Does your corgi hate water? Do you want to make him swim? Learn about the breed's history and socialization techniques for water.

So, you want to know if corgis like water and swimming.

Or you want to MAKE your corgi like water.

In this article, we’ll cover:

The breed history in regards to water

How to socialize your corgi to not be afraid of water

What to do if your corgi is scared of swimming

And more

Sound good? Let’s “dive” in.

Are corgis good swimmers?

Corgis are similar to most other herding breeds.

They may or may not like water depending on how they were socliazed during the first 6 months of their puppyhood.

By nature, their short stature and legs aren’t necessarily made for paddling waves on the ocean.

They do have double-coats as many other herding dogs do. This allows them to adapt to colder temperatures to continue herding- whether in the rain or snow.

But even then, they have short and powerful things that can help them doggy paddle their way across the water.

Corgis were bred for herding animals on land, not the sea, ocean, river, lake, or pond.

So that means they weren’t really used for water sports.

But that doesn’t mean you can’t enjoy watching your corgi paddling across the water.

Or watch your corgi carry another corgi floating on a corgi float, like this:

Can corgis swim?

Almost every species of dog can swim to some extent.

Corgis are no exception. If you drop your dog in a baby pool, it’ll probably swim across with no problem, whether he enjoys doing the splish splash or not!

My corgi is afraid of getting wet and hates water

Most dogs will avoid any source of water, except for their own water bowl.

The important part is to slowly and gradually allow your corgi to get used to water.

Pairing swimming with positive reinforcement will help him learn to associate water with good times.

Sadly, most dogs absolutely hate getting wet.

So unless your corgi naturally likes water, he’ll probably grow up to avoid it.

This is why you need to socialize your corgi early on.

Here’s the problem.

Before exposing their dogs to water slowly and one step at a time, new owners will just dunk their dog into the bath and make it a traumatic experience.

This is completely wrong and just frightens the dog. And this is why so many dogs end up hating bathtime.

People are compelled to wash their dogs after they bring them home for the first night. Or after they go outside. Or they’re just not used to paw prints all over their home so they excessively shower their dog (which strips the natural oils of the skin).

The trick is to FIRST expose the dog to water and gradually work your work up to a full shower.

NOT spray and hose down your corgi. Or just dunk him right into a bathtub.

This is why most dogs hate water and getting wet. It’s because of the initial exposure to it. And this is why you need to properly show your dog that bathtime and water lead to rewards.

Sadly, most newbie owners won’t read this advice before they blast their dog with the hose.

And then they learn after the corgi is out of the critical period and hard to fix bad behaviors.

Socialize and expose your dog to water

Exposing him to water and pairing it with good rewards makes him enjoy the process.

In the future, he’ll associate that water means to treat or praise, which corgis will strive for.

The key is to take it one step at a time and slowly raise your expectations.

Do NOT spray your dog with water or put him into a tub.

Use baby steps even if he can’t get a full shower at first.

And constantly reward and praise him during the ENTIRE process.

Should your dog ever start to hate water and struggle, go back one step and expect less.

This will take time.

You won’t be able to do this overnight for sure. Unless you have a corgi that’s already been socialized by a good breeder. Or a wondercorgi.

Even though this breed doesn’t always try to please their owners because of their strong independent and stubborn nature, they still can be trained to enjoy swimming.

How to get your corgi to like water

Corgis can be trained to like water.

Here’s how you should approach getting your corgi to like water and swimming:

Expose him to water as young as possible. Ideally, this should be done in the socialization period (between 12-16 weeks).

At the beginning, just get some water on your fingers and let him lick it off.

Constantly reward your dog with treats during this part. Repeat on a daily basis and slowly increase the volume of water.

If you’re using a hose, faucet, sink, or something that has a control mechanism for the water flow, slowly make it louder and increase the flow over time.

After your corgi is used to the water, start petting him with a wet hand.

Again, reward with treats. If your dog struggles or tries to run away, lower your standards and go back to the previous step. You can try distracting him with some food while petting.

The next step is to get your corgi to walk into water. Form a puddle outside and reward your dog for walking into it.

