Why does my corgi poop so often?

There could be a multitude of reasons why your corgi constantly needs to go outside (or on his pee pad).

Based on input from online corgi owners, the average corgi will poop about 3-4 times in a 24 hour period.

Your corgi may need to poop more or less depending on a variety of different factors.

Some corgis like to do it all at once. Others will poop just a little bit and then hold it. And then continue again later.

So you may just see smaller feces come out of your dog.

For example, you may take a morning job with your corgi and he’ll only go 2 times.

But then they may go out at odd times (after feeding, a nap, or playing) and go again. This can total up to 6+ times a day while other corgis may only go twice a day.

Or you may take your dog out and he’ll go poop. Then come back and need to go again in 20 minutes. Then again after 5 mins on a walk. Maybe even twice on that same walk.

That’s completely normal. Corgis have small bodies and they have extra room for all their digested food because of their elongated, dachshund-like bodies.

So this lets them hold a lot of poop until they need to go. That’s why it’s hard to completely “empty” a corgi!

All of these variables can determine and change your corgi’s necessity to relieve himself:

• How often you feed
• At what times you feed
• How much you feed
• How often you take walks
• How often you play with the dog
• A daily routine
• The age of your corgi
• Possible parasites, worms, or a disease

All of these factors influence how often your corgi needs to poop.

Note that it can be just a single variable, such as exercising your corgi more during the summer (burning more calories) and less during the winter (fewer calories consumed).

Thus, your corgi will eat a lot more food during the period of exercise compared to being sedentary. And this will directly affect how often your corgi poops.

Something as simple as that canmake all the difference.

That’s why you need to ask yourself about any recent changes to your corgi’s routine (food consumed, hours slept, etc.).

(You should be keeping track of all these anyway- your vet will thank you.)

How to control or limit corgi pooping

Believe it or not, you’re nearly in complete control over your corgis pooping schedule.

You control the food source, how often he goes out, and how often he gets fed.

So if you’re tired of taking him out every hour or in the middle of the night, there are things you can do to change that habit.

Of course, things like how much he defecates outside aren’t controllable. But other variables are definitely adjustable by you.

There are some things you can fully adjust to limit how often your dog needs to do his business.

Stop feeding before bedtime

A neat trick is to simply stop feeding him late-night dinners.

Don’t feed him 3-4 hours before bed. This will make him less prone to poop in the middle of the night- but only if you have him go outside before he goes to sleep.

A typical puppy will take anywhere from 2-4 hours between “poop intervals.” so if you stop feeding at 6PM and he goes to bed at 10PM, then he’ll relieve himself before bed.

This may help stop him from waking up at 2-3AM to go again.

You need to play around with these numbers to see what works for you. Every corgi is different.

Check how much you’re feeding

If you’re overfeeding, which many new dog owners will do, he’ll need to go more often. Be sure you’re feeding the right amounts of dog food.

Read the feeding chart on your pack of dog food. Every bag should have one, unless you’re using a shady unknown brand (to which you should promptly replace with a reputable brand).

Feed according to the chart and based on the number of calories your dog needs to maintain his baseline caloric metabolism.

Then add more food based on how much exercise he gets, how often he’s awake, and how often you already feed him.

You can use this calculator to check his baseline amount. This is the minimum you should be feeding him based on calories.

Puppies should be fed 3-4 times a day and it should taper down to just 1-2 meals a day as an adult.

When he reaches full size, do NOT overfeed by keeping the same amount you fed him as a puppy. Puppies eat more food than adults. Not the other way around.

Overfeeding will lead to dog obesity, which 56% of dogs currently suffer from. Don’t make your corgi sick without knowing it and making him suffer.

Limit and keep track of human food

Feeding table scraps should be discouraged and only done for training rewards or as a supplement to their regular staple kibble.

But then again, resisting those puppy eyes begging for human food is hard.

(FYI: There are ways to feed table scraps without having him learn to beg for it!).

Regardless, you should be tracking human food added to his diet.

Newbie dog owners will feed huge portions to their dog, which is bad for many reasons:

• It leads to overfeeding
• Your dog will beg
• Your dog will learn to dislike his regular kibble (which should be nutritionally balanced)
• Human food poses the risk of being toxic to your corgi (caffeine, nuts, etc.)

