the cat will react to the dog.

And we’ve all seen plenty of cartoons to know that dogs and cats are polar opposites.

Use a confined environment

Start by using an x-pen for the dog and a perch or tall pen for the cat. They should be within a few inches of each other, but not close enough for them to contact each other (a paw’s length).

Be careful because the cat can scratch your corgi, and your corgi can nip your cat with its long muzzle.

Some people recommend that the cat have free reign with the dog confined to a crate or pen. If you’re sure that they can’t hurt each other, this is acceptable.

The American Humane Society for Pets suggests that the dog be taken to another room to allow the cat to check out the smell of the dog.

Assess their behaviors

See and gauge how they react. They’ll likely be extremely curious. One will assert dominance right away (probably the corgi) and scare the other.

This will go on for a few minutes and eventually they may calm down.

You’ll want to make them “bored” of each other before moving to the next step. This will take several exposures for set time intervals over the course of many days.

Be patient

You can reward them with treats during the process and try to associate it with good emotions.

Your cat should have an escape route so it doesn’t feel trapped. Use a high perch so it has a bird’s eye view, but not too tall where it can jump into the dog’s pen.

Wait for the corgi to get comfortable with the cat

After you’ve reached the point where they no longer express aggressive behavior, you can slowly allow them to touch each other at a paw’s distance.

If your dog or cat exhibits signs of aggression or fear, lower your expectations and go back a step. You must do this or else it can lead to injuries or trauma.

Slowly allow on-leash exploration and interaction between your corgi and cat

Eventually, assuming everything goes right, you should be able to leash your dog and let your cat approach it slowly.

This will be the first time they’re allowed to fully check each other out, but it should still be only under controlled conditions.

Always use a controlled environment

Make sure that the situations you put them in allowing them to escape from each other quickly on their own will.

Don’t force them to make contact with each other. This is a recipe for disaster.

The dog should be kept on a leash and allow the dog to become bored and starts to divert his attention elsewhere.

The cat should also be calm and doing the regular cat routine- such as eating and using the litter box.

Things to watch out for

Here are two critical periods to watch out for.

There are some things you should be especially cautious of when letting your corgi and cat be together.

During feedings

When your dog or cat eats, this can be pretty dangerous if either pet gets nosy of the other’s food or protective of their own.

Some dogs are very aggressive and will resource guard their food. They may bark, snarl, or bite anything that they deem as a threat to their food (even humans), like this corgi:

You should never feed your corgi and cat at the same time, and never in the same room. Don’t let them ever see each other eating.

During play

When your corgi plays with his favorite toy, you may have seen him growl or bark at you when you try to remove it from him.

Maybe something like this:

Never seen it? Congrats. You have socialized corgi that doesn’t resource guard- his toys, at least!

Regardless, if you let your cat in the same room during playtime, the cat may end up getting curious and checking out the dog’s toys. If your dog is aggressive or protective, he may end up injuring your cat. Remember, curiosity killed the cat.

This is why you need to make sure that the cat stays away when you play with your dog. Toys like ropes, tennis balls, bones, and Kong toys should all be kept away from the cat.

Or just keep the cat confined to another room.

The same goes for the cat. When you play with your cat, don’t let your dog interfere. Your corgi may even try to claim one of her toys as his own!

So, your corgi loves to eat grass. And you’re worried if this is normal or harmful to his health.

In this article, we’ll cover some popular questions about grass consumption:

Will your corgi have difficulty passing stools?

Does grass digest?

How to stop your corgi from eating so much grass

Does your corgi constantly throw up?

If it’s normal to munch on grass

When to see a vet about the behavior

And more

Let’s get your questions answered.

Why does my corgi eat grass?

There’s really no specific reason why a dog would eat grass.

There are speculations that dogs generally eat grass when they have a stomach ache and grass has relieving properties. But this isn’t proven scientifically and is nothing more than a rumor.

And by “relieving,” I don’t mean that grass calms their stomach. it actually induces vomiting and this can help them get rid of a disturbance that’s causing them stomach pain.

Corgi puppies are known to eat grass more than adults. Most puppies will grow out if by the time they’re 1 year of age.

They may lose their interest in eating it over time, or perhaps it’s because after they vomit for the first time, they register it as a negative experience.

There’s really no solid evidence either way.

But generally, corgis will grow out of eating it as they age.

Is it normal for corgis to eat grass?

Corgis will eat grass out of habit.

Yes, dogs will eat grass no matter what breed they are. Corgis included.

This behavior generally stems from puppyhood and they’ll lie down in the sun and just munch on grass. You may even notice that your pup comes back inside your house with a grass sticking out of his mouth.

This is normal behavior.

However, if your corgi consumes it on frequently, you’ll want to ask yourself:

Was there a trigger prior to eating the grass?

What was your corgi doing right before he went to the grass?

How much is he eating?

Does he vomit afterwards?

Depending on your answers to these, it can be a normal and healthy behavior that’s natural to them.

Or he can be acting on the age old tale of trying to make himself throw up because of something he ate earlier.

Grass is the most commonly eaten plant by canines, so don’t be surprised if your new puppy munches on grass over leaves, flowers, or other plants.

Does your corgi mow the lawn for you?

You’ll also want to make sure that your corgi doesn’t eat too much grass. This can lead to digestion problems, excess vomiting, or stomach pain. And also ask yourself:

Is he eating grass in RESPONSE to something? Or is he eating it for no reason?

If there’s a trigger prior, you’ll find out what’s making him eat it.

This could be the reason why he’s trying to make himself vomit and get rid of whatever’s comfortable to him. Dogs can’t talk, but their behavior says everything.

Note that although your corgi may appear to be eating a lot of grass, he may be letting most of it fall out of his mouth.

He could be just chewing on it and spitting it out. Only a few pieces are actually swallowed. Puppies tend to do this and will do it less as they age.

By 7-9 months, you’ll probably notice that your corgi ignores the grass entirely or just quickly munches on it then walks away.

By age 1, your dog should rarely be eating it unless there are other circumstances. Note that there are ALWAYS exceptions.

Some dogs will make eating it a habit.

As long as they’re healthy after a vet checkup, there’s nothing to worry about if the consumption amount doesn’t change.

How to stop my corgi from eating grass?

The behavior is normal, but to an extent.

Here are some ways you can help stop your dog from the behavior.

Use the “no” command

Most corgis puppies will stop over time, but you can accelerate the process by teaching him to stay away from the grass with a stern “no” command.

Reward your dog for listening and use positive reinforcement.

Teach “leave it”

Additionally, you can train your corgi the “leave it” or “drop it” commands to deal with grass.

Start training during the critical learning period of your corgi puppy to train him early.

This will be helpful on walks outdoors so you don’t need to constantly pull the grass out of his mouth.

Can’t train your dog? Don’t have time?

The next best alternative is to simply remove the grass. If you have a small patch, you can consider removing it entirely or building a barrier so your puppy doesn’t mess with it.

Also, if he eats it outside on potty breaks, a barrier will help reduce the number of distractions and make housebreaking easier.

Use a tight leash

And finally, if you can’t block the grass and can’t cut it or remove it, keep him on a tight leash when you go outside.

This can work for both your backyard or on walks. Teach your corgi to walk on heels. This will benefit them to stay by your side in public and prevent unwanted behaviors (like lunging at strangers or running amok).

My corgi is throwing up the grass he eats

About 25% of dogs will throw up after eating grass. The more they eat, the higher chance they have of vomiting based on various reports online.

Most dogs can swallow and push the grass through their digestive tract without any problems.

But if your corgi constantly throws up every time, there could be other concerns at stake. This ranges from the previous foods he’s eaten, missing nutrients, worms or parasites, or a poor nutrient balance.