Pet him in the puddle. Give him treats. Continually make it a positive experience.

After he’s comfortable with walking into water by himself, you can try placing him into water.

You may have already done this a few times by giving him a bath. If you didn’t use treats or positive reinforcement, he may already have a few phobias.

You’ll have to break this and dissociate the water with negative experiences as much as you can.

You can start with placing just his limbs into an inch or so of water. Reward and praise him throughout the process.

When he’s comfortable, you can slowly increase the amount of water. Using a sink, bathtub, or kiddie pool are all excellent.

A small pool works perfectly. You can go with your corgi into the water and swim with him.

Practice having him swim towards you, fetching small floating toys, and moving around the water.

Praise him with treats and positive association.

This is just a sample water socialization plan.

Not all corgis will like to swim or get wet

This is normal behavior.

There are many different ways to do this.

NOT all corgis will respond positively, nor can all dogs be trained to like water. If your corgi hates it and can’t move to the next step, he may just be a dog that doesn’t like water.

Similar to how humans definitely have their own personality, your dog has his own.

He may just never like water or swimming. And that’s okay.

Unless you’re competing in a dog sport, there’s no need to force your corgi to swim.

You may be able to convert him to enjoying a dive in the pool with repeated exposure.

And if you just can’t get him to budge, consider hiring a professional dog trainer. They may be able to help get your corgi to swim.

Does your corgi love water yet?

<img decoding="async" width="1024" height="685" src="https://corgiadoption.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/06/do-corgis-like-swimming-1024x685.jpg" alt="Corgis can be trained to swim and enjoy water." class="wp-image-1181" title="Do Corgis Like Water? Not all dogs will like water.

Not all dogs can be trained to enjoy swimming. If your corgi is struggling, take it easy, and lower your standards.

Keep it light and playful. Reward with treats and praise.

Don’t ever force your dog to swim- this just does the complete opposite of what you’re trying to accomplish.

Sound good? Let’s get your corgi to lick instead of bite. How’s that?

Last updated: 6/28/20.

Why your corgi puppy is biting you

All puppies go through a nipping phase as they grow up. Most breeders will sell their puppies between weeks 8 to 10, which is right around the teething phase.

The time looks like this:

0 weeks: puppies are born with no teeth

2-4 weeks: puppies start to get their canines, molars, incisors, and premolars.

5-8 weeks: puppies develop their 28 puppy teeth (baby teeth) over these critical periods. Milk teeth start to fall out during chewing behaviors. This is why they chew nearly everything.

12-16 weeks: the adult teeth start to show up and force their baby teeth out.

By 6 months, their full set of permanent adult teeth will have grown in and they’ll shed their baby teeth out.

Adults will have a full set of 42 teeth, unlike the 28 baby teeth when they were just puppies.

The proper term is teething. Puppies will have constantly shifting teeth that are growing and falling out, which can cause extremely discomfort to them.

They usually don’t whine or cry over their tooth pain, but they’ll get mild discomfort. This is why they start chewing on anything and everything.

During the teething part of his life, you’ll want to provide him plenty of chew toys to relieve the discomfort. Giving your puppy a variety of toys is important, as each pup has their own preferences.

Some prefer hard toys, others like soft ones. There are also different materials, like plastic, nylon, fabric, and rubber.

Depending on the texture, style, and functionality of the toy, you can really create a bunch of possibilities for him to chew.

If the dog isn’t interested in the chew toy, then try replacing it with another. Not all chew toys are the same.

You’re reinforcing the behavior without knowing it

Biting and nipping easily can be corrected with persistence.

Did you know that when your corgi bites and you pull your hand back only encourages him to keep biting?

The same goes for quickly retracting your sandals, feet, or arms from his mouth.

The natural response is to remove your limbs from his reach because his bites hurt.

But then seconds later, you move your hand back, and he’s nipping again. It’s just a cycle that repeats over and over.

Corgis are a nippy breed, so this should be no surprise.

The bad part? You’re encouraging him to bite.