Unless you’ve spend countless hours building the perfect diet that satisfies all the nutritional needs of a dog, you should leave that to the professionals (reputable dog food makers)

No dog food is perfect. But their guaranteed analysis of necessary nutrients (protein, calcium, etc.) is often following strict guidelines by the AAFCO.

This is much safer for the typical corgi owner who has no idea of what nutrients corgis need.

Supplementing with human food messes up this balance and can lead to overweight corgis, excess nutrients, and other diseases which can be avoided easily.

Establish a routine for everything

Dogs are creatures of habit and being completely random on a daily basis may make basic house training more difficult.

Once you have a routine setup, you’ll find that it’s much easier to keep track of when your corgi needs to pee or poop and how often he needs to go.

A routine means literally everything:

• Feeding
• Playing
• Taking him outside
• Mandatory naps
• Training
• Waking up and sleeping

Keep everything at the same time every day as much as you can.

This makes your dog get used to a flow of activities. And it makes it easier for you to predict when he’ll need to poop and pee (and when).

For most people who have typical jobs (9-5), you can establish a morning walk and feeding session. Then go to work.

After you come back, you can continue with another walk, feeding session, playing/training, and settle down for the night.

It’s not always easy especially for busy individuals. You can consider having a friend, relative, or dog sitter help you out with the burden.

After all, this should be something that you consider before adopting or getting a corgi, as corgi’s aren’t dogs that can be left alone at home.

This may lead to unwanted bad behaviors like separation anxiety, biting and chewing everything, barking and poor socialization.

It’s always sad to see another corgi given up and surrendered by their unsuspecting owner who had no idea they were so much work.

Or for those who quickly search “popular dog breeds” or “smartest dog breeds” and decide on giving a corgi to someone.

Make sure he plays and exercises frequently

Corgis are born to move.

Not only is proper exercise required for a healthy corgi, but it also helps them get their poop flowing (sorry).

The vibrations, excitement, and just being both mentally and physically stimulated at the same time seems to work magic on these dogs. It makes them have to use the bathroom shortly after, especially if they’re still a puppy.

Make sure you get in the daily exercise amounts daily and expect your dog to have to go poop shortly after.

This is one way you can control how often he poops and helps empty his stomach. In other words, you’re giving him a little “push.”

Have a set amount of time each day to play or exercise your dog.

Time how long it takes to usekes to go poop afterwards. Combined with a routine diet, feeding time, and feeding amounts, you’ll be able to easily predict when he’ll need to go again.

The running around will help facilitate his next defecation.

You can do anything from playing Tug of War, running, tag, fetch, and even just frisbee to keep him mobile.

You’ll soon see that you can “make” him go poop after a serious play session! Use this to your benefit and control your corgi’s pooping regimen and schedule.

Avoid free-feeding

When your corgi’s just a puppy, you’ll want to feed 3-4 times a day at equal intervals at the same exact time.

For example, you could feed at 8AM, 12PM, 4PM, and 8PM.

Measure out the proper amount of food for your corgi before the first meal.

Then place the dog bowl down and let him eat for 30 minutes.

After that, remove the bowl until the next feeding session. Adjust as necessary based on caloric energy and your dog’s age.

There’s a lot of debate between feeding on a schedule vs. free feeding.

Free feeding is where you just leave access to food 24/7 (fill up the bowl and leave it there).

Whereas feeding on a schedule is using measured amounts and feeding throughout the day at equally spaced time periods.

Personally, I think feeding at scheduled intervals beats free feeding for multiple reasons:

When you feed on a schedule, your puppy’s next poop session becomes very predictable.

Feeding on a schedule helps build food motivation, which is necessary for training, obedience, and other food-based interactions.

It keeps your corgi fixed to a routine, and dogs are creatures of habit

Routines make training and housebreaking a LOT easier because you can tell when your corgi needs to poop

You can use kibble or the staple food as a reward, which means less treats (which should only be 10% of the diet)

It helps build appetite for picky dogs (he’ll eat the kibble if he’s starving plus not being able to eat it at anytime)

Think about it: you’re rewarding your corgi following commands by using his FOOD rather than treats.

This is healthier for the dog, as treats are just treats. Kibble should be 90% of his food source. and you spend less cashon treats since one bag goes a long way.

This is why I always recommend feeding on a regular schedule over free feeding, especially when your corgi is just a puppy. It builds positive habits early.