He could be eating the grass to make up for missing fiber, but throwing up because he’s eating too much or sensitive to it.

Or he may have eaten something earlier that resulted in stomach problems and trying to relieve himself.

Regardless, you should consult a vet for a checkup if your dog constantly throws up.

Can dogs digest grass?

Dogs don’t digest grass.

Grass doesn’t digest in dogs because they don’t have the required enzymes to break down the strong fibers in the plant.

This is why it can be a tool for them to use on themselves to induce vomiting (and probably where the tale came from).

Because they don’t have the means to break down the enzymes to digest it properly, it goes through their entire digestive tract as insoluble fiber.

Some fiber content is healthy to keep your dog’s digestion moving smoothly. Bugt overdoing it can lead to pain or constipation in your corgi.

This is why you need to monitor how much your puppy eats and don’t let him consume copious amounts of foliage.

Is eating grass healthy?

Yes, it’s normal.

As long as your dog eats controlled amounts, there’s no need to worry.

Grass can help regulate and clean out your dog’s digestive tract by providing some fiber. But if your dog eats grass to vomit because of something else he ate, this is a problem that you should assess.

Dogs will eat it on their own, even if they’re stray ones. So it’s clearly part of their natural instinct. Consuming grass in moderation should pose no risks.

You should always be asking yourself if your corgi is eating it for a reason OR because it’s just instinct.

When you suspect that there may be a trigger that’s causing him issues, that’s when you need to take him to the vet.

Is it safe or dangerous?

Generally, if your corgi eats grass, it’s healthy.

There are many reasons why your dog may be attracted to munching down on a lawn:

Getting a source of fiber

Replacing a missing nutrient

Fixing his digestive tract

Help get his daily intake of essentials

Ridding parasites

The grass provides a chewable plant (chew toy)

Or simply out of boredom

Again, don’t be alarmed if your dog rushes outside just to lay down on the lawn to chew grass (rather than that false bathroom alarm).

But be cautious of any triggers or dietary problems that may exist that’s causing him to eat it. Your dog may even bring in a few pieces indoors as a chew toy.

Some owners will tell their corgi to stop eating it by using a “no” command. You can practice this if you want to wean your dog off of it.

This can help expedite the natural process of stopping them.

When to see a vet

When you notice changes in behavior or diet, schedule a visit.

Take your corgi to the vet for an exam when you first notice a change in behavior, weight, or diet.

There are some things you should lookout for from your corgi though.

Grass in stool

You should take your dog to the vet for a checkup if you notice any difficulty in pooping because of the fibers in the grass (it’s insoluble to dogs).

If your corgi has difficulty passing stool, this needs to be checked out. Seeing grass in the poop is normal- after all, they can’t digest it.

But if it’s so much that it makes your dog strain or take extended bathroom breaks, this could be worthy of a vet visit.

Consistent vomiting

If your corgi vomits every time after eating grass, you’ll want to address the issue.

Is he eating something prior that’s making his stomach hurt, and now he’s trying to get rid of the pain?

Did you recently change his diet, exercise regimen, or sleep patterns?

Does he need more fiber from grass but eats too much and regurgitates it?

You’ll want to document everything (feeding, bathroom breaks, sleep/wake cycles, etc.) and bring this information to your vet. From there, the pet doctor can examine the issue and recommend a plan of action.

If accompanied by any other signs of distress

If your dog eats grass accompanied by fatigue, diarrhea, whining, barking, no appetite, weight changes, shaking or tremors, or other abnormal behaviors, consult your vet.

The consumption of grass could just be a reaction to something else that’s affecting your dog. This warrants a vet exam.

Changes in behavior or lifestyle

If your corgi seems to be munching on grass blades out of nowhere (and suddenly), this could be due to a change in diet, lifestyle, hormones, or some other nutrient deficiency.

Consider if there were any recent changes to your dog’s lifestyle that could attribute to the new behavior.

So now that you’re armed with more knowledge, you probably know some of the reasons behind this behavior.

Hopefully, it calmed your nerves just a bit and relieves some worry over your furbaby.

Corgis will eat grass- that’s normal. Just be on the lookout for specific triggers and any reactions to it.

A few grass blades here and there is nothing to worry about. Anything else? Take your pup to the vet!

Thinking about getting a corgi as a guard dog? Here's what you should know.

Wondering if corgis make good guard dogs? Trying to secure your home or yard from strangers?

We’ll discuss these topics:

Their perks that make them excellent guard dogs

Why they have protective natures

How they can help protect your home and family

And more

Sound good? Let’s see if a corgi can hold down the fort.

Note: Every corgi has its own disposition. There’s no guarantee that a corgi will protect, defend, or guard when necessary. These are generalized statements and do not apply to every individual dog. Use your own best judgment.

Corgis are well rounded for protecting the home

These dogs make excellent guard dogs for protecting your property from strangers and potential intruders.

They have perky, alert ears with an astute sense of hearing. They can hear the faintest sounds you’ll never pick up on- even when they’re sleeping.

Corgis also aren’t afraid to bark at people, animals, and even other dogs bigger than them.

They suffer from “small dog syndrome” which works out in your favor for a guard dog. They simply don’t care about the size of the threat- they’ll bark all night.

Their small size lets them squeeze between cracks and under furniture, so they can reach even the most blocked off sections of your home.

And they’re not afraid to check it out if they see something suspicious. Despite their wiener-dog bodies, they’re extremely fast and agile.

They can make a mad dash downstairs at night to see what’s going on.

Pair that with their smart disposition and you have a dog that’ll pick up weird sounds at night, check it out quickly, and bark at it even if it’s many times bigger than Fido.

Corgis are extremely vocal

Corgis are smart and vocal- a deadly combination to suspicious activity.

This is probably a negative trait for most homeowners as they don’t want their dog to be barking at every single little thing.

Corgis will bark at sounds, sights, and even scents they don’t recognize (to a lesser extent). Poorly socialized ones will even have a harder time being quiet and silencing themselves.

Because of this, corgis have a tendency to bark and aren’t afraid to use it.

While this is a drawback for most people, those that want a guard dog will be happy to hear that corgis are a decent choice for securing the household.

The breed’s history spans back to where they were used as a herding breed for sheep, cattle, and other animals.

This is why they’ve evolved those stubby feet and short stature so they can be fast and dodge attacks from animals.

This is also speculated to be the reason why their tails are docked as it poses a liability if it were to be stepped on by the herd.

Corgis were bred to communicate with their owners by barking. This would keep them alert to know what’s happening with the herd.

Corgis also used their bark to help control the herd.

Because of all these evolutions, the modern corgi is a loud and vocal dog.

Don’t be surprised about their bark volume- it’s loud even though they’re considered to be a small dog. And this can be a benefit to protecting your family and home from danger.

With their big, perky ears and alert disposition, they can hear the faintest sounds at night (and day) to protect your home.

They’re smart to recognize threats

Corgis are good family dogs and don’t tend to pick favorites.

They work well with multiple owners, but they do show some anxiety when everyone’s separated throughout the household.

Because they’re a herding breed and their desire to herd is strong, they’ll “herd” the family members into one room.

This is good because it means that corgis can be trained to recognize “safe” people in the house to a large capacity.

If you have family, roommates, or others that visit every now and then, your corgi can be trained to NOT bark at safe people.

Think of the possibilities:

Your sibling that visits once a year

The pest control agent that comes every 6 months

The dog sitter that comes by weekly

The mailman that may show up a few times a week

The college kid that comes back every weekend

Relatives that come randomly

All these people that aren’t here on a daily basis can be trained to be recognized by your corgi as “safe.”

Of course, bark-happy corgis may never actually learn to be quiet, even to regular people. And others may bark a few times before giving the person a sniff and recognizing that they’re safe.

What can a corgi guard?