Why? Because he thinks of it like a game. Every time you remove your hand and take it out of his reach and put it back, it’s basically dog games 101.

He knows the hand or foot will return after a few seconds, to which he’ll just take another bite. The cycle repeats over and over again.

In fact, some dogs can use it to manipulate their owners. If their owner ignores them, doesn’t feed them, or otherwise if the corgi wants his owner’s attention, he can just bite.

Since he’s conditioned to have a response from you after he bites, he can use this to his benefit and “force” a response from you.

This is an example of dog-owner manipulation. Since corgis are one of the top 20 smartest dogs, they’ll use and abuse this.

We’ll cover this later in detail.

How to stop your corgi puppy from biting

There are are few proven techniques that work for most corgi puppies to stop the nipping.

None of these require you to spend any money on courses, equipment, or consults with the vet (though you should if he continues to bite).

Try all of them out and see which one your corgi responds to. Remember, the trick is to reinforce the behaviors you WANT and stop the ones you DON’T.

Ignore the behavior

This is the easiest technique because it requires you to do absolutely nothing. If your corgi puppy has been conditioned to get your attention by biting or mouthing, you can break that connection by completely ignoring their biting.

This only works when the corgi is still young and hasn’t developed his adult set of teeth yet, or still doesn’t have a powerful bite.

The trick is to simply do nothing when he bites. Let him bite your finger, toes, sandals, ankles, knees, thighs, arms, or whatever else he nips on.

But DON’T respond to the behavior. This means don’t pull your hand or foot back. Don’t tell him “no.” Don’t yell, hit, or otherwise tie any response to the mouthing.

When the puppy learns that he can’t get your attention by nipping at you, he’ll stop.

But this only works sometimes. If he’s been trained to get your attention by biting you and you break the association that bite = attention, he may stop.

Stop and wait

This works best for puppies that are hyper.

This method works by reinforcing the notion that biting means stopping.

If your puppy constantly tries to bite your feet or shoes when you walk around the home, you may be doing circles around him just to make it across the room.

This often leads to you making weird footsteps, waddling, or circling your feet above him only to have him attack your shoes the next time it lands.

This is very common behavior, especially for puppies who are teething.

In his mind, this is what he’s thinking:

We’re having fun and playing games

We’re walking towards MY next treat or meal

We’re going to take a walk

We’re going to do whatever other activity

On your journey to your corgi’s next activity, he’ll enjoy nipping at your foot in meantime.

But that’s when you can try to STOPeverything as soon as he bites.

This means you stop walking, talking, or even making eye contact with your puppy. You stop everything and just literally freeze in place.

Try looking up at the roof and turning around with your arms crossed.

Stay in this position for a few seconds. You’ll notice that your puppy will begin sniffing around and circling you. He may even sit down and stare at your face.

Be sure to not look at him during this time. He may start jumping at you, barking, crying, whining, or doing other things to get your attention. Your puppy may even start getting playful.

Wait until he settles down and stops. Then proceed walking to your destination.

When he starts nipping at your foot again, repeat the process. Stop and wait.

This may take you quite some time to make it across a room. But eventually, he’ll get the message.

Your corgi will learn that biting means you’ll start ignoring him and stopping progress to his next treat, meal, walk, or whatever else he’s expecting.

The important part is to stop RIGHT when he bite. As soon as you feel the teeth, stop and wait.

You can apply this technique to other areas he bites, such as your fingers, hands, arms, and ankles.

Whatever you’re doing, when he nips, just stop and wait.

If you’re prepping his meal and he’s biting your arms, stop.

If you’re trying to refill his water and he’s biting your feet, stop.

If you’re trying to grab your morning cup of coffee and he’s biting your sandals, stop.

The key is to associate to him that biting means halted progress. He’ll get nowhere if he bites. And he needs to learn that.

This works best for corgi puppies who have associated that nipping at their owner means progress to their next meal.

Yelping

This is one of the most popular techniques and has a high success rate.

All you need to do is make a “yelping” noise when he starts biting you. The point is that dogs communicate with this same noise when they get hurt.

Your corgi puppy will be used to this from his littermates when he plays too rough.