How long can my corgi hold his poop?

If your corgi is still a puppy, there’s not much you can do to “extend” the amount of time he can hold it.

Waking up once or twice a night to let him go outside is a normal thing and part of puppyhood. They don’t call it puppy blues for nothing.

The rule of thumb is that they can only hold it for their age in months + 1.

• So a 3 month old corgi can hold it for 4 hours.
• And a 4 month old corgi can hold it for 5 hours.

Get it? Good.

As your corgi grows up to the rebellious teen phase, they’ll slowly be able to make it through the night without having to wake you up.

Your corgi should go as often as needed, on a healthy schedule.

This is why it’s important to always feed your dog on a routine schedule. This means the same amount of food, at the same time, every single day.

Corgis aren’t necessarily more expensive to breed compared to any other “cheaper” dog breed. It’s just that demand is high and supply isn’t keeping up.

Thus, breeders can charge more per dog because they know their corgi will sell no problem.

If you’re considering adopting or buying a corgi, it’s critical to note the overall average cost of owning one.

So let’s cover that.

How much do corgis usually cost?

The cost of the actual dog varies depending on the state where you live.

However, for an AKC registered puppy, you should expect to spend anywhere from $800-$2000 per pup.

This varies on the dog’s marking, show quality, age, championship pedigree, etc.

Monthly expenses

The overall expenses you’ll spend on average range from $100-300 per month depending on how much you want to spoil your corgi.

Just like ownership of any other living creature, you can scrape by with the bare necessities and generic, cheap brands.

Or you can go all out and spoil your dog with unnecessary purchases from luxury brands. The choice is yours.

Of course, practically and budget both come into play.

There are some basic things you’ll want to buy for your corgi that require a monthly expense:

• Medications (flea, tick, etc.)

Why do people tape corgi ears?

Some corgi owners tape their dog’s ears to help them grow in easier.

The ears are made of cartilage and it’s a “floppy” material by nature.

The tape acts like a “cast” to help support the ears develop as the puppy ages.

Taping the ears may help them stand up faster.

Do corgis ears stand up naturally?

Yes, the majority of corgis will have their ears stand up without any taping or change in diet.

However, some corgis will have slower growing ears that will take time to fully erect.

Other corgis may be early bloomers and have pointed ears even at 4 weeks!

Then there are corgis that are born without the gene expression for pointed ears.

This affects a very small percentage of corgis, but it’s still an occurrence.

Do all corgis have pointed ears?

According to the AKC’s breed description, both Pembroke and Cardigan corgis are supposed to have pointed ears.

Pembroke ears are fully pointed. Cardigan ears are floppy at the tip (drop years).

This is one of the differences between the Pembroke and Cardigan corgis.

Don’t be discouraged if your corgi puppy’s ears haven’t stood up yet- it can take time.

Whether or not you decide to tape your corgi’s ears shouldn’t be a difficult decision.

After all, it doesn’t hurt the dog to tape them and you’re just helping him out temporarily.

Do you have to tape corgi ears?

No, you don’t. Not every single corgi will require taping to get the ears to stand up.

The majority of corgis don’t need to be taped. And many owners didn’t even know ear taping is a thing!

But for the corgis that need a little bit of help, tape may come in handy.

Here are some questions to qualify whether or not you should tape your corgi’s ears:

• How old is the puppy?
• Do you notice the ears trying to stand up?
• Is one ear drooping? Or both?
• Do you notice the ear “trying” to perk up?

When do corgi ears stand up?

The timeframe for the ears to stand is around 4-24 weeks.

This means it can vary from the first month after being born to 4 months later.

There is a huge range, so don’t fret if your corgi is 8, 9, 10, or even 12 weeks old and the ears still aren’t pointed yet.

There are a few things that you can do to control the speed of how fast the ears stand. It’s mainly genetics, so you can ask your breeder for more specifics.

That’s when taping comes into play. You can tape your dog’s ears to help them stand up.

You can also supplement calcium in the diet to aid. This has been reported to help the ears stand up.

Should I tape my corgi’s ears?

There’s no harm in doing so and your corgi will probably brush off the tape anyway.

Taping is a gentle process that doesn’t hurt the dog. The only thing you need to watch out for is removing the tape!

Never pull it off like a bandaid because you’ll peel off corgi fur and hurt your dog.