Corgis can be astute to the point where no one can walk across your home without him barking.

Corgis have deep barks and growls when they’re fully grown up. They can help protect your home from intruders and warn you of activity in the night.

Here are some things a corgi may warn you about:

People approaching your home

People at the door

The doorbell

Someone leaving the house

Someone coming home

People in the yard

His own food bowl

Corgis are cattle dogs and rank well for protective traits.

They were trained to keep other cows out of his owner’s territory by barking, alongside regular herding duties.

You may see your corgi staring through the window or sitting down when he hears something going on.

Their sense of hearing will detect the quietest whispers in the night- even stuff that you can’t hear.

Over time, you can tell if the dog is just playfully barking or “serious alert” barking. This is different for each dog so you’ll learn with your own corgi.

He may bark, grunt, howl, or even let out a small whimper when he’s confused. Those are just some of the sounds corgis can make.

Corgis have small dog syndrome

Despite their size, they have the demeanor of a big dog.

Even though they have a small size, they act and play like big dogs. If you’ve ever taken a corgi out to the park who’s not used to other dogs, he’ll bark at dogs triple his size.

This is perfect watchdog material as hell bark at night time predators even if they look scary. They really don’t care about the size of the bad guy.

Your corgi may go nuts at someone you’d never want to stare in the eye.

Are corgis protective?

Corgis are generally protective dogs who will stay loyal to the few people in Fido’s life that he cherishes.

Suppose strangers get into the home that the corgi doesn’t recognize- even socialized dogs can easily recognize suspicious behavior when it happens.

Think about it: If they can pick up body language cues from their owners, they can definitely see when a bad person wants to do “bad” stuff.

They’re extremely aware of their surroundings and can detect when something’s awry. They’ll bark at unusual sounds, sights, and people.

This makes them a good choice for a family watchdog to protect the people you care about and the house.

Are corgis friendly even as a guard dog?

Corgis can be extremely friendly even though they’re protective.

Yes, corgis are known to be family-friendly dogs and do well with adults.

Children can also be familiarized with this breed but only when proper boundaries are enacted.

These dogs can be rough and may learn bad behaviors when kids play with them.

So it’s important to establish proper socialization and teach your kids the right way to play with your corgi.

Note that corgis will nip at the heels to “herd” children, so this behavior should be controlled early on or else the dog will pick up biting and nipping problems.

To adults, corgis make excellent family dogs even with their protective nature.

There’s no reason why they have to be “mean” and defensive but can’t be affectionate.

What can corgis protect?

Corgis can safeguard your home, apartment, yard, and even your farm.

No matter where or what you live in, you should be able to train your dog to protect and defend your property.

Over time, corgis will easily pick up on his own “turf” and defend it from strangers. Dogs can recognize their own territory, even if it spans a wide distance.

Don’t be afraid to adopt or buy a corgi as a guard dog for your multiple acre farm. You could even train it to help you herd your cattle like the breed’s olden days.

Socialization matters

A well-socialized corgi. Just look at the pose.

Note that even though corgis, by nature, are vocal dogs that bark at thin air, they may not end up barking at strangers to guard your home.

Each corgi has a different personality and how the dog was raised makes a huge difference. If you socialized your corgi the right way, they may be alert and friendly to strangers, rather than barking at them.

This can be a drawback to those who want a dog that barks at everyone.

But then again, you probably wouldn’t be training your corgi to NOT bark, so that’s a moot point.

Even the loudest dogs can be trained to be quiet. It’s usually harder going the other way around- shy and quiet corgis will have a hard time barking on command and guarding the home.

Again, every situation is different.

Every corgi is different. If you want a generalized statement, then yes, most corgis can be potentially made into a decent guard dog.

That’s as “general” as you can be.

Now you know some of the reasoning behind why these dogs make excellent watchdogs to protect your home.

Always remember that every corgi is unique and there are always exceptions. Some are naturally good at protecting you and your home from intruders.

Others are more shy and reserved, which make them less prone to fulfill the watchdog role.

But even the shyest corgis may end up barking at strangers when it really comes down to it.

How the dog was socialized also matters a ton to the dog, so there’s that.

So, you want to know if corgis like water and swimming.

Or you want to MAKE your corgi like water.

In this article, we’ll cover:

The breed history in regards to water

How to socialize your corgi to not be afraid of water

What to do if your corgi is scared of swimming

And more

Sound good? Let’s “dive” in.

Are corgis good swimmers?

Corgis are similar to most other herding breeds.

They may or may not like water depending on how they were socliazed during the first 6 months of their puppyhood.

By nature, their short stature and legs aren’t necessarily made for paddling waves on the ocean.

They do have double-coats as many other herding dogs do. This allows them to adapt to colder temperatures to continue herding- whether in the rain or snow.

But even then, they have short and powerful things that can help them doggy paddle their way across the water.

Corgis were bred for herding animals on land, not the sea, ocean, river, lake, or pond.

So that means they weren’t really used for water sports.

But that doesn’t mean you can’t enjoy watching your corgi paddling across the water.

Or watch your corgi carry another corgi floating on a corgi float, like this:

Can corgis swim?

Almost every species of dog can swim to some extent.

Corgis are no exception. If you drop your dog in a baby pool, it’ll probably swim across with no problem, whether he enjoys doing the splish splash or not!

My corgi is afraid of getting wet and hates water

Most dogs will avoid any source of water, except for their own water bowl.

The important part is to slowly and gradually allow your corgi to get used to water.

Pairing swimming with positive reinforcement will help him learn to associate water with good times.

Sadly, most dogs absolutely hate getting wet.

So unless your corgi naturally likes water, he’ll probably grow up to avoid it.

This is why you need to socialize your corgi early on.

Here’s the problem.

Before exposing their dogs to water slowly and one step at a time, new owners will just dunk their dog into the bath and make it a traumatic experience.

This is completely wrong and just frightens the dog. And this is why so many dogs end up hating bathtime.

People are compelled to wash their dogs after they bring them home for the first night. Or after they go outside. Or they’re just not used to paw prints all over their home so they excessively shower their dog (which strips the natural oils of the skin).

The trick is to FIRST expose the dog to water and gradually work your work up to a full shower.

NOT spray and hose down your corgi. Or just dunk him right into a bathtub.

This is why most dogs hate water and getting wet. It’s because of the initial exposure to it. And this is why you need to properly show your dog that bathtime and water lead to rewards.

Sadly, most newbie owners won’t read this advice before they blast their dog with the hose.

And then they learn after the corgi is out of the critical period and hard to fix bad behaviors.

Socialize and expose your dog to water

Exposing him to water and pairing it with good rewards makes him enjoy the process.

In the future, he’ll associate that water means to treat or praise, which corgis will strive for.

The key is to take it one step at a time and slowly raise your expectations.

Do NOT spray your dog with water or put him into a tub.

Use baby steps even if he can’t get a full shower at first.

And constantly reward and praise him during the ENTIRE process.

Should your dog ever start to hate water and struggle, go back one step and expect less.

This will take time.

You won’t be able to do this overnight for sure. Unless you have a corgi that’s already been socialized by a good breeder. Or a wondercorgi.

Even though this breed doesn’t always try to please their owners because of their strong independent and stubborn nature, they still can be trained to enjoy swimming.

How to get your corgi to like water

Corgis can be trained to like water.

Here’s how you should approach getting your corgi to like water and swimming:

Expose him to water as young as possible. Ideally, this should be done in the socialization period (between 12-16 weeks).

At the beginning, just get some water on your fingers and let him lick it off.

Constantly reward your dog with treats during this part. Repeat on a daily basis and slowly increase the volume of water.

If you’re using a hose, faucet, sink, or something that has a control mechanism for the water flow, slowly make it louder and increase the flow over time.