Either him or his littermates will let out a loud yelp when they get hurt and this tells other dogs to back off.

Before your puppy was weaned, he likely played often with his siblings in his litter and learned the cue for “that really hurts!”

Dogs learn this by default. Puppies and adult dogs both universally know the meaning behind this dog signal.

This lets you, as his owner, communicate the exact same thing by letting out a loud exclamation when he bites.

You can shriek, scream, or just exclaim whatever you want.

Choose a single phrase, and use the same phrase every time:

Eek!

Yelp!

Ouch!

Ehh!

Yikes!

Stop!

Ahhh!

Anything works. Just make it a single syllable. Higher-pitched sounds work best, as puppies naturally communicate this way.

Don’t yell directly into his ears, as puppy ears are sensitive and you can make him scared of loud noises forever or damage his hearing.

Yell facing upwards or away from the dog.

Yell as soon as you feel his teeth. If you yell too early or if he attempted to lick you rather than bite you may be stopping him from positive behaviors.

Don’t yell overly loud. You’ll have to play around and see the perfect volume. But it shouldn’t be to the point where it scares him permanently- not too quiet to the point where he ignores it.

Keep the yelp quick and fast (under 1 second). There’s no need to “drag” it out and make it extra painful for him to listen to. Keep it fast and quick!

Use the same phrase every time. This is what puppies do, so you should keep it consistent and use the same sounds also.

Don’t punish after you yell. You don’t want to reinforce a negative behavior after you yell.

The yelp should be enough to startle your corgi and stop the biting.

Your corgi will back off and take a few steps away. He’ll probably stare at you and assess the situation for a few moments.

If your dog bites again, repeat the process until he gets it. This may take a few rounds.

You may also need to adjust your volume, phrase, or timing if he still bites even if you yelp.

Remember, you don’t want to scare your corgi or associate other negative actions with the yelping.

You just want him to know that biting hurts. That’s it.

Redirect his attention

Provide chew toys rather than fingers and toes for your puppy to chew on.

This techniques has you using a proper object for your corgi puppy to chew.

When he starts nipping at you, use a chew toy and let him chew on that instead. Position it in front of his mouth and get his attention.

When he start chewing on the toy, that’s it. The trick is to repeat this process over and over until he knows to chew the toy- not your fingers!

If your corgi doesn’t chew the toy or isn’t interested, make it interesting.

Consider the following tips:

Try a variety of chew toys to see which one he likes (rope toys, soft toys, hard toys, squeaky toys, etc.)

Use a Kong or other chew toy with a hole that you can fill with treats

Apply peanut butter on the chew toy

You can also reward your puppy for chewing on the toy.

Get a clicker and click as soon as he focuses his teeth on the toy rather than your fingers, toes, or hands. Then give him the treat for chewing on the toy.

You can create positive reinforcement by rewarding him for chewing on the proper object and eventually he’ll learn to chew the toy rather than you! This will take time.

Put your corgi puppy in time out

The last option is to simply place your dog in its pen or crate. If it doesn’t respond to any of the other techniques here and you’re constantly getting nipped at, take your puppy and place it in the pen.

Note to not overdo this, as long periods of alone time may make your puppy destructive.

Only release it after it settles. This works best for mouthy corgis during the teething phase. For puppies that nip, chew, bite, and are extremely mouthy, provide the pup with alone time.

If the behavior continues, repeat as necessary.

Bites = time out. If you’re at your wit’s end and your corgi’s biting is out of control, put it in its pen or crate.

This will prevent it from biting you further. And also teaches your puppy that biting does NOT get it what it wants!

Consult a trainer

This is another option you can utilize if you’ve tried everything else and can’t get your puppy to stop being mouthy.

You can also ask the breeder you got the puppy from. If they’re truly reputable, they should be able to answer basic corgi care questions.

There are professional dog trainers, many of which you’ll find locally. You can look up puppy training classes offered through large branches, or hire a contractor to train your dog.

Adopted corgis or corgis raised with poor behavior can have some deep behavior problems that can’t be corrected easily. They can also have aggression problems from no socialization.