Here are some questions to ask yourself:

• Is your corgi over 24 weeks and the ears are struggling?
• Can you see noticeable “pointing” in the ears?
• Are the ears pointed one day and revert back to floppy the next?

These are some handy tips that you should probably tape the ears. It’ll benefit the growth and get them to stand up nicely.

Does taping the ears hurt the dog?

There will be a little bit of pain.

Many people question whether or not taping the ears is cruel. But that’s subjective and brings up to question many different topics, like tail docking.

When the time comes to remove the tape, some corgi fur will be stuck to it.

You’ll want to be extremely careful during this part when you remove the tape to not hurt your dog.

Otherwise, the process is painless.

But your corgi may hate it regardless. If your corgi peels off the tape, you may have to reapply it again.

How to tape Pembroke corgi ears

Taping your Pembroke’s ears is simple and straightforward.

The whole point of the tape is that it’s rigid and offers a “cast” over the cartilage to help straighten it out.

There are two ways to do this.

The first is to tap each ear individually. This will allow you to still clean the head and pet between the ears without ruining the tape.

Dual tape method

Here’s how to do it:

1. Get a roll of masking tape. A thin roll works perfectly.
2. Hold your corgi still and take one ear.
3. Sit it upright so it’s pointed. It should “snap” into place when you hold it, though this depends on how old the puppy is and if the cartilage has grown in yet.
4. Fold the ear upwards exactly at the area where it bends and droops down. This is the area that needs support.
5. Cut a piece of tape (about 6 inches) and slowly wrap the tape around the part where it folds. Try to align the center of the tape to where the ear bends.
6. Don’t wrap the tape too tightly.
7. The ear should now be standing up on its own.
8. Repeat the process with the other ear.

Your corgi will probably hate it and try everything he can to get rid of it. If you taped it correctly, it shouldn’t come off.

However, if it does, you can try to re-tape it again.

Don’t force your dog to keep the tape on if he constantly tries to brush it off and doesn’t give up!

Single tape method

As for the other method, here it is:

1. Using a roll of thin masking tape, sit your corgi down.
2. Have someone help you hold both of the ears upwards at the bend.
3. Cut out a piece of tape about 12 inches in length.
4. Wrap the tape around both ears- aligning the center of the tape to where the ear bend is. Don’t wrap the tape too tightly.

Now both ears should be standing on their own and they should be taped together.

The drawback of this method is that you can’t pet the head and this is much more annoying for the dog.

Rather than only have the ears taped, the tape runs across the entire head.

Your corgi may really hate this method so you should switch to the other one if needed.

However, the second method seems to be stronger and hold up against corgi resistance.

How long do you tape corgi ears?

There is no set timeframe. Most ears should stand up on their own relatively quickly with tape.

You can reapply the tape every week and see how much progress has been made.

If you wanted an estimate, the entire process should take about 2-4 weeks.

Keep the ears stabilized upright and reapply the tape if it comes off.

My corgi removes the tape

Your puppy will try to do everything it can to remove the tape.

You can try to distract the puppy using treats, toys, or games to get it used to the tape.

This may take several hours until the dog gives up or forgets about it.

You’ll have to reapply it until it forgets it or gets used to the feeling of adhesives.

Taping the ears in the socialization period between weeks 8-12 is the best time as the puppy is more accepting of strange things on its head.

How to remove the tape from the ears

The easiest way to remove the masking tape is to use a blunt popsicle stick and separate the tape from the corgi fur.

Gently glide the stick between the tape and fur and it should separate.

Then use your fingers or a nail cutter to cut a slit in the tape. Peel it off carefully.

What tape should I use?

Use masking tape.

Avoid using packing or scotch tape.

Masking tape is the easiest to apply and remove from corgi fur. You can also supplement the tape with 2″ medical fabric tape or duct tape if needed.

Do this if the masking tape doesn’t stick to the ears or constantly loosen up.

Your dog will brush and paw at it, so you may need to use some additional support.

My corgi is over 24 weeks and the ears still haven’t stood up

So your corgi is over the ETA of when the ears should be standing.

At this point, you should check out the see if the ears are at least attempting to stand. If they are, you just may have a late bloomer.

If you notice no effort and they’re still floppy as ever, you may want to start taping or questioning if it’s really a purebred corgi.