After your corgi is used to the water, start petting him with a wet hand.

Again, reward with treats. If your dog struggles or tries to run away, lower your standards and go back to the previous step. You can try distracting him with some food while petting.

The next step is to get your corgi to walk into water. Form a puddle outside and reward your dog for walking into it.

Pet him in the puddle. Give him treats. Continually make it a positive experience.

After he’s comfortable with walking into water by himself, you can try placing him into water.

You may have already done this a few times by giving him a bath. If you didn’t use treats or positive reinforcement, he may already have a few phobias.

You’ll have to break this and dissociate the water with negative experiences as much as you can.

You can start with placing just his limbs into an inch or so of water. Reward and praise him throughout the process.

When he’s comfortable, you can slowly increase the amount of water. Using a sink, bathtub, or kiddie pool are all excellent.

A small pool works perfectly. You can go with your corgi into the water and swim with him.

Practice having him swim towards you, fetching small floating toys, and moving around the water.

Praise him with treats and positive association.

This is just a sample water socialization plan.

Not all corgis will like to swim or get wet

This is normal behavior.

There are many different ways to do this.

NOT all corgis will respond positively, nor can all dogs be trained to like water. If your corgi hates it and can’t move to the next step, he may just be a dog that doesn’t like water.

Similar to how humans definitely have their own personality, your dog has his own.

He may just never like water or swimming. And that’s okay.

Unless you’re competing in a dog sport, there’s no need to force your corgi to swim.

You may be able to convert him to enjoying a dive in the pool with repeated exposure.

And if you just can’t get him to budge, consider hiring a professional dog trainer. They may be able to help get your corgi to swim.

Does your corgi love water yet?

<img decoding="async" width="1024" height="685" src="https://corgiadoption.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/06/do-corgis-like-swimming-1024x685.jpg" alt="Corgis can be trained to swim and enjoy water." class="wp-image-1181" title="Do Corgis Like Water? Not all dogs will like water.

Not all dogs can be trained to enjoy swimming. If your corgi is struggling, take it easy, and lower your standards.

Keep it light and playful. Reward with treats and praise.

Don’t ever force your dog to swim- this just does the complete opposite of what you’re trying to accomplish.

Does your corgi poop nonstop and constantly? Find out why he does this and what you can do to get him on a regular schedule.

So, your little puppy is pooping nonstop. And you’re seriously wondering why.

You’re probably asking yourself:

Am I feeding too much food?

Is he sick?

Or are corgis supposed to poop constantly (like every 25 minutes?)

Wondering what’s going on? Why does the furball constantly need to be taken out?

In this article, we’ll talk about these topics:

The number of times (and how often) your corgi should poop

What influences how often your corgi poops

How to control or adjust the pooping schedule

And more

Sound good? Let’s get this dirty business taken care of.

Why does my corgi poop so often?

There could be a multitude of reasons why your corgi constantly needs to go outside (or on his pee pad).

Based on input from online corgi owners, the average corgi will poop about 3-4 times in a 24 hour period.

Your corgi may need to poop more or less depending on a variety of different factors.

Some corgis like to do it all at once. Others will poop just a little bit and then hold it. And then continue again later.

So you may just see smaller feces come out of your dog.

For example, you may take a morning job with your corgi and he’ll only go 2 times.

But then they may go out at odd times (after feeding, a nap, or playing) and go again. This can total up to 6+ times a day while other corgis may only go twice a day.

Or you may take your dog out and he’ll go poop. Then come back and need to go again in 20 minutes. Then again after 5 mins on a walk. Maybe even twice on that same walk.

That’s completely normal. Corgis have small bodies and they have extra room for all their digested food because of their elongated, dachshund-like bodies.

So this lets them hold a lot of poop until they need to go. That’s why it’s hard to completely “empty” a corgi!

All of these variables can determine and change your corgi’s necessity to relieve himself:

How often you feed

At what times you feed

How much you feed

How often you take walks

How often you play with the dog

A daily routine

The age of your corgi

Possible parasites, worms, or a disease

All of these factors influence how often your corgi needs to poop.

Note that it can be just a single variable, such as exercising your corgi more during the summer (burning more calories) and less during the winter (fewer calories consumed).

Thus, your corgi will eat a lot more food during the period of exercise compared to being sedentary. And this will directly affect how often your corgi poops.

Something as simple as that canmake all the difference.

That’s why you need to ask yourself about any recent changes to your corgi’s routine (food consumed, hours slept, etc.).

(You should be keeping track of all these anyway- your vet will thank you.)

How to control or limit corgi pooping

You can control the poop.

Believe it or not, you’re nearly in complete control over your corgis pooping schedule.

You control the food source, how often he goes out, and how often he gets fed.

So if you’re tired of taking him out every hour or in the middle of the night, there are things you can do to change that habit.

Of course, things like how much he defecates outside aren’t controllable. But other variables are definitely adjustable by you.

There are some things you can fully adjust to limit how often your dog needs to do his business.

Stop feeding before bedtime

Don’t feed a few hours before sleeping.

A neat trick is to simply stop feeding him late-night dinners.

Don’t feed him 3-4 hours before bed. This will make him less prone to poop in the middle of the night- but only if you have him go outside before he goes to sleep.

A typical puppy will take anywhere from 2-4 hours between “poop intervals.” so if you stop feeding at 6PM and he goes to bed at 10PM, then he’ll relieve himself before bed.

This may help stop him from waking up at 2-3AM to go again.

You need to play around with these numbers to see what works for you. Every corgi is different.

Check how much you’re feeding

Corgi poop can be controlled and managed by regular feeding.

If you’re overfeeding, which many new dog owners will do, he’ll need to go more often. Be sure you’re feeding the right amounts of dog food.

Read the feeding chart on your pack of dog food. Every bag should have one, unless you’re using a shady unknown brand (to which you should promptly replace with a reputable brand).

Feed according to the chart and based on the number of calories your dog needs to maintain his baseline caloric metabolism.

Then add more food based on how much exercise he gets, how often he’s awake, and how often you already feed him.

You can use this calculator to check his baseline amount. This is the minimum you should be feeding him based on calories.

Puppies should be fed 3-4 times a day and it should taper down to just 1-2 meals a day as an adult.

When he reaches full size, do NOT overfeed by keeping the same amount you fed him as a puppy. Puppies eat more food than adults. Not the other way around.

Overfeeding will lead to dog obesity, which 56% of dogs currently suffer from. Don’t make your corgi sick without knowing it and making him suffer.

Feeding table scraps should be discouraged and only done for training rewards or as a supplement to their regular staple kibble.

But then again, resisting those puppy eyes begging for human food is hard.

(FYI: There are ways to feed table scraps without having him learn to beg for it!).

Regardless, you should be tracking human food added to his diet.

Newbie dog owners will feed huge portions to their dog, which is bad for many reasons:

It leads to overfeeding

Your dog will beg

Your dog will learn to dislike his regular kibble (which should be nutritionally balanced)

Human food poses the risk of being toxic to your corgi (caffeine, nuts, etc.)

Unless you’ve spend countless hours building the perfect diet that satisfies all the nutritional needs of a dog, you should leave that to the professionals (reputable dog food makers)

No dog food is perfect. But their guaranteed analysis of necessary nutrients (protein, calcium, etc.) is often following strict guidelines by the AAFCO.

This is much safer for the typical corgi owner who has no idea of what nutrients corgis need.

Supplementing with human food messes up this balance and can lead to overweight corgis, excess nutrients, and other diseases which can be avoided easily.

Establish a routine for everything

Dogs are creatures of habit and being completely random on a daily basis may make basic house training more difficult.

Once you have a routine setup, you’ll find that it’s much easier to keep track of when your corgi needs to pee or poop and how often he needs to go.