You should now have an arsenal of different techniques to get him to stop biting.

Try a few of them out and see what works best for you.

Every corgi is different and there’s no universal solution. It’s your job to find out what works for your puppy, as no one else knows him as well as you.

Be patient. Even if you fail miserably and enver stop biting, the teething only lasts until he becomes an adolescent. It’ll just be a pain (no pun intended) to deal with the niping until then.

Signs of an undisciplined corgi puppy

Discipline training doesn’t only mean teaching your corgi not to bite.

There are a lot of other areas that are combined under the same terminology.

Here are some examples of corgis that need discipline training:

Jumping on the furniture, bed, or other furnishings

Chewing on wires, blankets, covers, or other household objects

Pulling on towels, tablecloths, blankets, etc.

Disobeying commands

Racing around the home

Extreme aggressiveness

Housebreaking problems

Teeth showing or barking

Growling

Biting or nipping ankles, fingers, or feet

A drastic change in behavior

The possibilities are endless.

Any corgi puppy can show signs of poor discipline training. And most can benefit from corrective actions.

When it comes to disciplining your corgi puppy, the main concern new owners have is to stop the biting.

Sure, it’s cute and harmless when the puppy is small. But when it grows up, if the behavior is never stopped, those tiny nips can turn into some “real” bites.

We’ll cover some methods to discipline a corgi puppy geared towards stopping the biting.

Note that you can apply the techniques here to other unwanted behaviors also.

How do I get my Corgi puppy to stop biting?

There are multiple methods you can try out at home that you can help stop your corgi puppy from biting.

This is how you discipline your dog.

Puppies always need guidance to show them what’s acceptable and what’s not.

During the socialization period (weeks 8-12), this is the prime time to socialize your puppy and also when it’s the most obedient.

This is when you can teach it what’s okay and what’s not- such as nipping and biting your fingers, housebreaking, bathing, etc.

If your corgi nips, here are some tips to stop the behavior.

How to discipline a corgi

A stubborn corgi.

Here are some tips to help correct corgi behaviors at home.

1. Guide the puppy

If he nips, calmly let him know that it’s not okay by redirecting the biting to a toy.

Use a chew toy that’s made to be chewed on.

Replace your finger with the toy. Constantly reinforce this behavior.

2. Use noise

Every time your puppy nips on you, let our quick and high-pitched yelp.

This is similar to what puppies do when they get hurt. You’re just trying to replicate it.

After you yelp, turn around and ignore your corgi. This will show him that the nibbles on your feet, fingers, and ankles are NOT okay.

There are minor differences in how your puppy will react.

Depending on previous socialization, age, the breed of the corgi, and the corgi’s personality- this may actually make them more excited. Male and female corgis may also react differently. You should assess the situation and act accordingly.

If your dog freaks out negatively, perhaps the silent treatment would be sufficient as a substitute.

Be aloof and don’t respond to your puppy when it does something wrong.

If you can do this every time, he’ll quickly learn to stop the biting.

3. Be cold and aloof

After each time your puppy nips at you, right away don’t respond.

Don’t give him any attention. Straight up ignore the corgi by putting your chin up and face the ceiling. Cross your arms. Stand still. Stay like this until the puppy walks away.

This shows that as soon as he nips you, he no longer gets to play, eat, or get any attention. Combine this with a yelp and you should have decent results.

This can work for corgi puppies that are aggressive or constantly nip.

But you can also use this for corgis that jump on the furniture.

The standstill really tells the dog that it’s no longer playtime after he bites.

Remember that corgis were born to herd a few thousands of pounds of cattle back in the day (and even today).

So they need to bark, nip, and do whatever it takes to move those cows. This is in their genes and they can’t just ignore it. It comes instinctually.

Thus, you need to show that this behavior is not acceptable in your domain and be a calm, dominant, alpha leader.

Stand tall. Legs apart. Shoulders wide. Arms crossed. The dog will probably sit there and stare at you.

Don’t even look him in the eye. Completely go silent to your puppy every time he bites you. This will disciple the corgi puppy to quickly learn that biting means game over.