A mixed dog may have genes from another breed and the trait may have been dominant.

Lastly, some corgis just don’t have pointed ears.

This affects a small percentage of corgis, but it’s natural.

Not every single corgi has pointed ears, even if the “breed standard” says so.

Some purebred corgis will have floppy ears for life and this is completely normal gene expression.

You should consider taking your corgi to the vet if you have questions.

My corgi’s ears are still floppy even with taping

How long has it been?

If it’s still within the age range of 4-24 weeks, that’s normal. Even a little after is okay.

The cartilage grows slowly and depends on diet, environment, genes, and more.

All you can do is wait, supplement calcium, and add tape for support.

Expect them to stand up, droop, and then stand up again. It’s not a linear path and they may be revert back to floppy at any point- especially when the puppy is still young.

Why do the ears stand up and then droop?

This is normal behavior. You shouldn’t expect to see the ears grow in linearly.

They’ll grow, drop, grow, drop, and repeat the process until they’re fully fleshed out.

Why does my dog only lift one ear?

That depends- are the ears fully grown in yet? If so, then it could just be a characteristic of your dog!

If you don’t suspect that anything else is wrong, this is completely normal similar to how humans just raise one eyebrow.

However, if your dog used to lift both ears or seems to have difficulties raising the other ear, take it to the vet.

My corgi has one floppy ear

Just like baby teeth, the ears may not grow proportionally at the same time.

Allow up to 24 weeks for them to grow and the droopy one to catch up.

You can supplement calcium or tape to support the one floppy ear.

My corgi has one ear bigger than the other

Just like having one floppy ear, the ears can grow at different rates.

Not to worry as the bigger ear will reach maturity and then the smaller ear will catch up.

My corgi is many months old and still has floppy ears

Remember that a small minority of corgis will never have pointed ears due to their gene expression.

If your corgi is 6, 8, or even 12 months old and you notice no growth in the eras and they’re just staying floppy, you could have a floppy-eared corgi!

Do corgis need baths?

Just like any other breed, your corgi needs baths.

Yeah, it can be a hassle.

Especially if your corgi hates getting wet or swimming.

But the good part is that they only need to be bathed once a month on average.

Or when they roll around in mud, dirt, or get covered in debris after a day out.

How often should I clean my corgi?

A rule-of-thumb:

• Spot clean your corgi as often as needed.
• Bathe your corgi no more than once a month.

A good rule of thumb is to give your corgi a bath just once a month unless he’s noticeably dirty.

The longer you keep him clean, the fewer baths he’ll need. You can go up to two months without a bath and he’ll be fine.

Don’t bathe your corgi too often

Bathing your corgi too often can lead to fur problems.

Depending on the shampoo you use, some may remove beneficial oil that coats their coat.

This can lead to more dirt getting stuck, matting, or skin problems, excess shedding.

The shampoo strips the natural oils found in the coat, which can dehydrate and dry out the skin.

Just bathe your dog using common sense and moderation and you’ll be fine. Once a month at most, unless noticeably dirty or smelly.

How do you bathe a corgi?

There is no special technique to bathe a dog, just like how there’s no “right way” to take a shower for yourself!

You can start by filling the tub up with warm water. Don’t worry about making it perfect as they have double coats to shield them from cold water.

Fill a tub with some warm water

Any lukewarm temperature is fine. Add the corgi to the bath slowly.

Soak your corgi

First, just rinse your dog. Get him soaked with water. If he shakes or tries to run away, keep him in place.

Depending on how he was socialized, bathing your corgi may be a difficult process.

You can use treats, positive encouragement, and a leash to stop him from running out of the bathtub, sink, or outdoors.

Apply shampoo and lather

After he’s soaked, squeeze out some shampoo directly into the water and in a line across his back.

Start a gentle lather to get the shampoo working on his coat.

Then start spot cleaning one body part at a time.

You can squeeze a bit of shampoo into your palm and work it into each primary area that often gets dirty:

• Belly
• Legs
• Neck
• Ears
• Feet
• Rear-end

Just use a bit of shampoo and lather in each area. You can use a cup to scoop up the water from the bath and apply it to each body part to keep him wet.

Rinse thoroughly

The shampoo you added to the water at the very beginning will kill a lot of the bacteria that’s rinsed off during the process.

This makes it safer to use the same water to rinse him.