A routine means literally everything:

Feeding

Playing

Taking him outside

Mandatory naps

Training

Waking up and sleeping

Keep everything at the same time every day as much as you can.

This makes your dog get used to a flow of activities. And it makes it easier for you to predict when he’ll need to poop and pee (and when).

For most people who have typical jobs (9-5), you can establish a morning walk and feeding session. Then go to work.

After you come back, you can continue with another walk, feeding session, playing/training, and settle down for the night.

It’s not always easy especially for busy individuals. You can consider having a friend, relative, or dog sitter help you out with the burden.

After all, this should be something that you consider before adopting or getting a corgi, as corgi’s aren’t dogs that can be left alone at home.

This may lead to unwanted bad behaviors like separation anxiety, biting and chewing everything, barking and poor socialization.

It’s always sad to see another corgi given up and surrendered by their unsuspecting owner who had no idea they were so much work.

Or for those who quickly search “popular dog breeds” or “smartest dog breeds” and decide on giving a corgi to someone.

That’s one of the points of this site- to help educate people on all the corgi care requirements and what to know before they get one! If this is you and you feel overwhelmed, you’re not alone.

Make sure he plays and exercises frequently

A sleepy corgi after a long day out.

Corgis are born to move.

Not only is proper exercise required for a healthy corgi, but it also helps them get their poop flowing (sorry).

The vibrations, excitement, and just being both mentally and physically stimulated at the same time seems to work magic on these dogs. It makes them have to use the bathroom shortly after, especially if they’re still a puppy.

Make sure you get in the daily exercise amounts daily and expect your dog to have to go poop shortly after.

This is one way you can control how often he poops and helps empty his stomach. In other words, you’re giving him a little “push.”

Have a set amount of time each day to play or exercise your dog.

Time how long it takes to usekes to go poop afterwards. Combined with a routine diet, feeding time, and feeding amounts, you’ll be able to easily predict when he’ll need to go again.

The running around will help facilitate his next defecation.

You can do anything from playing Tug of War, running, tag, fetch, and even just frisbee to keep him mobile.

You’ll soon see that you can “make” him go poop after a serious play session! Use this to your benefit and control your corgi’s pooping regimen and schedule.

Avoid free-feeding

When your corgi’s just a puppy, you’ll want to feed 3-4 times a day at equal intervals at the same exact time.

For example, you could feed at 8AM, 12PM, 4PM, and 8PM.

Measure out the proper amount of food for your corgi before the first meal.

Then place the dog bowl down and let him eat for 30 minutes.

After that, remove the bowl until the next feeding session. Adjust as necessary based on caloric energy and your dog’s age.

There’s a lot of debate between feeding on a schedule vs. free feeding.

Free feeding is where you just leave access to food 24/7 (fill up the bowl and leave it there).

Whereas feeding on a schedule is using measured amounts and feeding throughout the day at equally spaced time periods.

Personally, I think feeding at scheduled intervals beats free feeding for multiple reasons:

When you feed on a schedule, your puppy’s next poop session becomes very predictable.

Feeding on a schedule helps build food motivation, which is necessary for training, obedience, and other food-based interactions.

It keeps your corgi fixed to a routine, and dogs are creatures of habit

Routines make training and housebreaking a LOT easier because you can tell when your corgi needs to poop

You can use kibble or the staple food as a reward, which means less treats (which should only be 10% of the diet)

It helps build appetite for picky dogs (he’ll eat the kibble if he’s starving plus not being able to eat it at anytime)

Think about it: you’re rewarding your corgi following commands by using his FOOD rather than treats.

This is healthier for the dog, as treats are just treats. Kibble should be 90% of his food source. and you spend less cashon treats since one bag goes a long way.

This is why I always recommend feeding on a regular schedule over free feeding, especially when your corgi is just a puppy. It builds positive habits early.

How long can my corgi hold his poop?

If your corgi is still a puppy, there’s not much you can do to “extend” the amount of time he can hold it.

Waking up once or twice a night to let him go outside is a normal thing and part of puppyhood. They don’t call it puppy blues for nothing.

The rule of thumb is that they can only hold it for their age in months + 1.

So a 3 month old corgi can hold it for 4 hours.

And a 4 month old corgi can hold it for 5 hours.

Get it? Good.

As your corgi grows up to the rebellious teen phase, they’ll slowly be able to make it through the night without having to wake you up.

Your corgi should go as often as needed, on a healthy schedule.

This is why it’s important to always feed your dog on a routine schedule. This means the same amount of food, at the same time, every single day.

Wondering why your corgi keeps sneezing? Or reverse sneezing? Does it freak you out? Here's what you shou

So, your corgi keeps sneezing. And it’s freaking you out!

He sneezes when he eats.

He sneezes when he sniffs the carpet.

Sometimes he sneezes twice (or six) times in a row!

In this article, we’ll talk about:

Possible triggers making your corgi sneeze

Sneezing vs. reverse sneezing

How to stop the sneezing

When to see your vet about this problem

And more

Sound good? Let’s see if we can find out why he’s sneezing.

Why does my corgi sneeze?

There are many reasons why your corgi may sneeze.

Keep in mind that there’s a distinct difference between a sneeze and a reverse sneeze and that they’re two different things.

First, let’s talk about sneezing.

Sneezing in dogs is just as normal as sneezing in humans.

Dogs and humans sneeze for the same reasons.

Well, a lot of them are similar and due to the same triggers.

Know what’s “normal”

You should always start at the vet.

Get an exam and ask questions. Tell them everything you remember in detail.

Your vet will tell you what’s going on with your corgi. If your vet says that the sneezing’s nothing to worry about, then you can consider this to be “normal” behavior.

Then, continue to note the sneezing episodes and mark what’s normal.

When you notice something different, that’s when you’ll schedule another vet exam and see what’s wrong.

And repeat.

This helps you recognize the differences between “harmless sneezes” or “dangerous sneezes.”

Plus, your notes will help your vet determine the cause of the sneezing with more accuracy.

You’ll know when to take your dog to the vet because if it starts showing signs of abnormal sneezing, you know something’s up.

Reverse sneezing

Your corgi may reverse sneeze and catch you off guard.

This is best described as “choking” or “suffocating.”

Your dog will start making quick “gag” reflexes and it can be quite alarming to the untrained owner.

Here’s a video of reverse sneezing so you can get a clear video of how it looks like:

And here’s another one showing the “choking” motion on repeat:

Reverse sneezing is also known as paroxysmal respiration. It’s not a real sneeze, but rather a reflex in dogs.

It occurs when their soft palate and throat become disturbed and the dog forces the air to remove it.

It’s just like a sneeze where the purpose of it is to expel air to remove some kind of particle or reaction.

A reverse sneeze simply is where the corgi takes in air to do the same thing.

Although reverse sneezing can be alarming, it’s usually harmless and nothing to worry about.

Allergies can also cause reverse sneezing along with some kind of irritant. If your corgi’s mouth, throat, or palate has an annoyance, you can expect a sneeze!

Reverse sneezes only last a few seconds, but may occur in episodes of many sneezes in a row.

Your corgi will sit there like he’s choking and stand in place.

He’ll then stick his head out and you’ll notice that the corners of his lips will be retracted.

During a reverse sneeze, your corgi will have his mouth shut, in sitting position, and a long neck.

He’ll then start a session of deep and fast, spasmodic inhalations.

He may appear to be choking, vomiting, or even having a seizure.

A pattern of rhythmic gags will take place as he sneezes.

This will last a few minutes in the series.

Once your corgi’s sneeze session is over, he’ll continue his normal activities.

What causes sneezing?

Sneezing and reverse sneezing are both caused by many of the same triggers.

The majority of cases are because of some kind of pollutant caught in your corgi’s airways.