4. Don’t excite the puppy

Some corgis actually get more excited when you exclaim, yell, or yelp.

Curb the behavior.

You may want to see how the puppy reacts when you do something like this.

Even though it’s a negative yelp, your dog may be excited over it and thus only continues the negative behavior.

You may notice your corgi start to race around the house doing more of what you told him not to do, such as biting, chewing, or barking.

If your dog reacts positively to your “no” commands, yelps, or other attempts to discourage a behavior, you should stick with an all silent approach.

5. Use time-out areas

A “time-out” area can be helpful to calm down your puppy or to passively punish your dog for doing something negative.

When your dog bites during playtime or constantly jumps on the furniture, you can move him to a designated area in your home for a timeout.

Your puppy may start barking like crazy or whining. Don’t give in to these cues.

You must leave the puppy alone when it’s on time out. The point of this is to create a place where the dog can calm down from excitement.

Your puppy must be alone and separated from you for a set period of time.

Use this for nipping, chewing, furniture jumping, or other unwanted behaviors.

Every time you bring the dog back out of the timeout, watch its behavior.

As soon as it replicates the unwanted behavior again, put it back to timeout right away. Don’t lapse or else it won’t understand why you’re putting it there.

6. Exercise your corgi

The more your dog is exercised, the less energy it’ll have to bark, chew, and jump on your bed.

This is something you should already be doing on a daily basis. Corgis are not house dogs.

Many people think that corgis will do fine by themselves as long as they give them a simple walk or two. This is wrong. Corgis aren’t dogs that can be alone at home all day.

They need vigorous exercise for at least an hour daily.

If your dog is misbehaving, this could actually be a sign of excess energy and the “destructive” corgi behavior everyone talks about from unexercised dogs.

7. Enroll in a puppy class

Corgi classes exist. And they can help give you guidance if you’re at a loss of how to discipline your corgi.

There are many obedience classes for puppies and this is something you should consider if nothing you do works.

The thing to keep in mind is that you should be attending with your puppy- not sending it off like daycare.

You need to be there. You need to see the professional and meet them. And you need to also learn how they use various methods to discipline corgi puppies.

Don’t sign up for a class where you drop the dog off and come back later.

These are useless for you as a dog parent and you won’t be getting the most for your money. Don’t skimp on this.

8. Combine the methods

You can combine the various discipline techniques here for the best effect.

Don’t rely on one or two of them, as every corgi puppy is different and takes to training differently.

This means you should see what works best for your puppy and utilize it. Combine multiple techniques to make a program catered to your puppy.

No one knows your dog more than you yourself.

So you’ll have to sit down and do some thinking to create a discipline plan for your corgi puppy.

Corgis are smart dogs and learn quickly. It’s your job to teach your puppy what’s right and wrong.

Remember that your corgi is eager to please (most of the time). If it fails to respond to your commands, you need to consistently enforce the behaviors you desire.

Wondering if corgis are easy to train? Here's what you need to know about the breed's intelligence, training, and housebreaking.

So, you’re wondering how easy or hard it’ll be to train a corgi.

Perhaps you’re considering adopting or buying a corgi and you want to know how many headaches you’ll have to deal with to train it.

Yikes.

In this article, we’ll cover:

How smart are corgis?

Are corgis easy to potty train?

The overall difficulty of corgi training

And more

By the end of this article, you should have everything you need to know about corgi training basics.

Let’s get started.

Are corgis smart?

Yes, corgis are considered to be a smart dog breed.

Because of their intelligence, they’re relatively easy to train and teach new commands.

Corgis are known for their degree of intelligence, splooting, furry butt, and even their vocality.

Corgis are stubborn

However, corgis are also stubborn, meaning they like to think for themselves. This may make them difficult to train even if they’re smart.

Corgis are known to do what they feel like more than pleasing their owners, which means if your corgi doesn’t want to do tricks or listen to commands, it won’t.

This is probably the major drawback to having a smart dog breed because they know how to make their own calls. If they don’t want to do something, their stubbornness will stop them.