After each section, rinse him with water. You can use the faucet, showerhead, garden hose, or whatever.

Rinse off the soap, one section at a time.

You can just leave the soap in each section and do a full rinse at the end so it has some time to work on the coat.

And then do a final rinse to get the rest of the soap out at the very end.

Dry off

Towel your dog in a burrito and dry him off.

Use a hairdryer to clean up the rest of the water and pair your efforts with eh towel for faster drying.

That’s it.

Shampoos for corgis

There are a ton of shampoos out there, and some are marketed specifically for corgis.

There’s no need to spend the extra cash on these products. You can use the most basic of shampoo to clean the coat.

You should actually want to use a gentle shampoo because a rough one will strip the oils from the coat and skin.

Use one that’s all-natural or organic.

Some have special additives to are advertised to help the coat or bring out the “shine.”

Do your research on these and see what’s in them.

Avoid anything you wouldn’t use on yourself. Simple is better.

Spot cleaning your corgi

You can also use different shampoos for different purposes.

• If you’re doing a full bathe, use one that’s made to remove dirt and healthy for the coat. Read reviews. Check the list of ingredients on the package.
• If you’re doing a spot clean, you can just use a basic shampoo that’s cheap and inexpensive.

Depending on your dog’s lifestyle, does he get dirty often? Constant baths will ruin the corgi’s coat and you should avoid that when possible.

You may want to resort to spot cleaning using a cheap shampoo so you don’t waste the expensive stuff.

For example, if you often hike with your dog and he comes with back covered in dirt on his paws, you should just spot clean the paws and that’s it.

On the other hand, if you just keep your corgi as a house dog, then it doesn’t need nearly as much cleaning as the outdoor corgi.

Avoid doing a full bath because this strips the natural beneficial oils.

It’s just like brushing your teeth. It’s good for you, but brushing too much will wear down your enamel.

The same goes for corgis. Avoid full baths when possible and limit them to once a month.

Spot clean the rest of the time with a cheap natural shampoo, such as some baby shampoos or oatmeal shampoos.

Oatmeal is also beneficial for their skin and usually natural, so it’s a popular choice in the corgi community.

Do corgis stink?

Corgis have an average “dog” smell and aren’t a smelly breed.

But if you don’t do proper grooming and bathing, your dog will smell.

This also depends on your dog’s lifestyle- does it stay outside most of the day? Do you take it on walks through the deep woods? Dirt? Mud? Water?

The grooming technique you use and how often you groom also affect the overall scent that comes from your corgi.

And lastly, the shampoo use makes a huge difference. Some shampoos have natural deodorizing compounds while others are just for cleaning.

When to start grooming a corgi puppy

You can start grooming your corgi weekly to get him used to it, especially when he’s a puppy.

When the dog is young, that’s when you need to get them used to have a tool going across their fur.

The coat also won’t be too thick, so it should be easy to get through.

There really is no “too early” to start grooming your puppy. Give him his first bath when he’s noticeably dirty or stinky.

Get him used to the process. If he doesn’t need a bath, then just start brushing him with whatever grooming tool you use.

Desensitizing him to the various grooming procedures and sounds will get him accustomed to it so he doesn’t have phobias which could cause disruptive behavior later.

Use treats and lots of praise to make the process enjoyable.

Socialization matters

If your corgi is still in the prime between weeks 8-12, this is a critical time to get your corgi used to all sights, sounds, and feelings of various grooming tools and bathing.

You want to expose your dog to everything you possibly can:

• Grooming tools
• Hairbrush
• Combs
• Toothbrushes
• Shampoo
• Bathtubs, sinks, and hoses
• Water
• Hairdryers
• Towels
• Nail clippers

Use lots of positive reinforcement, treats, and praise so they don’t take it as a negative experience.

This will help you later in life so your dog doesn’t freak out over everything and make grooming, bathing, and basic maintenance a chore for you.

Do corgis have an odor?

Just like any other dog breed, corgis can smell and emit an odor from their coat over time.

Some breeds are known to stink more than others, and corgis are about average in terms of odor.

Depending on many factors such as the environment, how often you exercise your corgi, bathing, and even the amount of sweat your corgi precipitates all affect the overall smell of your dog.

For example, if you exercise your corgi often and the dog park is messy and unkempt, all the dirt and debris collect into your corgi’s thick double coat, which will then start to smell over time. It may smell rotten, fishy, or just suddenly stink all of a sudden.