This then forces him to involuntarily clear it out by sneezing or reverse sneezing.

Allergies and environmental triggers

Similar to regular sneezing in dogs, your corgi may reverse sneeze due to a variety of triggers.

The most common reactions come from things like:

Dust

Perfumes

Household chemicals

Bugs

Mites

Spiders

Hair (or dander)

Food

Plant matter

Foxtail burrs

Flea bites

Viruses and bacteria

A piece of grass stuck in the noise

Your dog may also have post nasal drip or a nasal problem.

Brachy breeds and smaller dogs are both prone to reverse sneezing.

Note that foxtail burrs are considered dangerous for dogs as they can get stuck in their nose, eyes, and mouth.

This is NOT something to ignore.

You need to take your dog to an emergency vet if you suspect that your dog’s having a reaction to foxtail.

If he’s sticking his nose around the home, especially corgi puppies, he may pick up something you missed.

Dogs can’t use paws to clear their nose, so their only way to clear whatever is up their nose.

So they need to sneeze. Constantly. Until it’s cleared and removed.

Allergies can be controlled using vaccinations. If your dog has other accompanying symptoms like runny eyes, wet nose, or feet licking/chewing, this can be an allergy at play.

Human activity

Playing, feeding, or even petting your corgi can make him sneeze.

Human activity also may trigger reverse sneezing. If your corgi’s on a leash and you pull at the right time, you can make your corgi sneeze.

Or if you get your dog overly excited, he may be triggered also.

Sneezing has also been reported when they drink, exercise, or eat.

Your corgi may even sneeze to get your attention or when he’s happy.

After being fed a nice meal, the sneezing may also be a followup “thank you” to their owner.

He’ll eat, rub his nose on the carpet, lie on their back, and then get back up and SNEEZE.

You may also notice this during play sessions or physical exercises.

If the sneezes only happen during this time and you can repeat the trigger consistently, you probably have nothing to worry about.

But you should get your vet to check it out anyway just to be sure.

A play sneeze rarely is something to worry about. It’s a communication signal and dogs show this to their playmate just to get some energy out.

Unlike humans, sneezes are a communication tool by dogs.

Diseases

Disease and viruses like kennel cough may cause constant sneezing.

This is a dangerous disease that requires immediate vet attention.

Being unable to determine the source of the triggers warrants a visit to the vet who can determine the next steps to correct it.

Tracheal collapse

This is a serious condition that affects smaller breeds.

If your corgi starts making “honking” sounds or seems like he can’t breathe, take him to an emergency vet.

This is not something that can wait and requires professional attention.

You’ll have to recognize the difference between “regular” episodes of sneezing/reverse sneezing and when you notice something’s amiss.

That’s why it’s critical to know the “usual” episodes your dog has, as mentioned earlier.

How to stop reverse sneezing

Even though the sneezing sessions may seem disturbing, the act is usually safe and nothing to worry about.

Some dog owners have reported that you can help stop the sneezing by doing the following.

Depress the tongue

If the reverse sneezing doesn’t end, you may be able to press down on your corgi’s tongue to stop the sneezing. If the episode continues much longer than usual, pressing on the tongue may end the session.

This forces the mouth to open and move air through your dog’s system.

Do NOT attempt this if you don’t know what you’re doing.

Get your dog to the vet if the sneezing gets worse or doesn’t stop.

Take your dog to a non-polluted area

Some corgis may have allergic reactions to pollens, dust, smoke, or other triggers and stimuli in the air.

You can move your corgi to an area with clean air to stop and cut off the trigger, which may help stop the episode.

Depending on where you are, you’ll have to move your dog either inside the home or outside the home.

Find out what the dog is reacting to and get the dog out of the area.

Massage the throat

You may be able to gently clear the dog’s reflexes by rubbing the throat.

Use circular, rubbing motions to help dislodge the throat and mouth.

Force your dog to swallow

Covering the dog’s nose forces him to swallow.

This may help clear the irritant if it’s in the throat, tongue, or mouth. You should not attempt this if you don’t know what you’re doing.

Blowing in their face

You can try lightly blowing in your dog’s face.

This may help them swallow which will stop the reverse sneezing.

You should ALWAYS consult your vet when you’re in doubt or unsure about your dog’s well being.

Constant sneezing that’s nonstop can be a dangerous condition or allergic reaction that can suppress the dog’s normal breathing patterns.

When to see the vet

<img decoding="async" width="1024" height="683" src="https://corgiadoption.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/05/corgi-sneezing-1-1024x683.jpg" alt="A corgi on the field with allergies." class="wp-image-1121" title="Why Does My Corgi Keep Sneezing?
If your corgi constantly has episodes of sneezing and you just can’t find out what’s triggering them, it’s time to bring Fido to the vet.

Any of these symptoms are worth a visit:

Unknown triggers that cause sneezing

Frequent reverse sneezing episodes

Sneezing that lasts longer than usual episodes

Honking sounds

Unable to breath

Failure to recover after an episode

Extreme fatigue

Failure to exercise

Blue or black gums

Other symptoms that occur along with the sneezing (bloated face, change in diet, weight loss, strange gagging or spams, etc.)

Your vet can determine the source of the trigger- whether it’s dust, pollen, or some other allergy.

The professional may also check out your corgi’s nose and conduct a rhinoscopy to see what’s going on.

This can help you eliminate or reduce the sneezing episodes in the future to let Fido sneeze less.

Your corgi may be put on allergy meds, get a shot, or antihistamines if there’s some allergy at play.

Wondering why your corgi shakes and shivers? Here are the possible reasons why and what you can do to help him.

So, you’re wondering why your corgi shakes and quivers.

Maybe even nonstop!

In this post, we’ll cover these topics:

The reason behind shaking

Why your corgi shakes

Possible triggers causing him to tremble

When to see a vet

And more

Sound good? Let’s examine your corgi.

What is wrong when your dog is shaking?

Perhaps not this kind of shaking.

There are a few reasons why your corgi may shake or tremble.

Some of the reasons aren’t that serious, but others qualify for a visit to the vet for an office visit.

Here are some common reasons why your corgi may be shaking.

Your corgi is cold

Being cold is one of the most common reasons why your dog may shake in his boots (well, dog booties).

Cold weather or sudden temperature drops may trigger your dog to start shaking to generate heat. This is called shivering. And I know you know that.

Shivering burns calories by doing micro exercises within the muscles.

This helps produce heat and makes your corgi warm up. If your corgi is in a cold area or it’s a cold day or night, he may shiver. This is normal if the cold temperatures are temporary.

But if your dog is ill or has a condition, you should consider keeping him warm by using clothing.

Or just wrapping him in a doggy blanket.

However, if you’re in a cold environment (other states, AC on, or just the frozen food aisle at the store), shivering is expected and should pose no danger to healthy dogs.

Some dogs have dual coats (like corgis) which let them handle cold temperatures easily.

But dogs with single coats will be much more difficult to keep warm and you should be careful.

He’s nervous or scared

Dogs that have been conditioned to a negative experience may start to shiver or tremble when they expect something negative to happen.

Things like going to the vet, getting a bath, or even vacuuming can make your dog start to tremble.

Loud noises like fireworks, pots and pans, and strangers may make your dog shiver in place.

Your dog may also start to shake when he’s exposed to new environments he’s not used to (airports, being around new people, being in someone else’s house, etc.)

Proper association may help make your corgi accustomed to new environments.

Remember that all types of stimuli may make him scared- sounds, sigts, scents, and touch.

This is expected and should be nothing surprising.

But if your dog starts panicking, consider giving him treats to make him calm down and associate the experience with a positive time.

But don’t appease to your dog- if you try to calm him down each time he’s scared, he’ll never learn. This may also build separation anxiety.

He has a fever

If your corgi has a fever, this is in response to bacterial problems or poisoning.