You shouldn’t expect your corgi to constantly try to please you. Some owners even noticed that their corgi puppy became stubborn with time.

They’re food-driven

Corgis are heavily driven by food as a motivator and reward. You can exploit this to get your corgi to listen to basic commands and follow your lead.

With regular training and positive reinforcement by food, you can have a well-trained corgi that’s eager to please (for food).

Some owners have even said that their corgi calculates if the punishment is worth the action- especially when the dog does something it shouldn’t be.

This is an example of corgis possibly being too smart and how the intelligence of the breed can backfire on the owner.

Stubborn, but smart

Corgis can be stubborn because of their high IQ, so it’s a double-edged sword.

Sure, being smart means that the dog will pick up new commands quickly, but it also means that it doesn’t have to always listen and will make its own judgment calls.

Corgis should be taught obedience training and commands from an early age as a puppy so that it’ll listen to them as an adult.

So don’t get upset if your dog decides to think for itself- it’s normal even though it seems like your training is going backward!

These dogs will continue to learn even beyond the puppy part of its life and need the mental stimulation to stay healthy.

But then again, not all corgis are stubborn. If you happen to get one that’s eager to please its owner, that’s a nice combination.

A smart dog that’s easy to train and willing to please its owner!

How smart are corgis?

Corgis are extremely smart compared to other breeds.

These dogs simply have little competition other than a few other popular dog breeds, like Border Collies or Poodles.

Even though the degree of intelligence between Cardigans and Pembrokes are different, the breed overall ranks highly.

Are Pembrokes or Cardigans smarter?

Both Cardigan and Pembroke corgis are known as “bright dogs” based on the research of Stanely Coren– a canine researcher who studies dog IQ.

Pembroke corgis are currently ranked as the 11th most intelligent dog.

Cardigans are lagging behind at the 31st most intelligent breed.

But, even at that spot, both breeds are considered to be very smart.

Their intelligence allows them to quickly learn new commands and take on obedience training easily.

Although corgis aren’t in the top 10 world’s smartest dogs, they’re still nipping at the heels of the Australian Cattle Dog, which ranks at 10th place.

Pembroke Welsh Corgis are considered to be bright dogs and are one of the smartest dog breeds in the world.

Are corgis easy to potty train?

Just like any other dog, it depends on the environment, your training regimen, and the dog’s personality. In general, corgis learn to become housebroken quickly because of their sheer smartness.

But at the same time, these dogs are known to think for themselves and be stubborn at times.

This means if your corgi doesn’t feel like going pee in the usual spot, it won’t.

Their stubbornness can affect progress

This can be extremely discouraging right when you think that your dog has learned how to go outside, but then takes two steps back and does the opposite.

Remember to continue and be persistent with your training regimen.

Potty training a corgi is easier because it’s smarter, but also more difficult because it’s stubborn.

Corgis are highly motivated by food rewards, so use that and exploit it to help facilitate training your dog.

How hard is it to train a corgi?

Corgis are extremely easy to train.

It’s not hard at all.

Corgis are an extremely smart dog breed and will learn new commands in just a few repetitions.

The brightest dogs that are in the top 10 learn commands in less than 5 repetitions. And these are new commands that they’ve never been exposed to.

The top 10 dogs obey the first command 95% of the time or more, which is amazing.

Corgis learn quickly

Just think about teaching your corgi a new trick and learning it in just 2-3 tries. That’s smart. Even though corgis aren’t in the top 10, they’re just barely out of the picture.

Depending on the specific dog, your corgi may very well be ranked within the top 10 dogs because the dog intelligence rankings are just averages.

Just keep your dog rewarded by food and motivate it to learn your commands!

Corgis are easy to train

<img decoding="async" width="1024" height="682" src="http://corgiadoption.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/01/how-smart-are-corgis-1-1024x682.jpg" alt="A smart corgi outdoors." class="wp-image-209" title="Are Corgis Easy to Train?
Now you should have a better idea of how easy it is to train a corgi!

With their smart nature, they’re very easy to train breed. The only thing that can hinder progress is their stubborn nature, though this depends on the dog and personality.