Sometimes, the scent can be stubborn to remove and your corgi will stink no matter what you do.

You’ll have to bathe your dog multiple times with powerful dog shampoo to get rid of the odor. Other times, you just have to let your corgi shed out the odor.

How often should I bathe my corgi?

Corgis have a dense double coat that repels a lot of dirt so they’re naturally very clean dogs. If you don’t want a smelly dog, a corgi is a decent choice.

They do have a baseline “dog” smell that’s neutral to the nose, but they can start to smell fishy or rotten if you neglect care.

You should bathe your corgi at least once per month or twice at most. Because their coat is thick and dense, a lot of dirt and debris simply fall off and never sticks to them.

Grooming keeps your corgi clean and odor-free

You can delay bathing by doing small cleanings of the paws, legs, and underside during regular grooming, which should be done at least once per day.

Frequent grooming during the shedding when they change coats (spring and fall) will help keep their coat nice and tidy.

If you keep your corgi well-groomed, you can get away with bathing it every 4-6 weeks to keep the hair clean. Bathing too much will dry or damage their hair and skin.

Spot wash dirty spots

Use spot-washes to clean areas that are prone to get dirty, especially after rain or a day out. The paws and undercarriage of your corgi get dirty fast.

The nails are also prone to dirt, so keep them clean and trimmed.

What shampoo should I use for my corgi?

There are countless dog shampoos on the market- some are marketed specifically for corgis.

Choose a high-quality, reputable dog shampoo backed by reviews with organic or natural shampoo compounds only. Look for something that doesn’t harm the coat or skin and has essential vitamins and nutrients made just for medium double coats. Or made just for corgis.

Because corgis are typically not a smelly breed, you can get away with generic dog shampoos.

How to get rid of stubborn corgi odor

Do you have a smelly corgi that just plain stinks? You can try doing a 100% deep bath to remove all the dirt. If your dog smells, there’s sweat, dirt, and debris trapped in the coat. This can happen because:

• The corgi isn’t being bathed enough
• Poor grooming habits
• Poor quality shampoo
• An active lifestyle (exercise)
• An extremely dirty environment

Any of these factors can contribute to a smelly dog.

Step 1: Start with doing baths that completely cover all parts of your dog. Focus on the paws, legs, underside, ears, and nails. All of these areas trap dirt over time and can stink up the place. Use a natural or organic dog shampoo with odor neutralizing properties.

Step 2: After weekly baths for one month, practice grooming at least twice a day to remove trapped dirt and loose fur. This will remove any fur that’s often lodged with debris which will help make your dog smell better. Don’t skip this step.

Step 3: Do spot cleans whenever you take your dog out for extreme exercise or into dirty environments. When you notice dirt on your corgi, clean it. Don’t let it sit on the coat or else it’ll smell or the fur can become matted.

Pembroke vs. Cardigan corgi odor

Both Pembroke and Cardigan corgis have the same double coat that’s constantly shedding throughout the year. This means that neither dog smells worse than the other.

They both smell the same equally and largely depends on how you care for their coat, bathing, and environment.

They shed twice per year during the seasons change as they blow off their old coat. The rest of the year, they shed to a lesser degree but it’s still enough for you to end up eating corgi fur for dinner.

Don’t underestimate how much hair is shed- it’s a lot. And you should be ready for it.

Are corgis high maintenance?

Corgis are a moderately difficult dog to care for. For first-time owners, corgis may prove to be a challenge because of their constant shedding, constant barking, and stubborn nature.

Bathing poses to be a small problem when you think of the overall picture of corgi care. Corgis only need one or two baths per month, even if you exercise the dog twice a day. Their coat is constantly shedding and repels a lot of dirt to keep them clean.

Corgis are clean dogs that aren’t known to constantly smell bad. However, just like any other dog, they can get smelly all of a sudden if you don’t do regular bathing and coat maintenance.

Even though corgis are extremely smart and can learn commands quickly, they may not always listen to their owners because they’re known to think for themselves.

They never expected it to be to a degree that they couldn’t handle. This breed is extremely popular right now, and many new owners are jumping into the craze without doing their due diligence!

And thus, the corgi needs to switch owners and go through a difficult change in its life. Don’t be that owner.