Fever can be a symptom of sickness or recent medications or vaccinations.

You may also find the high temperatures paired with vomiting, diarrhea, lethargy, hot ears and nose, or even sneezing/coughing/reverse sneezing. It’s important to get your dog checked out by the vet if you’re not expecting any of these symptoms.

Constant shaking could be a sign of high body temperatures, which signals that there are other problems.

Your dog should have a temperature of 39.2C (102.5F) at the high end. Anything higher may be a sign of illness in your corgi.

Your dog may be in pain

Your corgi may need a checkup.

If your dog is shaking, he may be suffering from pain.

Dogs are VERY good at hiding their pain, so don’t always expect your dog to cry or whine when he’s hurt. They’re good at sucking it up and moving on.

However, sometimes the pain is too much for them to bear and they may end up shaking. If you notice your corig’s rear legs are shaking, you may want to get him to the vet for an exam.

This could be a sign of a hip or joint problem.

Your corgi may be tired

This is especially true for corgi puppies. If your dog has been playing all day, he may start to tremble in place.

Puppies need multiple naps throughout the day. Their schedules are literally to eat, drink, potty, play, potty, sleep, repeat.

If your corgi hasn’t had the time to rest, he may start sitting around more often, shaking his legs, or start whining for no reason.

These are all signs that your corgi may be tired and needs to take a nap.

Bring him to his x-pen and let him sleep. You may find that he runs right into his dog bed.

He could have a disease

If your corgi trembles suddenly out of nowhere and it doesn’t stop after a day or two, there could be a disease that’s starting to surface.

Distemper

Trembling is a symptom of distemper.

You’ll want to pay attention to any other symptoms paired with the shaking and then schedule an appointment ASAP.

Tell your vet everything you’ve noticed, changes in weight, and changes in diet.

Distemper is caused by a canine virus that frequently happens to puppies and adolescent corgis that are still undergoing vaccination.

Tremors are a common symptom of distemper, along with eye or nose discharge, fever, coughing, or changes in diet.

This is a serious disease and your dog needs vet attention urgently.

Generalized tremor syndrome

Generalized tremor syndrome (GTS) is usually exhibited in dogs between 9 months and 24 months of age.

GTS can be treated with corticosteroids and commonly causes tremors due to steroid responses. It’s also called steroid responsive tremor syndrome or white shaker dog syndrome.

This is because it was first found in west highland terriers and maltese dogs.

But it can occur in corgis also.

He could be poisoned

Corgis shaking from food poisoning is common.

Dog poisoning may make your dog shiver and shake.

Depending on what he ate, this can make your corgi shake uncontrollably. If he ingested something that’s poisonous to corgis, then tremors may be a side effect of this.

Common foods like chocolate, xylitol, garlic, onions, tobacco, and avocado are toxic. He may also have eaten toxic chemicals like snail bait, rat poison, or roach tablets.

The symptoms will vary and often include depression, vomiting, diarrhea, drooling, confusion, seizures, weakness, and more.

You need to seek urgent care for your corgi or contact the Animal Poison Control Center.

Your corgi could be nauseous

A dizzy corgi may shake.

Nausea will cause your corgi to shake in place.

Similar to humans, dogs can become dizzy from motion sickness (car, plane, and boat rides). They can also get nauseous from eating the wrong foods or allergies.

Dog tremors may be a sign that he’s nauseous, especially when paired with listlessness, swallowing nonstop, drooling, yawning, omitting, throwing up, or disorientation, or hiding.

Get vet attention ASAP or call the animal poison control center.

He could be having a seizure

Corgis who have seizures due to epilepsy, which can affect dogs just like humans.

Flashing lights, repeated lights, strobe lights, and other sources of triggers can make your dog shake, collapse, twitch, faint, or drool.

He may also chew his tongue, chomp on nothing, or foam at the mouth.

They often will fall over and start trying to “run” or paddle on his side (like he’s having a dream).

Medications can often resolve seizures such as potassium bromide, keppra, or phenobarbital.

He just got a shower

If you bathe your dog, you’ll notice that he’ll start shaking during the bath and afterwards when you towel him up.

This could be because he’s scared, he hates baths, he’s cold, or he’s just drying off. This also applies when he’s wet from the rain, sprinklers, or any other sources of excess water.

When he gets wet, he’ll start shaking to stay warm and dry off. This will help him prevent hypothermia.

Simply shaking can dry up over 70% of water from their body!

Nervousness from the water can also make him tremble.

Being scared of water is normal for most dogs, and this can cause his legs to tremble.

There’s nothing to really do about this- it’s normal!

Your corgi’s excited

If your corgi’s expecting something positive to happen soon, he may start shaking uncontrollably.

He may even urinate a bit just to show how excited he really is.

This may happen before feeding, play time, training sessions, or even just seeing your face.

Your dog’s mirroring you

Some people say that dogs mirror their owners.

And this means that if you’re scared, nervous, shaking, or whatever else, your dog may pick up on this and do the same.

This is especially true for smarter dogs, and corgis are no exception.

Your dog’s stressed

Similar to becoming nervous, your dog may start shaking during periods of stress. Stress and anxiety usually go hand in hand.

So if your dog’s expecting a trip to the vet, fireworks, alarms, loud noises, or even just being put into his carrier, he may start shaking and trembling.

These stressors are stressful because your corgi has associated negative association with them.

You should repair the trauma by using treats, food, or just show your dog that only good things happen when the stimuli occurs.

Your dog may even start treling when he’s expecting to be punished for soiling the carpet, chewing the furniture, or eating your sandwich. Quivering should be no surprise.

Why do my corgis back legs shake?

The back leg shaking can be any combination of the above.

Your corgi may be tired, in need of a nap, scared, or excited. Look for other signals paired with the shaking to see if you can diagnose the reason behind it. If not, consult your vet.

Additionally, if your corgi has been workign his rear legs, they may be shaking due to strenous exercise (such as the “sit pretty” command).

It can also be a sign of aging or hip/join problems.

Again, check to see if the trembling comes with any other symptoms to determine if it’s worth an exam.

Did you find out why your corgi shakes?

Some shaking is normal.

Now you have some clues as to why Fido can’t stop quivering.

Depending on the stimuli and triggers that’s making him tremble, you’ll have to assess the situation and see. If it’s related to a disease, disorder, or persists, consult a vet.

However, if it’s something obvious (being in a cold place, seeing the vet, or maybe even being excited), you have nothing to worry about. False alarm.

Corgi puppy crying nonstop? Driving you nuts? Stop the corgi drama and find out why your corgi is crying. And what you can do to stop the whining.

So, your corgi puppy is crying and whining nonstop. And you need some methods to stop corgi crying.

(That actually work.)

Maybe he’s not even a puppy. Maybe he’s an adult that suddenly started crying by reverting to puppyhood.

Whatever the case, you want him to stop crying.

(Or should I say, NEED?)

You can’t bear the crying anymore.

You can’t sleep. (And you have work at 7AM the next day.)

You want to ignore it because everything you read online tells you to.

(Giving your dog attention is bad?)

But at the same time, your soft side gives in and you end up playing with your puppy at 3AM.

So what do you do?

(And will you ever sleep again?)

In this article, we’ll talk about:

A few reasons why your corgi puppy is crying

Different methods you can try at home to ease the whining

When to take him to the vet

And more

You should have a good idea of what to do when your corgi puppy cries next time and how to stop it.

Sound good? Let’s stop the crying tonight.

Why is my corgi crying?

There are a few common reasons why your puppy is whining like crazy. And how you can stop your corgi from crying.

Here we’ll cover a few of the different things that’ll make him whine and what you can do about it.

1. You just got your puppy!

Congrats! Welcome to puppyhood!

If you just brought your puppy home, it’s obvious that he’ll cry.

You can stop corgi crying by making the transition as positive as you can.

Bringing home a corgi puppy is a traumatic experience, so make sure you’re prepared to make it as easy as possible on the pup.

Do your research.

Double-check your supplies.

Have a game plan for the first year of ownership

Some puppies transition well and aren’t too bad. But most will cry nonstop. Maybe even through the night. Or on and off.

New corgi puppies don’t bode well.

Out of all the reasons why dogs cry, this is the most common amongst puppies across all breeds.

Some corgis will even start crying out of nowhere when they didn’t before. Others will whine all the time.

There’s no hard and fast rule. It depends on the specific puppy’s personality.

You should expect your corgi puppy to continue crying as he’s just left his littermates and original den.

He’s in a new environment he’s never seen before.

You heard that corgis are awesome so you bought one from a well-known breeder.

But now, you’re having second thoughts.

Your pup’s whining, peeing and defecating all over the place. Maybe even at the same time!

And he has no idea what happened to his parents and siblings.

Being in a new place with new people, sights, sounds, and scents is 100% disturbing to a young pup.

Therefore, you should do everything you can do to make the transition as smooth as possible.

Here are some tips to stop the crying:

Get an artificial puppy that has warmth or heartbeat sounds

Play classical or soothing music through your phone or computer

Sleep in the same room as your puppy

Sleep within the puppy’s view

Lend him your hand and hold him

Cuddle with the puppy on the couch or bed

Shower him with food and treats (to a lesser extent)

Provide a secure place he can hide (dog house, crate, etc.)

Provide water 24/7

You should expect the crying to last anywhere from 3 days to 14 days on average.

This depends on how well you do in the transition and how comfortable the puppy is.

The age of the puppy also matters. If you bring home an 8 week old corgi, it’ll have a lengher crying period compared to an adopted adult.

Be patient and take it one day at a time. They don’t call it the puppy blues for nothing.

Don’t worry about this too much. Your dog will outgrow the whining soo enough. Then you can graduate to the biting and nipping part of puppyhood.

2. Your corgi needs a nap

So you’re playing with your corgi and he’s doing fine. Then you hold him as you watch Netflix. No crying.

But then you walk away to cook dinner and he cuddles up at your feet. He starts crying. You try to feed him but he doesn’t bite.

You try to give him water and he doesn’t drink. He likely needs to sleep and take a nap.

Puppies take 3-6 naps a day and this is completely normal.

Any puppy’s routine is to eat, drink, play, nap, repeat. Your puppy needs to take a nap throughout the day.

Without this, he’ll get extremely tired and this can be bad for his health. Your puppy needs naps throughout the day.

Either hold him or put him back to his crate to let him nap. This should stop the crying right away.

One thing I noticed after working with puppies is that they don’t recognize that they can nap away from their pen or crate where they sleep.

After a few days, he may be comfortable in his pen where he sleeps.

But once you bring him to another room to play, he may tire out and have nowhere to nap.

After all, puppies are very hyper and difficult to calm.

Because he doesn’t have a safe place to sleep, he’ll get tired.

But doesn’t feel secure to nap. You may notice that he constantly goes into the corner or picks a favorite spot and then sits there.

Consider buying a dog bed and placing it there.

Over time, he’ll learn that he has different areas he can nap.

Once he feels comfortable enough, he’ll nap even away from his main sleeping area.

This should eliminate the napping problem when he recognizes that he has other areas to sleep aside from his crate.

3. Your puppy needs to relieve himself

Your corgi might whine because he needs to go potty.

Once the puppy gets used to his sleeping area, he may start to avoid soiling it.

This is true especially when he gets larger and larger. He’ll quickly learn to take up all the space and label it as a “sleeping” area.

Dogs avoid soiling their sleeping areas, so he’ll want to avoid this. If he cries in the middle of the night, that’s a good sign!

He’s getting housebroken and no longer soiling his crate or nearby it.

He’s getting used to going outside only (or his dedicated puppy pads). This is exactly what you want him to do- cry or whine to be taken outside!

This may also be the case if your puppy is indoors and needs to go outside.

Your puppy may start crying or whining when he needs to go, so you should take him out. You should also let your puppy get his bath routine setup while he’s still accepting during the socialization period.

4. Your puppy’s hungry

This is an obvious one. If your pup is hungry, he may cry for food.

Take your corgi to his food bowl and see if he wants to eat.

Some dogs are picky eaters and won’t eat all the time, so your dog may need to take a bite.

Other dogs will eat until they bulge outwards from the waist, so that’s why you always need to measure out the right amount when you start the day and feed on a schedule.

5. Your corgi’s cold

Don’t forget that the coat isn’t developed yet in young puppies.

If you live in a cold area or you have the AC on, your pup may be cold.

Puppies don’t have their full coat yet and may not be able to tolerate colder temperatures, especially if they’re single coated.

Corgis have dual coats, but corgi puppies are still sensitive to cold weather and ambient temperatures because it’s not fully fleshed out yet.

(Get ready for the fur storm!)

You may also notice him shiver or shake.

Sometimes when you pick up your puppy, he may squirm and wriggle around in your arms.

He could be seeing something he wants to check out but you’re just walking by.

This leads to him trying to squirm his way out of your arms while crying and whining at the same time. The same goes for play pens and other confined areas.

7. Your puppy wants to go to sleep

Even though you provided your corgi plenty of naps throughout the day, he may still be tired by nightfall and looking to go to sleep.

This is especially true if you tire out your dog by playing, training, or exercising him. Puppies have bursts of energy and then basically crash hard.

They need a lot of exercise as they’re a herding breed built to chase animals with their stubby frame.

They need their naps throughout the day. He may cry at nighttime because he wants to be taken to his crate to sleep.

His naps from earlier may have not been enough to recharge him, and he doesn’t feel safe sleeping outside his crate yet.

Take him to his crate and he just may run right into his den for the night.

8. Your corgi wants attention

Can you really resist those floppy ears?

Dogs will cry and whine for attention. He may have gotten his naps, food, water, and expanded his energy for the day.

But if you’re busy cooking, cleaning, relaxing, or doing whatever, he may be begging for your attention.

As puppies age, they’ll grow out of this. Unless they have separation anxiety or weren’t socialized properly.

You’ll have to spend time and allocate a portion of your day to your dog. They require a good chunk of your day to properly train, raise and socialize.

If you don’t, this could lead to unwanted behaviors down the line.

9. Your corgi wants to get to you

Corgi puppies need attention, but how much?

Do you have your corgi locked up somewhere?

Perhaps in a play pen or his crate?

This will make him cry, especially when he’s not used to it. Make the pen or crate a happy place.

Play with your puppy. Put his food in there. Make the place enjoyable and associate it with a place to relax and calm down.

Don’t just toss him in there and ignore him. Give him a treat for going there.

However, you need to balance the difference between giving him attention every time he cries or else he’ll learn quickly that crying and whining means that you’ll come to him.

This builds separation problems and you should avoid bad behaviors. Use positive reinforcement at all times.

When you should bring him to the vet

This is important if you have no idea why your dog won’t stop crying.

Even if it’s not an emergency, a visit to the vet will give you peace of mind and a quick consultation.

They know tips and tricks to calm down a pup and can explain why they do what they do.

If you’ve tried everything and your pup still doesn’t stop crying, he may be hurt or dealing with pain.

You should take him to the vet to see if there’s anything wrong with your dog.

Random crying that doesn’t seem to happen at any particular time could be a reason to get a vet exam just to be sure.

Any other reasons to suspect a visit to vet shouldn’t be ignored:

Change in appetite

Weight changes

Restlessness or extreme fatigue

Change in appearance

Behavioral change

Constant crying when all needs have been met
